    Very timely stuff, I spoke with my local airport manager recently and he is excited to have PPG. We went over the pattern and what part I should use - a grass section between the concrete runway and taxiway.
    I was used to radio calls from doing helicopters in the 1990s but that was a while ago! We also do the same calls when using a drone under an FAA Authorization.
    One thing I notice PPGs do more like planes than helicopters is your pattern. In the helicopter we had very small patterns since we were much slower and more maneuverable. Planes use a rectangle pattern, with four 90° turns. Helicopters used an oval pattern. From takeoff to crosswind to downwind is one sweeping 180° turn instead of two 90° turns.
    I’ve got my aviation radio ready! Going to do more ground handling this weekend and hope to be in the air July 9th.

    Thank you Avery for this video. My airport manager in Boone just asked me to get an aviation transceiver so I could communicate w/ air traffic. This info is super helpful for me.

    As a licensed private pilot and a powered paraglider I don't like flying PPG in the pattern. We're way slow compared to aircraft! I rather come in below pattern alt. and land. If I were flying an aircraft I'd rather not see a paramotor in the pattern and have to worry about overtaking them! I don't get why airfield managers want us to use the pattern?

      Our pattern should be 500 ft compared to GA at 1000, and jet aircraft at 1500.
      That should alleviate issues, especially if we do short finals and clear the field fast.
      Also, in most other airports we don't usually use the main runway.

      My airport manager basically asked us to fly the same pattern as General Aviation, and to have comms. But to come down from 1000 feet takes me a while... I just make sure to listen. If I'm on the grass strip to the side of the runway, I won't even kite the wing while they're landing or taking off. Usually I'll also notify them, "There's a green paraglider on the grass strip but I'm going to keep it on the ground until you land". And if someone else is getting close to the airport when I'm in the air, I'll break off and leave. They have the right of way, and I don't want to be turned into hamburger.

      I agree 100%, nobody wants a 30 mph aircraft mixed into their traffic pattern, we just don't fit. If you can devise an ultralight pattern that doesn't intersect the ga pattern and explain to the airport manager why that is they will usually go along with it...

    Could you make a video on what you use for navigation/altitude/etc? I saw some talk of a hacked kobo as a flight computer and I saw you did an opengauge project which isnt on your youtube.

      Well, since gaggle came along it kind of does everything I've ever wanted. I built the open gauge project before I actually started flying and once I realized how easy flying really was personally I don't need much. I will definitely make a video on gaggle soon though, and maybe the open gauge stuff in case anybody's ever looking for it

    I would like to know more about your radio setup. What kind of radio is it? How is it mounted? You mentioned it was BT audio. Do you have a remote PTT?

      The short answer: the helmet is a BMX helmet with 3m muffs and a sena SMH10 Bluetooth headset. I am using an Icom IC-A16B aircraft radio with built in Bluetooth. It lives in a little dual radio chest carrier rig from Amazon. I don't have a remote ptt, you can see me reach down to my chest and press it manually.

    Dont i hear the ATC videos with the pilots saying THEIR name last, not the airport or controller? Is it different for non managed airports? 👍😁

      Yes, especially when it's an immediate and direct answer to ATC it's not needed. Also no airport nearby is going to be on that same frequency. From this uncontrolled strip I can clearly hear at least 3 other airport's comings and goings, so it's a little more important to know what traffic you were talking to, and the begining of the transmission is often lost to squelch.
      I'm no FAA official, I'm sure there's official reasonings, but that's just what I've observed.

      That's different between headsets and radios. I have the icom radio connected to my headset as a phone, and my phone connected to the headset as a device. The device doesn't get microphone access but it does let the icom radio have priority.

      i mean you are slim but jeeez.
      almost vertical.such a joy to see you launch. looks easy. i am running my lungs out and can get barely of the ground even on a moster 185 before.
      my electric motor is done and ready to test fly but weather dont want to play nice this month. i hope with 100kg thrust i have better chance to launch a bit faster

      @@cloudpandarism2627 I had to get very good at launching, flying the slow and draggy ozone Mojo and lugging around the gravity defiant at 75 lbs (34 kg) is hard. I only weigh 160 lbs (72 kg). So if I don't get the wing overhead and get the form right to hit the throttle immediately I'm not leaving the ground!

      @@AveryFlies i see. i am so heavy i fly a 31m APCO karisma ENA and its still too small. max weight is 160kg and i am ready to fly with my clunky gasoline crap engine around 165-170kg. i cant even launch without wind. forward launches are my biggest nightmare. thats why i love fly at the beach where i have a smooth and rather strong breeze every time. reverse launches are no problem. you got mail good sir

      I had the same problem with mine so I emailed Gin about it. A day or two later, Chris from SuperFly Paragliding called me and gave me a bunch of advice to help with that. Basically, my hang point was off and I was tilted back too much. Also, I set my trimmers a little bit asymmetrically now. It really helped. I'm flying a Vantage 3 26m with a Parajet Maverick Moster 185 at around 130 all up weight.

    Great video :) I also like to contact with possible traffic, but even though I have a good radio ( ICOM AERIAL BAND ) I cant hardly understand what they tell me because of quality sound!!! Many glitches, interferences and the engine sound.... Is there any way to avoid all those glitches? I have the squelch to its maximum value 10

      If there sounds like a buzzing in the background, it could be interference from your engine. I would suggest ground shielding the spark plug wire, that helped my audio quality a lot

      @@AveryFlies I own a moster 185 and I think the ignition pipe is ground shielded, but I'm not sure... Could you explain me how to groundshield it? maybe you could post a video? ;)

      Yeah, I need to do it on my atom 80, I'll do that soon! You need a stainless steel cable wrap and ground it to the engine.
