The Bee Gees should be mentioned far more often when the greatest groups of all time are discussed. They filled the 60s with their uniquely beautiful, ethereal music and then, just when it looked like their fame was waning, they reinvented themselves to come back as the masters of the disco era. Truly brilliant and sadly missed.

Dad used to cart mum and I off to, when I was a baby, race car meetings where the Bee Gees played often here in Aus back in the 60s. A pity they never seemed to remember their beginnings in any interviews I've seen of them. It makes me feel as if they spat on the country that welcomed them in, gave them their start, as children. Back to their parents' home country, with never a thank you.

Simply amazing, in 1969 my mother was distributively honking her horn to pick me up from my first dance (Now keep in mind back in those days that a Dodge Desoto horn easily drowned out the music on a Junior High School dance room floor. The girl was so pretty and sincere that I asked for her phone number in hopes I could call her and we would meet again, well the horn continued to blare and I had to leave while only hearing the first 3 numbers or assuredly walk the 7 miles home on a cold blustery night in the step hills of northeastern NJ. Well, long story short "I've Gotta Get a Message To You was playing as our last dance closed. I left without her complete phone number. Yet somehow this song continued to play in my head all night s I attempted to sleep and I finally did fall asleep for an hour or so in the early morning. I awoke the next morning with a number in my mind. I rapidly dialed it and guess what, now that beautiful, understanding and amazingly wonderful girl that I met on the dance floor is still my wife after almost 50 wonderful years. I'll never forget the Bee Gees and their great hits.

Andy would have added nothing to the Bee Gees but the difficulty of an additional member who would have expected a share of lead vocals. By the time his brothers considered having him join them, absolutely no one else in the industry would touch him with a ten foot pole because he was a thoroughly unreliable screw up. I can only imagine they considered it out of pity and a hope he might straighten himself out if they had him under constant supervision. I don't think it would have turned out well. At the time of his death he was ostensibly in England to work on new material with Robin but he never entered Robin's studio and instead spent his time getting drunk, complaining there was nothing to do and pilfering from local merchants to the extent Robin had to keep going in to town to settle accounts with them.

I'll never forget how great they were in 1968, now, 51 years later I still love their style and all their songs, Andy, Maurice, and Robin are all sadly missed. RIP Andy, Mo', and Robin. Barry, stay strong, Brother, you're just as good now as way back then.

Unfortunately for us in 2024, Barry probably won’t be performing anymore. He says he can hardly hear anymore without the use of hearing aids. All the years of gruelling touring ruined his hearing, and well as led to all-over body arthritis. Still, Barry’s normal voice is still signature Barry.

It's hard to believe that Maurice and Robin were only 18 when this was filmed. Maurice's bass-playing is incredible. All three were self-taught, no vocal or instrumental training. They didn't know how to read or write music, except in their heads and through collaboration. They were simply born to do this. I am in awe.
