    i was 7 years in china and i left, and the ending really got me, ' im too foreign to fit in here, and iv been away so long im too foreign to fit in at home'.
    The worst thing is if you say that to someone in your home country they think you are being pretentious or actively TRYING to seperate your self from them, but its a real feeling.

      Give it some time and get to know other people, especially the ones you respect, that have lived in different cultures. You'll find that you actually belong or "fit in" more cultures than people in China or at home. You only have a short amount of time in this world. It is a gift to have a connection with a much larger portion of the humanity.

    I have been in and out of China since 2004. I moved to China as a long term resident in 2013. I have watched China grow and change. I have changed with it. I have seen so much, and I know my time is nearing its end. I have so many stories and experiences. This country is not recognizable, and now I am so different. I am sad to let go, but I got to move on. This video hit so hard.

    Now Mamahuhu is over, I hope it's not too late to make a comment on your terrific works. As a Chinese based in Shanghai and Europe, Mamahuhu is my only favoured CZcams Channel among the ones that tell China stories while underlining their expats background. You guys are smart storytellers and romanticist. While apparently all the other China-based Channels by the non-Chineses(that I encountered) are either travel vlogs or politic talk shows, giving explicit opinions in a dualistic mindset, Mamahuhu, just like its name马马虎虎, blurs boundary of categories and complicates the commonplace of west and east, by stirring things up with fantasies and humours.
    Farewell, Mamahuhu, wish you all the best. You may think Shanghai isn't the same as it in 2013, but without Mamuhuhu, Shanghai won't be the same either.

    Been following you guys for years. Watched you evolve into the professional outfit you now are. I’m very sorry that it’s over, but then again I’m not surprised. Shanghai has changed beyond recognition recently and it’s just not the same anymore. The trickle of old school expats leaving has turned into a flood. People who I considered lifers have moved on from China and I am one of them. I’ve tried repatriation, but I’m just not ready for that yet.

      @@jonsmith5626 The "Beijing Effect", for a lack of a better term. Everything became a lot more strict. Stuff like constant police raids last year really put a damper on things. One second, you're enjoying a beer with some good friends, and the next you have a number written on your hand as you wait in line to give a hair and urine sample to the police. Two and a half hours later, you're free to continue your night. As a middle aged, law abiding adult, it was a drag to have to go through that, and constantly have it in your mind that it could happen again at any time.

      @@SeaToSkyImages damn I didn't know that shanghai was like that too since it's a bit more "open" than the the rest of China. I'm in Beijing and it definitely has been going downhill since at least 2016, when there was a wave of closures and crackdowns on foreigner bars. Since then the city has become a soulless place. Anything remotely fun is forbidden, and there is very little to do apart from the usual KTV and hotpot. It is very sad for those people like me who experienced China as a vibrant place.

      @@jetw9522 Hey Jet. The government rolled out a campaign to rid Shanghai of "undesirable foreigners", so they started to do random drug tests at popular pubs, bars and restaurants around the city during the weekends in 2019. If the police suspected that you were a potential drug user, they'd go to your home late at night, and bring you in to the police station. They'd use samples of your hair and urine to determine if you'd used any drugs within the last six months. The tests didn't determine whether someone had used drugs in China though, just if there were traces of a drug in your system, so more than a few foreigners were kicked out of China for smoking weed legally in their home country, but it staying in their system for months afterwards.

      There is a general feeling that China has gradually become less friendly to foreigners in the past 10 years. For example, one thing that is referred to in the video is that there have been increasing numbers of police raids in places were foreigners go (bars, their own apartments or in my case my own office) and forcing people to pee in cups for drug tests, etc. For me this general feeling was one of the reasons I moved out of the country a few years ago.

    The line about it all being an escape, but not being able to escape the escape is bang on. I left Shanghai in July 2019 and I cried like a baby in the Didi to the airport. I've missed it so much and accepted a job offer to go back in November 2019, with a start date in February 2020. Obviously that didn't happen. I'm still very much wanting to go back as soon as it's possible to do so, but eventually I know I'm going to have to say goodbye to Shanghai forever because ultimately I want to start a family in my home town, and that breaks my heart. Leaving Shanghai the first time is the hardest thing I ever did. I already know leaving the second time is going to be just as hard.

      Sorry to hear about your struggle to get back into China. I've been in a similar situation, myself. I lived in Shenzhen and really loved it. I think the next time I go back to China, I'd like to go to Shanghai. I'm wondering if you could speak to the idea that they are getting across in this video? I.e The "old" and "vibrant" Shanghai is in jeopardy..... Just wondering if you have any thoughts on that? Do you think people should be put off by the way Shanghai is going?

    • @nightknight7208
      @nightknight7208 Před 4 lety +2

      @@michaelodonovan3732 I only lived in Shanghai for a couple of years so hopefully someone more qualified can give you more info, but I'll give you my opinion as a relatively short-term expat for what that's worth. I think Shanghai and Shenzhen are probably quite similar as very westernized tier 1 cities. It's amazing how quickly Shanghai can change. Just in the couple years I was there, the walk from the station to my office was completely changed by demolishing old buildings and building new roads, etc. There absolutely was a noticeable difference in the number of cameras everywhere. Then there's the introduction of the social credit system. I think a lot of the negative changes are political, too. Since Xi came to power, it's very noticeable how he's caused the country to go 'back into its shell' and there seems to be growing xenophobia due to CCP propaganda. Also, there are retaliatory crackdowns, like when the Huawei CFO was arrested in Canada, suddenly a number of Canadian citizens were arrested for "espionage". Honestly, it's hard to predict whether things are going to continue going this way, it really depends on the political situation more than anything. I think the main concern is the direction it's going in, not necessarily how far along in that direction it already has gone. Again, I'm sure there are a lot of people more qualified than I who can give you more info.

    Awesome short! I am now living back in the states, but I used to show some of your videos to my 12th grade Literature class when I was teaching at an international high school in Shanghai. My class loved them! I truly miss Shanghai and all of the Chinese and lao wai friends that I meet during my journey in China. Shanghai is a magical place. I think the movie "Lost in Translation" is a universal favorite among expats. All expats share a unique bond that only they can truly understand. One of my most unforgettable experiences living in Shanghai was meeting some of the Mamahuhu cast at Cantina Agave on Christmas day in 2017. I was having dinner with a buddy, and to my pleasant surprise they were seated right behind us. I didn't recognize anyone at first, but then I heard the unmistakable voice of Andy, and then saw his unmistakable beard (haha) I also met Matt and Alessio that evening. A memory that I will always cherish!

    My last time in China was in 2011, and my life since then has had almost no China contact as I moved to a new country where I have been making a home and totally different kind of life. But I have watched and loved your videos because they made me feel some connection to my past experiences. So many of your videos were relatable and made me remember so many little things, like the hot water cure and walking backwards, the total depression at Christmastime and the awkwardness and longing upon returning home. Some touched something at the core of the expat in China experience in ways that I find indescribable, like the dying and reappearing at the airport skit. Others, like anything about Chinese social media and apps post 2011, were totally new to me, but I felt like your videos were a way to keep up. Transitions are hard, but when I look back, the transition years have been some of the most interesting and rewarding. All the best to the whole cast past and present, and thank you very much for making these videos for so many years.

Feel a bit sad, but I'm sure it's not the end and I'll keep checking out new work of you guys, thanks for the links in the description. I actually came to China (Beijing) 3.5 years ago, although that's not too long ago, I also feel the change tbh, it's just becoming more and more stringent, taking away this sense of freedom I fell in love with when I first came here. I must say 2020 with this virus situation made that much worse. I'm sad that nice, intelligent and interesting people like you guys are leaving China, hoping for the best for the future of China's people and wish you guys all the best! • @r0conscious
      @r0conscious Před 4 lety +4

      @@madrigale6396 I wish I could give you a good answer to that question, I'm also very interested in the future of China, but there's so much going on now in China, in the world and in the relationships between China and many other countries. Because of that I feel like it could go into many different directions, but I think China is definitely not giving up on their regime anytime soon and the world is also not going to give in to it, so that means lots of friction, which means a lot of what might happen is pretty unpredictable imo. What I do know is that China is developing more and more, that's also why it's becoming more stringent, more serious, also towards foreigners. And in many ways this is just normal, of course not anyone should be allowed to come to China and just earn simple money as a foreigner for working illegally like many do here (teachers, dancers, models, etc.), they should be stricter in some ways. But I do think, just like portrait in this video, that their technology focused on control over its citizens is getting more and more out of hand and I'm afraid the future will definitely see much more of that, which I think is pretty worrisome. Anyways, I hope the people of China will be able to keep developing more in terms of income and education like they've been doing the last few decades. So many of them really are lovely, hard working people, really, many of them have tough lives and I just wish them the best future

      @@r0conscious As an Indian, we will love such technology that controls citizens so crimes drop down. As a student who studied medicine in New York, I wish it was more safer and stricter. Looking back at my American journey that ended in 2020 and my Indian work life that started in 2020 itself, I can say this technology is what keeps China organised. And I do not wish that they ever back down from it. Otherwise the result is the same as what we get to see in California these days. Anyone who do not wish to live this way, is also free to leave. No one is bounding you!

    I waited on purpose watching this one. Now I will set myself down with a cup of coffee and enjoy your last production under the Mamahuhu banner. Thanks guys, thanks for the years of entertainment you gave us, and farewell.
    Edit: just finished watching and here's my brief review.
    First off, this is Mamahuhu on a whole new level. Top notch acting without overdoing it, same goes for filming/production, hats off to the team. Both Adam and Matt have shown their qualities as actors here, hands down.
    * spoiler alert *
    This short movie is clearly inspired by the likes of "Her" (2013) and "Lost in Translation" (2003) with the latter being shown in snippets throughout the movie, nice touch.
    The main story describes life in Shanghai as the city becomes more and more overwhelmed with CCTV cameras watching your every move. Both Adam and Matt become entangled in a weird kind of relationship as the cameras become "human" and assume the identity of Scarlett Johansson through voice communication, with a definitive weird-out sex scene between Adam and "Scarlett" (watch at own discretion).
    The story comes to an end as Matt and Adam meet again, clearly disappointed over "Scarlett" having left as the people behind her identity are being replaced by AI, and make their way to the roof for a final goodbye, hitting the feels hard.
    Matt, Adam and the crew: again THANK YOU VERY MUCH, take of yourselves.
    P.S. I'd love to see a behind on the scenes on this :-)
