      +muddnyreye Just getting out and doing it is the most important thing, doesn't matter what gear we have so long as it works and keeps us safe. Being cocooned in a tent is alien to me and prefer a simple tarp and bivy setup, its more open to the elements but you feel more connected and closer to nature. Everyone should try a bivy camp once in their live's, you may love or hate the experience but if like me you love it will change your outlook on camping forever

      +Fell Wanderer U.S. military ponchos are designed to snap together to form a tent. I used a pair of ponchos as my only shelter for many years. Did all sorts of things in the summer, and then ran trap lines until mid-winter, all with those two ponchos. I'm old school all the way, though I'm too old to carry a ten pound canvas tarp for the tenderfeet I had to guide like I often had to when I was young.

    Love your cheerie disposition! There are too many miserable sods in the world!
    For a chopping board, you could try cutting an empty plastic milk bottle, cut to shape of one side. You can choose to leave the handle on or off for gripping, and you can use a 4 pint, or a 6 pint depending on your size needs, and they can be flexible enough to roll round a thermos or a water bottle in your bag etc.

    I have a Polish Lavuu also and I love it - 2 tips for you - try turning it inside out as I think you had it the wrong way around and also try tying a rope to the top and hang it rom a tree limb, that way you can remove the pole and it will give you more room.

      +Cornish Knives & Camping Having it the way you mentioned would make the poncho sleeve holes more waterproof to water ingress as the button flap is on the outside but you wont be able to open from the inside, from what I've read there is mixed comments on which way is best to have the lavvu setup. I'm coming to the conclusion both methods have their benefits so will try both ways in the rain and see what happens.Damian

    Cracking night out. The first time I made a nice slap up meal at camp, I wasnt sure all the effort would be worth it, til I ate some. Quite happily chuck a joint of meat in the fire now and faff about as its totally worth it in the end. The Lavvu's are a decent piece of kit. I've slept in half of one with a bug net draped over. Woulda been nice with a fire just at the door but was sweet as is. Good to see you back out and about. ATB, Mike

      +Fergs uK Being canvas, the heat retention would be better than with a thinner tent material and less likes to burn from stray sparks off a fire too. At one point I was thinking it would have been easier just heating up meatballs and mash until I tasted the stew and knew it was worth it. Its good to practice different ways of cooking and I might try cooking a steak onto a bed of hot coals without any tinfoil as its something our ancestors would have done.

    I can definitely relate to the thrifty nature of your wild camping.30 year ago I was in the army cadets and we were wild camping in Penshaw woods using army ponchos, I was told to buy paracord to use as ties for the shelter.This was £4-£5 in the army navy store and well beyond what I could afford at 13 and much more than I could ask my single parent mum for.My only option was to improvise.I searched my home and scavenged shoe laces,and a ball of wool, I was quite proud of my resourcefulness. The wild camp was pulled late night because some cadets were shiting themselves because of the dark etc and we went back to base.I will always remeber the leader berating the squad and mentioning that someone had used fucking wool for ties on the camp.I have felt embarrassed and have only recently realised that in a real situation that my resuorcefullness and ingenuety is of more value than having the ability to purchase a product. Love the talking shite keep up the good work.

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  Před 8 lety

      +baggies5000 That was a lovely story, something I can totally relate to. In the cadets we used small 2 man canvas shelters, can't remember what they were but they didn't have a ground sheet and the sleeping bags were old green smelly down filled bags which were prickly as hell. We had mess tins and hex stoves for cooking, nothing high tech but loved it. We went camping along the You couldn't show any softness as you would get stick off the other lads but your resourcefulness should have been recognised as you thought out of the box and improvised. I remember going camping up Alwinton and we hid our beer in the stream to keep cool and I thought the group leader had seen me, he asked if I had any beer so I said no thinking I'd get into trouble and he pulled out a 2L bottle of cider and gave me it, happy days I'll remember for the rest of my life. ATB, Damian

    Stealth means so much more than you seem to realize. Stealth is not just spending the night in the woods, it means unseen, unheard, unsmelled. It is the avoidance of detection. It means natural shapes and colors. It means no fire, no cooking, no lights, it means leave no trace of having been there. Select bushy areas, not close to trails, roads or water. A camouflaged tent is just an unnatural pointy shaped thing. Clearing away the natural ground cover eliminates “leave no trace” Cooking, smoking can be smelled. A fire is a beacon in the night. Enjoy your camping, but it’s definitely not stealth.

    One safe way to cut or weld gas cylinders is to fill them with water first (obviously after making a hole in them). For the chimney you might find a piece of stainless flexible gas flue in a skip if you can find some small enough.

    If you want a good saw blade the Bahco blades are excellent! A bit expensive but they work awesome!

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  Před 7 lety +1

      Bahco saws are well respected so agree with what you are saying. I've bought cheap blades in the past costing only £1 thinking I'll save money, they only stay sharp for one trip so I came to the conclusion that the old saying of buy crap pay twice is true. Swedish steel is renounded to be of high quality, just like their axe manufacturer's so I would choose them

    nice camp Damian!....like the old US army pup tent, the lavvu looks a bit dark and possibly depressing over time...still its a smashing bit of kit as you say, especially for the price.

      +Declan Morland Mine is still waterproof even after 30 years of being in storage. Fabsil gold seems to be the best and will let the lavvu get wet a few times to season before treating the fabric. Thanks for watching.

    Damian, do you use that site regularly?? That big dead tree needs taking down. Would create a lovely stump for splitting wood, chopping veg for stew, etc. The tree can provide a couple of nice benches too plus plenty of firewood. Make the place nice. Looks like a nice place to set up for repeat visits. The bucksaw looks great and should be excellent once you get a good blade for it.

      +Biting Mongeese - Geoffrey Bynoe I try not to leave too much trace of my presence but some trees do look dead and dangerous so if I have no other choice and have to camp under one I will take it down for safety reason. Thanks for watching..
