    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Addison (George Sanders) confronts Eve (Anne Baxter) with the truth about herself.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the story The Wisdom of Eve by Mary Orr, All About Eve is an elegantly bitchy backstage story revolving around aspiring actress Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter). Tattered and forlorn, Eve shows up in the dressing room of Broadway mega-star Margo Channing (Bette Davis), weaving a melancholy life story to Margo and her friends. Taking pity on the girl, Margo takes Eve as her personal assistant. Before long, it becomes apparent that nave Eve is a Machiavellian conniver who cold-bloodedly uses Margo, her director Bill Sampson (Gary Merill), Lloyd's wife Karen (Celeste Holm), and waspish critic Addison De Witt (George Sanders) to rise to the top of the theatrical heap. Also appearing in All About Eve is Marilyn Monroe, introduced by Addison De Witt as "a graduate of the Copacabana school of dramatic art." This is but one of the hundreds of unforgettable lines penned by writer/director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, the most famous of which is Margo Channing's lip-sneering admonition, "Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy night." All About Eve received 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

"All About Eve" was my gateway into old black-and-white movies. Before it, I had never bothered. Then I was blown away, and I've been watching movie classics ever since. There are TONS like this from this period. Don't be put off by the black and white and the old directing and the hammy acting. There are gems like this with screenplays so sharp you can slice yourself on it. See also 39 Steps, M, Citizen Kane, Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, Brief Encounter, Third Man for more of this kind of thing. In fact the more I watch films the more I find this period to be a greater source of gold than most other periods. The consistency off good if not brilliant films in this era is remarkably high.

What would have made this scene perfect is if Addison would have pulled Eve towards him by the hair... but in 1950, that would have been a bit much for audiences.

Great scene. But here is something I'm wondering: Eve can be blackmailed by Addison because she doesn't want any of her sordid past to come to light. But when Eve accepts her award, she says she will soon be going to Hollywood to make a film. Wouldn't she be afraid of the fame that becoming a film star would bring? Then all these people from back home who know her sordid secrets would come out of the woodwork.

I suspect Addison may have enough connections and power to keep her name out of bad publicity, even for films. It would be yet another reason for her to play his game.
Not only would he have her for blackmail because he knows her past, maybe he could also have her because his power could also protect her from the truth coming out in the media and around town.
      Just a theory, anyway.
