Kinda funny to me that folks perceive other collectibles as “normal” : stamps, coins, watches, teacups, first editions of books, baseball cards… But maybe because knives have such a clear-cut functional purpose - it’s hard to separate the function and perceive the collectible aspect… 🤷‍♂️
It’s enjoyable to watch you two converse / banter - thank you for creating such videos 😊😎

Dude....you lucked out big time. You're a super nice decent guy, BUT, your wife is SO tolerant! First the Pastoralist hat thing, then the knife for her birthday. The term Bobbitized comes to mind. This was a very fun video. THANKS TO BOTH OF YOU! Happy Birthday, Theresa (sp)!! Maybe you should rename this channel to Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors And Family Counseling.

You know how you can look at certain things (not just knives, pretty much anything) and narrow it down to within a few years of when they came out, but others just look timeless, like when you look at an early 90s NSX and it still looks great today, but an 80s Countach is peak 80s design. That's the difference between trendy design and timeless design.
There's nothing objectively wrong with trendy designs, but there's something special about a design that looks good at any time in any situation. That's the Sebenza.

  • @pateralus9
    @pateralus9 Před 2 lety +47

Tree, you're the best. I hardly ever say stuff like this, but you two are genuinely cute together!
I'm so glad she's honest here about knives. I collect & am always searching for the next thing, & am always justifying another purchase like a lot of us.
But at the same time, I admit it's completely ridiculous to have more than, say two knives. And I only say two instead of one because it's good to have a backup in case anything happens to the first. But that's it.
And yet, I still own about thirty knives. Which isn't even all that bad compared to a lot of us! And I try to keep the value on the most expensive ones at less than $300. And even then, only about ten of them are worth more than about $150 USD.
Anyway, I love hearing a truly honest opinion from someone who's got a completely untainted view of the knife & EDC world (aside from any tainting Pete has done to you already subconsciously haha). Pete, your wife is clearly an intelligent & kind woman. And funny!! :o)

Your discussion brings up a very good point about how to carry your edc. While most edc afflicted seem to focus on “what” to carry the decision seems to be determined by the “how” to carry options. In your pocket is only convenient when your pockets are not full with other must have items. Adding a pouch or bag seems to lead to attempting to carry more rather than conveniently carrying the organized necessities. The emptying of the purse seems to confirm this. Having said that, the purse with the bow on the side paired with the Fossil watch is a very classy combination. It reminds me of the saying “ Fashion is fickle but style is timeless”. Well done!

I am a woman who bought her first knife (on old Olsen lockback) 30 years ago and today have about100 of all types, modern and traditional. I gave my wife a lightning OTF with dagger profile and a beautiful We Knife Cirrus. The lightning sits in a kitchen cupboard and is used almost daily for Amazon boxes. I think she would as easily use scissors but ended up enjoying the OTF action and showing it off to her friends. The We sits in her dressor drawer. I dont believe it has so much as opened a letter.
Great vid man. I think many of us can relate to this experience.

I found your channel today via your "British Shorthair Cat Review" and absolutely dig what you're doing here! Just a quick anecdote regarding how I started carrying a flashlight/torch: I too had used my phone for a light as needed, however I was working on a snowblower machine and scratched the shit out of the glass screen (expensive flagship type device). I ordered my first EDC flashlight that evening. For those of us fortunate enough to have reasonable pockets in our wardrobes it was a seamless addition. Things like the Streamlight Microstream with a AAA battery are such a convenient form factor that I've never second-guessed the decision. My wife uses my flashlight often as well, but primarily due to pocket limitations she does not carry one -- even though she acknowledges the value proposition. Cheers!

This is my favourite knife video of all time. Your wife is awesome and her watch looks sweet :D It's completely true, there's no good reason for an urbanite who doesn't go hiking/camping every weekend to carry a knife (I often go for walks in nature to do some bird photography or just for the exercise, but even then a keyring torch has been more useful thana knife). For handy-man or other trade-related purposes, there's usually a better tool for the job that you can carry in a tool bag/box, or a simple Stanley knife will actually be better or at least do the trick. If you do end up carrying one all the time, you will eventually come across a time when it comes in handy, and without it you might have had to improvise something else, but you'll be carrying it for no reason 99.99% of the time. Often just having one in your glove box, centre console or bag/backpack/briefcase is likely to make sure that on the odd occasion you might need one, you've got one available (and if you keep it in your car it can be one of those belt-cutter & glass-breaker combos as a par of your safety kit, but most knife people hate those, heh).
Really, blokes just like the man-jewellery aspect and they have this fantasy that they can seem both useful/prepared and stylish and maybe slightly dangerous/cool to random people if and when someone needs one for something and they can, ahem, whip it out and show it off. I say just investigate what's out there and choose the best for your purposes so you've got one on the off-chance you ever need one more directly handy than a kitchen knife, and then get on with your life. TBH, the fact that Knife Centre in the US can upload a "new knives of the week" video every single week and there are so many designs and people dedicate so much time to geeking out over their specs and stuff is all a bit weird and sad - it's time, energy and money that could go inti more important things or things that would at least get more use Iike scented candles ;) ). And the people who pay thousands of dollars for "safe queens" when most of us are struggling to even pay the power bill and you could buy a decent 2nd hand car for the same price... disgusting to me.

The discussion about what knife one uses in the kitchen was interesting. I always have a knife in my pocket at home (currently my big Crooked River) and generally use the pocket knife rather than open the drawer to grab a kitchen knife. After use it gets a quick clean with a disinfectant wipe and back in the pocket.

Just goes to show some things are universal - like our partners being supportive but not really understanding our obsessive hobbies. I tried with my wife and through the tears of laughter she settled on the Victorinox. She has since used the knife many times - to remove the wrappers of chupa chups, which are too tough for my little kids. The scissors have saved more than one cracked nail and twice she used the knife at a picnic. I guess that counts as EDC and I’m claiming that justifies all the money I spend.

I often work with Ranch type guys, and they usually carry a knife, but a lot of them carry scissors in a sheath as well. Scissors are prolly gonna be the next TACTICOOL accessory, because the fact is, they work. Well.
Circly is my new fabborit technical knife term. "Squishy" is second. I love a circly squishy knife.
However, I'll be selling all my knives because the hobby is ruined for me. Thanks wife.

Love your wife! She is such a good sport. I’m a mom, and I use my knives all the time. Cutting the little plastic strings that attach tags to new clothes, cutting tape when opening packages, cutting open plastic packaging whe the “pull here” tab fails and rips off, opening plastic clamshell packaging, cutting down cardboard boxes to fit better into recycling bin, cutting off the long hair that gets wrapped around the beater roller bar of my vacuum cleaner, slicing gigantic pizza/hot dogs at the Costco food court (plastic knives suck)… so many uses! There was a spell where it was so useful to have a knife when out and about with toddlers and having to cut food down to pea-sized pieces.
If you buy your wife a bouquet of fresh cut flowers, a very sharp knife is essential when cutting the bottom inch of the stems so the flowers can drink the water. Scissors will crush the plant cells and the flowers won’t be able to thrive as long. (Hint-hint!)

Good choice. Minor suggestion: If you're going to reverse grip, flip the knife around so the edge is out and away from you; this also gives a more secure grip, and if it does slip it will cut a finger instead of your palm. It's much less likely to slip because your choil is gripped with the fingers instead of sitting on your palm.

For my dad I bought a generic wood handled lock-back. For my mum I bought an Opinel Breakfast & Brunch, and a garden knife. I'm pretty sure they aren't going to want an ESEE.

Your wife has the same attitude about pocket knives as my wife/daughter. Both of them are certain that I only need one, they all do the same thing and look the same. They don’t understand that each one has its own job and and and and….😂 I’ve given them their own knives but it’s an uphill battle. I wish my wife would carry a 4” blade, my daughter isn’t ready yet.
My wife carries a Spyderco Honeybee. It’s a good ‘little’ knife but even that is still in its box.

Aww you both look so dang wonderful together! I love that you have a good home life, internet funny man.
Edit 1: This vid comes on the heels of getting a brand new knife a few days ago and I'm starting to ask myself some serious questions about my hobby lol
Edit 2: I'd love to hear your thoughts on this interview after the fact. What are the elements of the hobby beyond the utility of just having something sharp nearby?

2:55 I got into a multiple person argument about this. You could use a tiny SAK for everything. Everything else is just extra credit.

Very interesting video, I feel your pain Pete. My wife doesn’t really like knives. But she saw my Lightning OTF, and played with it a little bit. Then she said “I’d carry and use one of these” So I bought her 2 LOL. 1 lives in her purse, and the other one in the drawer in the kitchen. I just thought it was funny, because she liked the Lighting better than my Spyderco’s lol.

The Cold Steel Hold Out 1 is still the best folding knife ever made.
The 6" full flat ground blade basically is a folding chef's knife and you could carve a turkey with that knife just as well as anything you find in the kitchen.

Ah the dreaded handbag of the wife, never go in there, never look. They could make a horror movie for blokes based on the items that can be found in their handbags. Awesome video, thanks for posting.

Same reaction when I gave my wife a Victorinox. She occasionally uses it and I just grin.
Now she's got a Mora fixed blade with her too 😂

Fun video. They said in Russia that tampons are good to stuff in bullet holes, so another multipurpose EDC item. :)

Maybe a pretty Alox Swiss Army knife with a useful pair of scissors, nail file, tweezers, toothpick, etc.
A stylish small multi tool for each bag.
