A year after its launch, the Tata Harrier is back with a more powerful diesel engine, more equipment and an automatic gearbox. Co-incidentally, the Jeep Compass got a few updates of its own recently too, including a diesel auto powertrain and more equipment. Which one is best? Renuka Kirpalani picks a winner.

Harrier is no where a match to the compass .... Compass is the better built , quality interiors , proper SUV with 4×4 options , better handling and drivability ...... So better don't go with the size ..... Only enthusiasts prefer to buy the cars in this segment and harrier won't appeal to enthusiasts as much as the jeep compass do .... And not to say about that jeep badge 💞 which deserves the money

Jeep is over hyped here.. It is considered one of the most unreliable brand in US.
Compass is a great car, no doubt. But it has its issues
The 9 speed auto is nowhere near as enthusiastic as the hyundai 6 speed in the Harrier
The compass isn't as spacious
It isn't VFM anymore, limited plus is almost 30 lacs in some cities, and I'm sorry but a compact SUV like that is not worth 3 million rs, I'd rather shell out some more and get a proper SUV like the fortuner
Ofcourse it has its merits as well, compass is the better handler of the two
The 2.0 Multijet is the best in the compass compared to any other versions

I once drove harrier 12hrs straight with only 1 hr break and when i reached my destination i wasn't tired.. the thing i liked in the harrier is it kept reminding me to take a break
I was gonna write the same thing 16 hours straight and was not tired at all
Yup...the video seems to be a bit biased as Harrier has the best backseat and comfort in its segment...

How does the car exactly remind one to take a break ? I bought the car and would like to know about this feature (haven't driven for long distance yet)
For those who don't know, the ground clearance shown in this video is laden. The ground clearance (unladen) of the Harrier is 205mm
No doubt compass is a good car but when it comes to comparing with harrier,it is the harrier which is a clear winner because of its looks,road presence, space,solid built quality n value for money.
Of course it gives the same power as that of compass with a lower price when compare to compass
With a crappy build and inferior infotainment? Yea right!!
Just by adding memory seat , wireless charging, a bit larger and responsive touch screen, internet connectivity and air purifier . It will become far more superior than compass. Same needed in nexon variant. Now consumer can pay a good price for tata cars. Thats a belief reflects in sales figure.
Had taken a test drive of the BS6 Harrier AT recently, absolutely loved it, I have a problem with 2 things first the touch screen and the reverse camera is a disgrace at this price point, secondly tata motors should focus on improving there electronics inside led reading lamp switch wasn't working, lastly the steering is not bad but yes it follows the road and it will tire you more than the compass.
It's called better feedback and stability, its hydraulic steering after all
@@nishchaynandre5540 Being a front wheel drive it felt a little weird when you put the power down, everytime had to hold the steering tightly. This is not the case in rear wheel drive vehicle's.
I was waiting for this review with burning curiosity thank god i made right decision and bought Harrier.

Abraham Ering no it isn’t and the two can’t be compared, Harrier is based on Land Rover Discovery which is miles ahead of Scorpio, the Suspension in harrier is well balanced.
@Abraham Ering don't compare apples with oranges.... How can the body roll of a Monocoque (Harrier) be compared to a Ladder on Frame Chassis (Scorpio)?.... Ofcourse Harrier is way superior to Scorpio in terms of body roll.....
tata's intention is not to make money, but to offer great build quality in a less price than the other brands as Tata always concern about safety 😍

Nexon top model cost 15 lakh while mahindra xuv 300 top cost 13 lakh. Harrier is priced same as compass. Not even single car of tata is priced below its competitors

Harriet clear winner on price , size , looks , better gearbox performance , that woooden cabin looks more plush , Harrier’s 2wd works as well as compass’s 4wd , very spacious and comfortable and well ofcourse omega arc Land Rover platform is a boast
Honestly i'd go for the jeep cause i have test driven both cars and the jeep just feels so much better to drive. Bear in mind that there are people who buy cars for the basic fun of driving and the compass does fulfill that desire. Some models of the compass are slightly cheaper. The harrier is good but just too all over the place kinda car for me. In the end, i believe the extra 3-4 lakhs is worth it.
I cant buy even a santro and here i am watching harrier. Man tata uped their game alot. Recently ive been to tata showroom and saw harrier. It is a beast! Even better than fortuner which is a big deal for a SUV.

They said it's only due to price. Otherwise, compass is the clear winner. It's got the best ride quality and that is the major deciding aspect of any car for those who love to drive.
Compass looks better, handles better, has 4x4, better infotainment, better attention to detail with those red stitching on seats, better steering. Not right to say "clear winner". Compass is better for classier and self driving owners who don't mind spending the extra bucks. Harrier is better for chauffeur driven and gives much more value for money
I was waiting for this comparo after the launch of the BS6 Harrier & was also expecting for other rivals to jump into the fray & spice up things, but, as always, Renuka Ma'am covered it up in a way no one can & came up with such an intriguing review...!👏👏👏 Tata has really come a long way & the Harrier is a testament that our perception towards the company needs to change. Its such a balanced product which has something to offer to every consumer. Comments might pour in to highlight the missing connected car tech & other useless features, but this car is all about enjoying the feel behind the wheel, the driving experience & that is something which will keep one more entertained than the long list of tech wizardry found in some other competitors. Great job Tata motors for bringing in such a great product & Autocar India for always exceeding our expectations.....!😊🎊🎉
I can compromise tonnes of features for the looks and road presence of harrier❤❤ and when u get know the automatic is one segment above as well as the platform then i don't think any guy would need something else
If I am allowed to choose then it's definitely Harrier.. not only because of price tag but also did the fact that it's our home grown Tata which is now giving serious competitions to foreign manufacturers..
Harrier using jeep engine only and we must be proud that our indian company has much better car equal to an american product, support our Indian car's...

1:11 are you sure those ground clearance figures are correct? They seem even less than a sedan like Honda City.
New government regulation requires manufacturers to declare ground clearance when the car is laden, not unladen. Hence the lower numbers. :)

2 years ago Compass was a value proposition. It made a segment of its own but now... it is the most expensive with trailhawk models touching nearly Rs.30lakh in some states. Not worth buying right now. Jeep needs to reconsider its pricing and maybe bring in a facelift soon after Coronavirus pandemic ends.
Trailhawk us comes around 35 lacs ...compass is nearly 29 lacs...
The 2020 harrier automatic actually makes sense to buy in the price range it is offered.

Thanks for comparing Harrier with Jeep. This is the first time Harrier get a respect by comparing same segment SUV technically not price point of view. All other CZcams channel comparing with Hyundai Creta and kia Seltos unnecessary. I wish you will compare it with more SUV like Hyundai Tucson and many more.

Will post judgement after test driving both. Meanwhile, 1>Technically : It's Jeep, On 2>Commercial aspects : Harrier, 3>living with : Jeep. Brand Appeal and Resale value ; Jeep . But buy a slightly toned down option of Jeep and live happily. Jeep could have bridges the gap by offering 6 speed auto I think that would have sealed the deal. Any takers huh?

I drove the Harrier AT after seeing this video. Unfortunately, the transmission isn’t as good as I’d hoped it would be, and the Diesel engine makes way too much noise in the cabin. There is no place to rest your other hand if you’re cruising with one hand. The power of the harrier is good on paper but it let down by the transmission.
I love the positive steps Tata is taking, if they improve some of the finer details, the car would be much more attractive.
Jeep Compass for me any given time if the price was not considered.But the extra price we pay is for the sheer engineering,and technology in it..It is not like Harrier with Land Rover platform,FIAT engine,Hyundai Gearbox.

Jeep compass is the best ........ superb driving dynamics ......... even though compass is heavier and they share same engine technology , compass just blows out the harrier with performance , segment first suspension - fsd , jeep active 4*4 , and premium built quality justify the price ........ jeep compass can simply blows out fortuner and endeavour in performance .... jeep stability even above 200 + is remarkable ........

I didnt understand why tata omitted an awd variant for this wonderful vehicle with a landrover platform! Tata's r&d surely needs some young auto enthusiast.if they had given an awd variant then people would have stopped comparing it with creta and all! Personally i also wished a revision for that headlight in bs6 version, it feels like an afterthought! Anyways both are good.
Buying TATA car is helping the nation grow. Huge respect to TATA group for standing with India and remember TATA built India. Surprisingly they donate much of the wealth to welfare of People. Buyers can compromise some of flimsy features to by a quality Indian product.

What's the actual difference between Harrier's rear suspension & Compass's rear suspension? How superior is the the multi-link over the Harrier's semi-independent set-up? Is it better than the normal torsion beam set-up? Autocar if you can clarify?

Whoever is preferring Harrier over Compass here is forgetting that the Compass is a 4x4 drive and that's why the hefty price. Take them both on a snow mountain and you ll see how Good a compass is as a car.

Tata Harrier maintenance is cheeper then Jeep compass. And resale value is also better Jeep compass. So I would prefer Tata harrier mostly
