    South Africa is very progressive laws and constitution wise but the actual people are still very conservative and I think access to better education and exposure is what’s missing- even in affluent areas.
    I live in the suburbs and the people around me aren’t that intolerant, so I’m not really in the closet but my safety and peace of mind comes first. I avoid potentially putting myself at risk.

    All of this is pretty interesting linguistically speaking. As a translator I face lots of difficulties when trying to translate the "new" or better said, updated terminology regarding gender issues and LGBTQ+ issues. Just the pronouns thing is a whole mess since in my language and many others there are no neutral pronouns, they're all gendered.😅

    • @fighterflight
      @fighterflight Před 2 lety +5

      Yes especially in Spanish for example you can’t even use a plural pronoun because those are also gendered.

    • @matj12
      @matj12 Před 2 lety +1

      @@fighterflight I don't know Spanish well, but I know it somehow; there are a masculine word “humano” and a feminine word “persona”; both of them can be used to refer to humans regardless of their gender. So it could be said both “El humano es alto. Él es de 2 metros.” and “La persona es alta. Ella es de 2 metros.”, and similarly in plural, about anybody of any gender because the pronouns would refer to them as the the “humano” or “persona”. Is that right? I use things like this while speaking Czech, and I think that it's correct there.

  • @ParadoxHorde
    @ParadoxHorde Před 2 lety +62

    Thanks so much for this video! Seeing the parallels between the ongoing Canadian apartheid system against Indigenous communities and South Africa makes it very apparent to me that gender expansive people across the world are struggling against these systems. The system here still maintains binary gender, it has an option for an 'X' on people's documents, but they are still forcibly gendered as either male or female. And the 'X' can be a target on some of them, as having that 'X' singles them out as gender expansive.

    • @RoyalReyna
      @RoyalReyna Před 2 lety +3

      Not to be insensitive, but "male" and "female" aren't genders, they're sexes, which aren't the same. There are only 2 sexes, male or female, so I don't understand why this is an issue.

    • @ParadoxHorde
      @ParadoxHorde Před 2 lety +9

      @@RoyalReyna the issue with putting people in one of only two available sex category options affects trans, nonbinary, and intersex folks at large. When people have mixed sexual characteristics, that complexity gets erased, and medical systems are not able to care for this complexity, as one example. Sex is complicated, because you are trying to put more than 32 human characteristics into one of only two categories. And sex as a system in North America is a part of how expansive genders are forcibly erased- trans people ourselves do not neatly fit into the strict categories of male and female as they exist today. If we are willing to expand our conception of how we see gender, I think it's only fair to expand how we understand sex, because it is also more complex than we've been told it actually is.

    • @RoyalReyna
      @RoyalReyna Před 2 lety +1

      @@ParadoxHorde I just don't think it's really that complicated. You can be whatever gender you want, that's your identity and expression, but with sex you have to chose. If you are a female and intend to remain such or intend to transition then you'd select female. If you are a male and intend to remain such or intend to transition to male then you'd select male. While I sympathize with intersex people, they aren't a large group. To me, it's like picking which vitamins you take: there's only two and I don't think that's exclusionary, everyone picks and your pick is your business. If you want to transition that's fine, but we all pick. It has nothing to do with your gender or personal identity. I just don't think it's a big deal

    • @ParadoxHorde
      @ParadoxHorde Před 2 lety +8

      @@RoyalReyna that may be easier for you to say if the model of sex as a binary already fits you. But being asked to pick one of two options that doesn't actually make sense for people with mixed sex characteristics is a logistical and social challenge. If you both sets of sex organs, your life in a strict this/that world gets a lot more complicated. If you're willing to lend that it's plausible to change and accommodate trans people, I think you can also lend that same empathy to sexual diversity.

    • @RoyalReyna
      @RoyalReyna Před 2 lety +1

      @@ParadoxHorde As far as I understand, most intersex people have their sex chosen by their parents shortly after birth, and only possess one set of functioning reproductive organs despite having both sets of genitalia, so to me it seems that the choice has already been made for them, so I still don't get why it's a problem. The whole "binary" system to me perpetuates gender stereotypes by promoting the idea that being "binary"--the gender that matches with your sex--is the standard or is normal while everyone else is "nonbinary" or abnormal. I disagree with this. If sex and gender are different, then we have to stop linking them together and making assumptions about one based on the other. Gender is a construct, one that we can work to either eliminate or expand, allowing people to be who they are and who they want to be without the constraints of these rigid gender roles. Sex is not a construct, it is a biological fact. You can change it if you want, it's not as rigid as some would like to make it seem, but it's not that complicated. We can add a box for intersex people (although intersex would technically be both sexes.not a different 3rd sex) but I don't see any alternative to this.

    Is there any other ASMRtist that uses this medium to educate, and thus to improve us as individuals? Because I do not know of any. This woman is very unique and valuable to us. Her intelligence is fierce, with which she cradles us to sleep. I'm in awe! If I was god, I'd have her have 2 million subscribers

    I would love my rude, Hispanic-hating, judgmental, super-critical, uber-conservative South African boss to watch this.
    Edit: so glad to see the braids again! Your braids are always so beautiful, seeing you with long, straight, blonde hair was really odd

    Yes I love these types of videos, and honestly it is still very ASMR because of your lovely voice! For a wisdom Wednesday I would love to hear about healthcare in South Africa. Here in the US it is a big topic always and especially now, as healthcare workers are struggling, there are shortages of supplies and blood, and costs are very high. What is the situation in South Africa? Have you had good experiences?
