- Paramount notified bidders late Wednesday night about its decision to conclude the BET Media Group sale process, said a person familiar with the decision who was not authorized to speak publicly. The person said the company determined maintaining a heavy stake in BET creates more value for Paramount than any of the proposals after consulting with financial advisers.

This was an amazing segment. I’m 35 years old and grew up on BET. By the time I was in college and graduate school I became enthralled with the black sector of reality television. I don’t watch nearly as much now and would actually prefer more of a balance. The anti intellectualism within our community and society as a whole is baffling. I just want BALANCE.

MR. Tyler Perry is a business man- I'm sure he'll make BET more entertaining and more profitable, that's why they don't wanna sell the entire company. They know that money is gonna come rolling in and they want to be able to run to the bank and deposit those HUGE Checks. I would pay them double just to be the sole owner. They know if you're willing to do that, you got a master plan and they want to be a part of that 🙂.

@@andrealawhorn2549 I download free apps for local news stations on my phone - with the smart technology provided on these devices, I can then cast it to my television- local public access television can be access through the internet, and many TVs that are sold today comes with some kind of television programming with options to download apps like Netflix, Prime, CZcams, Apple, Sports channels, etc., The options are endless. I find the programs to even be better than what cable provides, plus you're only paying for internet service. One last thing, when you purchase a television, look on the box to see which apps can be downloaded. Hope this helps!
I got rid of cable too in 2019 and I'm so glad I did!! The cable companies are nothing but theives.
I already had smart TV's but wasn't really using them the way they should've been.
I just learned from friends to get the highest speed of wifi that I could and then we all started sharing apps. I have some I pay for, Apple TV & Sling, but others I get from my friends. If I see that I'm not using an app, I just cancel or pause it so I'm not wasting my money. I'm saving about $230 a month by streaming vs how much my Comcast cable bill was!

Yep,100%. Only time I've watched cable in years (have people in the house that want it), was when I was in the hospital for 2 days last week. I've been getting Hella educated on black history over the past few months among my other VARIOUS interests. A lot of black centric News like Roland Martin, Dr Richey, and Phillip Scott, along with different viewpoints on different, mostly black, issues that are discussed by tik tokers that CZcamsrs grab together into compilations.

Cable made the huge mistake of not allowing people to choose their cable package with a basic channel package and a la carte channels. Also, the reruns and constant rate hikes and billing issues were just TOO MUCH of ridiculousness.
I cut the cord a very, VERY long time ago because of those things and have NEVER regretted it!!!💯

I haven’t had cable since 2013. I was going to get basic cable for my mom since she moved in with me. They want $60/mo for a bunch of shopping channels, B movie, old westerns, and church channels. I got her a fire stick instead now she has more channels than she can watch.

I was worried about buffering while streaming but w/the high speed wifi its not been an issue.
Our cable bill including internet with Xfinity was $153 in 2019... now? It's $268 minus $30 cuz we qualified for a program for poor people. We're in the middle of cutting the cord right now.

I remember 20 years ago the conversation in the cable industry was about how the landscape was moving toward a la carte. Customers no longer wanted to burdened with paying exorbitant fees for a bunch of channels they never watched. They wanted to pick and choose. Streaming allows customers to do just that. Bob knew to get out the game while the getting was good. He got his $3billion and Paramount ain't getting that amount for it now. LOL

I haven't watched BET since high school. It's been trash since the 2000s. Black movies and shows are always about the same old thing, no mystery, no thrillers, or horror, just crime, s**, and drama. I hate that it is that way. It's like we haven't learned to think or imagine anything outside our own experience.
Crime isn't "our" experience. It is however what media would have you believe. That image didn't come about until the 1970's as a way to dirty the black public image after the Civil rights victories. Before that the image was either a domestic servant or harmless waiter, field hand or doorman.

I’ve always wondered that myself…why we don’t do other genres of movies like horror or sci-fi. We just seem to do comedies and dramas. I know I ain’t the only black horror film junkie out here. Jordan Peele directed the movies Us and Nope, both of which I loved. We’re getting there but slowly. I look forward to the day a black film maker, using a black cast will make a film as creative and thought provoking as the movies Memento, Inception, The Machinist, Triangle or The Black Swan

I have to add that the CZcams app on my phone has been my primary source of digital media access for the last few months or so since my huge flat screen TV has been having technical difficulties. Even then, I was only accessing "over the air programming" like PBS shows & local news programming or wifi accessing material with my 'Frestick'.
I remember when you broke down all of what you are saying back when you decided to exit TV one! You said you weren't getting what you want at the level you wanted ❤ Class in session once again ❤ You didn't like being restricted ❤And you envisioned your own program to widen and benefit black people ❤ Opened my eyes to the black experience in being on television 📺

Another issue is that we need to stop trying to hurt those in a crab in a barrow way, who are in the position, and the process of making it happen. I was involved in a launch of several networks and a platform like Netflix before Netflix was thought of. And a person who you named that I wont name made threats to me personally and sent a team of people BLACK PEOPLE to set us up in a major way to hurt us and put a hit on our lives. Judge said they came at us from all angles. We as Black people need to stop hurting those Black people who are trying to pull us up. I will leave there.

A lot of people, including myself, thought Bob Johnson either sold out, or was forced to sell out when he sold BET to Viacom. It looks like it worked out for him business wise.

If only our people would emphasize & encourage READING--like they do watching TV!....WOW--READING IS FUNDAMENTAL! It broadens your horizons/keeps your mind alert/helps w/spelling & it is “food” for the mind!!!!!!! At some schools-the reading levels - does not even move the graph-that’s how bad the reading scores are among a lot of our kids. Make sure they can read -before you spend all that $$$ on those fancy proms!!!! Just saying!

25:00 re: BET, I think it's different when a black owned MEDIA company is sold to white people because of the fight we have experienced all along of being positively portrayed in the media. One of the first things that happened when BET stopped being black owned was that they cancelled all the news shows. And the new programming I come across on there (not counting reruns of sitcoms) doesn't necessarily have positive black characters, and that includes the Tyler Perry dramas.

I would love to have cable in my home but the cost of cable is out of this world. I want cable and would rather watch television on my television using my remote and just chilling. Problem is, I need internet to work and communicate. If cable networks would lower their prices, they would see the revenue come back but seriously. GREED has taken over this country. It really sucks.
