  • In this video, I will show you how I have setup my Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform and Backbone on my Land Cruiser Prado for touring (overlanding). I will show you all of the accessories I have added to it and how it helps me camp. I will discuss my experiences with it for the last 10,000 km's and whether or not it is worth the money.

The problem with the platform was with vehicles requiring rack mounts to be pop riveted onto the roof with no structural considerations, this resulted in the pop rivets shearing of or pulling out of the roof. Also the fact that rhino were misleading in providing static and moving weight ratings and making it so hard to find that information on the website. That has changed now as they provide a calculator which is still not the best.
Using the back bone system like many other brands is the way to go, but as everyone know it death by public opinion and they haven’t done themselves any favours either.
Often over looked system is the rola titan system. Keep up the good work

Ah! That makes sense. I looked at the Rola system and it looked very good for the money but I couldn’t find a platform size that suited my vehicle in the shops. I also couldn’t find much information about how to actually attach the rola system to my sport rails which made me lean toward the rhino rack. Thanks for commenting 👍

Amazing video! May I know the size of this rack? 1900mm or 2100mm? Thanks!

Great looking set up on the rack. Have you done a video on how and where you got power to your rack for your lights.

Hey mate. Thanks for the comment. I did an electrical walkthrough video. Have a look through my videos for it 👍

Can I ask, how much higher is the car with the roof platform on now? I've got a short garage opening at home. Thanks

I don’t have exact measurements but I can tell you that with the max tracks on, it scrapes the 1.9m bars at drive throughs

I have the Rhino system you do on my Pajero and find it quite noisy.
Did you find a fair bit of wind noise whilst driving even before you added the accessories on your Prado?
Did the lightbar add or reduce any wind noise?
Also, does that lightbar spill over your white bonnet and cause it to reflect in a negative way?
Cheers for any answers you can share.

Hi mate. No difference in wind noise with the rack on in the Prado. Light bar made no difference to noise either. The light bar didn’t light up the bonnet as it pointed it away from the bonnet 👍

did the backbone come with your platform or was that a separate purchase?, do you have any links?

    • @NorthOz
      @NorthOz  Před 2 lety

I purchased them separately. The platform is universal but the backbone is vehicle specific. I will see if I can get a link but I just went in and bought it from the store 👍

Went with Rhino early on. Was sort of worried when Tyler Thompson lost his rack, but once I realised his was rivetted onto his roof, I knew I would be ok with the bolts in my roof. I think that you could really overload a Rhino and have zero issues, however, legalities always come into play if you were to have any sort of accident or try to make a claim etc. Rhino are good, be aware of legal stuff and you will be fine!

His video did scare me (and everyone) but after abusing this rack with a bit of weight on it, I am confident that this is a well made product. I don’t know who though rivets were a good idea for that rack but I would be watching the loaded weight carefully if I ran that setup for sure. Maxtrax and a solar panel would be about all I would put on it haha
