  • We take a walk around Kodiak, Alaska. We walk all the way to Fort Abercrombie State Park.
The ship provided transportation from the port to the visitor's center (about 1 mile away).
On Viking that bus ride was their 'included shore excursion'.
Kodiak is beautiful and less commercialized than some other ports like Juneau or Ketchikan.
The walk down to Fort Abercrombie was nice. It is about 4 miles (6.4 km) from the Visitor's Center.

I lived there in 1977 worked on an old powder scow 85 footer and fished for King Crab. We appreciated the Coast Guard!

Grew up on Kodiak in the late 70s to 87.
It was nice to see a little bit of the town again.
That red is from the iron in the rocks leaching thru.
The Trident seafood processing is a WW2 liberty ship that was beached after the earthquake to supplement the destroyed canneries from the tidal wave.
That National wildlife building use to be down by the airport but did not get alot of visitors so they moved the operation to the town (was not in town when I was there).

The pizza joint across from the parking lot of the supermarket when I was there was called "Captains Keg". It was on the second floor.
We lived out at Nimitz Park since dad was Coast Guard.

I lived at Kodiak as a child from 1961 to 1963 when my dad was stationed at the Navy Base. Back then, the only paved road was from the edge of town to the Navy Base.

ETN 2 Control tower electronics. One day in 1966 I went along runway to the sign DO NOT ENTER. I thought for civilians, WRONG, out of nowhere, in dark of day, you guys jumped me etc. It took call from division officer to get your loving detachment to release me. Never did that one again.

Looks so different then when I lived there in 76 and 77 and a rare sunny day must be july or early August. Near island used to have ponies there and no bridge or marina.

The ship washed ashore during the great Alaskan earthquake. They couldn't get it off land so they turned it into a canary. As far as I remember.

I built a moss-covered lean-to between Wal-Mart and the public library and lived there for a month while walking the docks every day looking for a crab job. I'd go the the library every day and practice my Spanish in a Spanish-English chat room. Met my wife online there and have been married 13 years now.
Somewhere on the island is my abandoned short bus with a Lazy Boy recliner as the passanger seat. It says "Jesus of the Nazarene" on the side but we participated in a lot of illicit, non-Jesusy activities in that bus. I spent a LOT of hours walking those streets in pouring rain, soaked to the bone and dead batteries in my walkman (yes, I still had a walkman). Does a taxi there still cost like $27 for a 4 minute ride!?

USN ETN 2 1967-68 . Did you know Kodiak military base stored and did other things with Nukes. A marine detachment assigned. They were serious. I was ET for the aircraft control electronics in control tower thus I saw the nukes going in and out. Marines stationed in own qtrs next to runway. Did you know Kodiak has an operational ICBM base that does launch missiles over the North Pole.
    google.

Kodiak resistant here....please tell me you didn't call "near Island" "fort Abercrombie" the national park is way farther than the town. It's out of the city limits and is school to north Star elementary and near Island is by the high school and middle school in near the center of town. Also hope you had a good visit. So far the weather looks gorgeous in the video

    • @PortMonkeys
      @PortMonkeys  Před 2 lety

We don’t think so. We’ve been to Kodiak twice. The first time we walked down to Ford Amercrombie, and the second time we walked over to Near Island. I’m pretty sure we knew the difference. Near Island was near the ship. Fort Abercrombie was a long walk. Thank you for your comments and thank you for subscribing to our channel.
