    This is, by far, the best video explaining monster AI on this website. Thank you so so much for making this video! I started playing yesterday (tabletop) and we were lost when it came to the monster movement, even though I had read the rule book twice.

    Thank you for all of your amazing videos on Gloomhaven. I have just started playing and completed the 1st 2 scenarios with my son. It was great to watch through your content and find the areas where we have been making mistakes with the rules. I'm sure we will make more, but this will help with our enjoyment.
    I just need to find a place in the UK that sells those storage boxes at a reasonable price. All together it is the same cost as a custom inset.
    Keep up the great content.

    If an acrcher has traps behind it as is adjacent to it's focus, will it still move back in to a trap to avoid disadvantage? And what if a monster has a choice of moving longer and avoid traps to attack a target or a shorter path to attack it's focus but through a trap?

    Nice videos. One question: If it is the hero's turn because he has a lower initiative, but the monster's card shows "Shield X" or "Retaliate X" , do I have to apply it? Or it doesn't have to be applied since the monster's turn hasn't come yet (higher initiative)?

    14:59 if say a bandit was blocked from moving for some reason by allied monsters instead of the spike-traps next to the door, and the shortest way to a player was to go through the thorn-traps, would the monster skip its movement that turn or would he choose to go through the traps? Thanks for this awesome tutorial

    The example at 14:15 , If the monster only had a movement of 3, would it then cross the hazard to find focus or still go around even though it won't get an attack.

    • @albin7475

    @ramonsarrate9146 Před rokem

    15:55 You mention that the first tie breaker is proximity. Is this proximity measured from the current monster hex or from the hex within range and LoS? Since you next say that the distance is two, I guess the second option is the correct, right?
    However, later on the quizzes, you count them from their current location. So, was the proximity in the former example 3, instead?

  • @timroelandt5546
    @timroelandt5546 Před 3 lety +2

    So the distance between characters is measured in empty spaces and not with a ruler from center to center?

    • @ModernTablegamer
      @ModernTablegamer  Před 3 lety

      Yep, just count hexes and leave the ruler behind. You may need one of those nice lasers to make it easier to find line of sight though.

    • @mrburger
      @mrburger Před 2 lety

      @@ModernTablegamer But okay, wait a minute. At 6:12 you say that to determine the monster's focus you are going to count hexes and compare movement. Then, when it turns out to be a tie, you say that for the tiebreaker you are going to ... count hexes and compare movement?

  • @johndaily543
    @johndaily543 Před 3 lety

    Question @25:20- does the number of characters mean the number of adventures still alive at the time the boss is activated, or the number of adventurers in the party, or the number of characters (monsters and adventures) on the board? Thank you so much for these videos! This is hands down the best series I've seen on this game. Cheers!

    • @JammanPwns
      @JammanPwns Před rokem +1

      I am pretty sure it is the number of party members that started the scenario. Irregardless if the party member was exhausted before triggering the boss. But it does not include monsters. (Unless there is a rule that says otherwise)

    12:00 what about if it' s the archer turn and he draws a just movement card (withouth attack options) and he is already in range for attacking? does he still moove like a melee towards the focus or stay and loose the turn waiting for an attack card?

  • @brandonhorn2007

  • @kennymcintyre4791
    @kennymcintyre4791 Před 2 lety

    I know I'm late on this but still learning the game but at 15:40 for your example correct me if im wrong but if your action card has a range but the enemy has a - for range mean he's not able to do range attack.

    • @kennymcintyre4791
      @kennymcintyre4791 Před 2 lety +1

      Your quiz 2 also does same thing, i'm pretty thats wrong. Page 9 of rule book mention A "-" as the range value signifies the monster's normal attack action can only target adjacent hexes. He only has a sword equip. Those action card are use for both bandit guard and archer, the range should be ignore for bandit.

    • @IRatchetI
      @IRatchetI Před 2 lety +1

      @@kennymcintyre4791 Yes those Bandit Guards normally don't have a ranged attack. But if you look at the ability card he flips over for them, they gain a ranged attack with a range of 2 at the cost of having a -1 to movement.

  • @williamskogen9895

    I believe your ranged example starting at 16:40 is incorrect. A monster will focus on the enemy it can make it's current attack against using the least amount of movement. In a melee attack that would be the closest enemy. In this ranged example, the Spellweaver is in range with the monster not having to use any movement at all, therefore the Spellweaver would be the focus.....or so I thought until I found the ruling from Isaac Childress - :The archer judges who can be brought into range with the fewest movements, but if multiple enemies are already within range, it still judges closeness based on proximity before going to a tie-breaker,
