How To Choose a Power Supply for RGB LED lights / Formula to figure out watts for LED's

  • How To Choose a Power Supply for RGB LED lights? I'll teach you how to work the formula so you can select the correct power supply for any LED lighting project. The formula to figure out watts for LED's. I'll show you the different sizes and how to install a plug to the power supply. You'll need some basic tools. Box knife, Phillips screw driver and a wire stripper. If have any questions afterwards feel free to contact me and I'll be glad to help you.     One more point, on the side of must Power Supply there is a red switch that you will need a small screwdriver that you will need to push to 110V from 220V. Because these Power Supply are used world wide they have two settings to accommodate European or USA power.

    you sir have quite good knowledge about electronics especially with small things that can make major differences in electronics like putting the wire on the left side of the screw and twisting the insulation until it breaks. very awesome

      that is really not a way to do it but if you want to it will work just as good as long asyou have a good contact with the copper wire.

    hi. i have a 12v 40amp dc power supply with multiple outlets.3 to be precise. (similar to the ones you are using) i need to be able to draw 30+ amps in order to power a single load. how do i go about getting the required amps? do i wire the three outlets in parallel? please advise

    Your video is in reference to strip LEDs. I need to power 24 LEDs each being 3.0-3.2V .20mA (they are all white 10mm). I think I calculated I need 64v and of course resistors along with that. LEDs are soldered in parallel.
    Since outlets in North American are 120V, I would like to use an adapter from my pile of adaptors which basically have output DC of 4.5v to 18v. I have not been able to figure out how to use input source from outlets (or adaptors) for my LED project..Any suggestions would be helpful.

    As someone familiar with electricity, volts, amps & watts, I thought your per foot discussion was worthless. Wouldn’t a per bulb calculation make more sense. You discussion of power sources was great.

      You can use power supply for other items as long its the same voltage and the amps is under 8.5A. Unfortunately not the compressor because it is 30A

      In this video I do talk about how to figure out the size transformer you will need. Just by saying 80ft of 3000K is not enough to give you an answer. You will need some information from the manufacture to calculate your needs. You may want to look at the video again or in my channel which I have other videos that talks about this subject also and what you information you need for the formula, in fact do not forget to subscribe and give my video a thumbs up, this is one way that you can support my channel and get notified on other new videos.     Hi thanks for help there, very informative. Wee question ; Should i be worried about the power supply / led driver being placed in an insulated loft area ? I mean, do they generate a lot of heat, enough to cause a fire ?

      Very good question, in the 12 years working with LED'S and PS I have never had a PS burn out. Some are fanless and other have fans to keep them cool. As you are aware that there is always that possibility. When I install them in attics, I mount them on the trusses to keep them away from the insulation and I have not had any issues. You need to take all precautions, so if you are not familiar in how to install then hire a license electrician and hopefully it will give that peace of mind. I hope this helps.

    Iv bought a 12v 40 amp out put and the inlet is 230v that’s uk mains supply from a house wall socket.
    So can you tell me what fuse I need to put in the plug that goes in the wall to supply the unit Iv bought please
    Really hope you can answer this question because if finding it hard to find an answer. Even the supply’s can tell me

But if you are wanting 12v out put. They do have power supply that has a switch that would work for 110v or 230v in and out put 12v. I hope this helps you.     Thanks for your video! I am doing a bathroom with just the white LED's, and I have 3 different locations all on separate dimmer switches. Section-1 is 3ft (Shower), Section-2 is 2ft (Toilet), Section-3 30ft (Build-in Closet). All together definitely under 50ft Can I Combine these all into 1 large or 2 small power supplies? Thanks.

      Yes you can. Just calculate the watts the the LEDS are pulling so you can figure out the size power supply you need and do not forget to add 10 to 20% wiggle room.       Dwayne, I'm not sure if you thought about this but in the closet you may want to consider a sensor. As you walk in it turns on automatically and you can adjust it to stay on for 1 or 3 or 5min

    Thank you for this video. I am hoping you can help me with a question. I’m looking to hardwire one of these PS, as a drop in replacement for a 12VAC PS, so I can convert to leds with dc power. The current PS is hardwired and wired to a wall on off switch on the incoming end (so two wires to each line,neutral and ground screw), and wired to a splitter to run 12v in two directions on the outgoing end. Are the power supplies like the ones you featured in this video suitable for that purpose? Thanks for any guidance you can provide

      yes. most 12V PS can handle 110 to 220V and they can be hardwired in. I hope this helps you

    Hi! What is the normal temperature to which power supply can run? Recently used 150w 12v 10A to run 90w of led strip and its getting quite warm but able to hold in hand

      I'm not able to answer that question. May I suggest to call the manufacture and ask them. Some have fans and other does not. It is also good to place it in an area that has ventilation. Some does not required ventilation. I hope this helps

    I’m not installing lights but it’s in the same area. I’m powering a 12v 80 W fan to my Industrial 30 gallon 120 ac air compressor air dryer system. I already purchased a 110/220 12v transformer and actually I going to hook up 2 fans and connect to the compressor power supply. The transformer can accommodate both because of the additional connectors. My question is am I using the right application if not please let me know.

      I'm not able to answer that question because I do not know your system. All I can say is that you need to every careful because There is low voltage AC and low voltage DC and your equipment must be inline with what you are powering up.

    Im putting 4 16.5 strips on my camper, im using a 5volt 60 amp power supply. I was going to hook it up as uou said in you video, is that too much power. Im using WS2812B LED Strips

      I do not know what the amp per foot is. If you are able to get that info from the manufacture and make the calculation as per the video and give your self between 10 to 20% wiggle room, then you should be OK.

    i have 4 lengths of pixil tape can i put 2 24v power supplies on the beginning and the middle?

      I'm not familiar with pixil tape. But most 12v and 24v LEDS you are able to put power on front end and the middle and on the end because the power can travel either way, except if it is a one directional LED or must get power on one end only. I hope this helps

      Hello Michael, in order to answer that question you need to know the amps per foot. Then you are able to calculate the formula that it's in the video. My suggestion is to contact the manufacturer and ask for the amps per foot on the LED'S you have. Then you can figure the answer. I hope this helps

    Thank you very much for the valuable information provided. Recently I bought a 12 volt power supply 360 watt for my landscaping lights and it came with two sets of output leads. If I am using a total wattage of 250, do I need to join both the outputs together and then connect to the lights or is it enough if I just use one of the outputs and ignore the other?

      I'm sorry but your description is not totally clear. Maybe explain it in a different beay. Also when it comes to landscape lights, 90% of the time it will be AC low voltage and DC. You need to make sure which one it is.

      @@thebesthowtobyclem6908 Sorry, I am a newbie in this field. Recently I bought 10 led spike lamps that works with MR16 bulbs (LED)12 volt DC from Amazon, GKOLED-Landscape-Voltage-Garden-Spotlight.
      Since the main power we have here is AC220 volt, I was advised by a friend to use a led driver to convert the AC220 to DC12volt and to connect the lamps serially. So I purchased a 360 watt 220V to 12V DC 30A driver, considering future expansion (constant voltage model)
      This came with one input wire 170-250V and two sets of 12V DC output wires which i was referring to in my previous post.
      I have not connected the system yet. Could you please advise if I am using the right power supply vs. electrical fixtures. Thanks and regards

I'm simply teaching and how to hook up LEDs with controllers and power supplies and how to solder and make it work. And the formula how to select the proper power supply.

    What if the Chips On Board LED lights(COB)?
    It is just take the watts times the amount pieces that we want to connect and then times 20% too?

      I do have a COB light but it's uses a 110 direct. You will need the manual tell you how many watts the device is and then add your 20%. A COB light is a different animal so I'm sorry that I can't help you more than what I did. LED strip and neon LEDS are my specialty.

    I was hoping you could help me with a question, I have a MEANWELL LRS-100-5,
    18 AMP power supply, it has 2 sets of outputs, my question is do both pairs of outputs carry the full 18 amp or is the 18 amp split between them, for example 9 amp each?

    so in case i want to use a two prong, do the colors going correctly to L and N matter since the plug can be plugged into the wall outlet interchangeably between upside down and right side up?

      kind of. you can but if you are able to feel one of the cable to have some rigged and the other one is smooth. the rigged one is the one I put the load or L = Black wire

    If you need yo go over a sink or stove using extension wires between two sections of strips, how does that effect this calculation?
    I will need a strip of lights about 6 ft long on each side of my sink and then another 2ft strip on the other side kf the stove (the stove will be at the other end of the strip of lights to the left of the sink). I expect to need about 8ft of extension wire over the sink and another 8ft over the stove. I anticipate needing to inject power at some location. But I'm not sure where.
    I hvent selected the lights yet so i dont know how many watts per foot yet. Im hoping you might be able advise on a formula I can use.

      it is still the same formula. You add the amount of feet of LED. it looks like about 14 feet total. depending on the amount of watts per foot you will need about 100 watts if its real bright . just make sure you get the info for the LED's. some time on the package of 16 feet or 5 mm it will let you know what is the watts you need for that roll. once you have that info then you can divided that per foot then if you need more than 16 feet you can determine how much watts you need. just follow the formula in the video.       If you are talking about the length of the wire, that is not an issue. For that short of a run you can still use 22/4 Gage wire. All of the wire will end up at the controller or power supply.

      Hello Alexander, you will need to purchase 9 packages that comes with 16'4" to give you the 140 feet you want to cover. Depending on how amps per feet or per package you will need to calculate the formula that I give on my video. Just make sure when you purchase the LED'S that you also find out the amps. For an example if it's 12V LED'S 1.4 amps per foot times 140 that would be 196 times 10% it puts you around 215W so a 250W 12V. Just go over the my video one more time and follow my directions.       The ideal situation is to have it as close as you can. There are times that you have no choice. One way is to run a heavier gauge wire like a 18G. When it comes to LED wire my go to is 22G but on long runs 18G will work. To solder an 18G directly to the LEDs can have to much tension so one option is to solder a 22G pigtail about 8 inches directly to the LED'S strip then connect the 22G and the 18G wires with a wire nuts.

    hello..this is a great video, please I hv a project currently working on for one of my client
    The controller, Led and power supply has been fully installed.
    now where we are having issue is how the light displays on each of the 10letters which are about 6ft in height for each of the letter
    the colors suppose to display 3colors in total but all the letters should be in same color at the same time.

    Great informative video and the way you take your time delivering the information is really helpful, so thank you. i am new to the LED thing and I got the "Permanent LED Christmas LED Light" bug about a couple months ago and its too late to put them up this year since I just got them delivered but I will install them spring of 2021 when it is nicer outside for the next holiday season as well as soft white accent lighting for the upper part of the house the rest of the year. Anyways, I ordered eight BTF RGBW SK6812 LED 5 volt strips in 5 meter length and I will be wanting to put them up under my home soffit as a indirect lighting source for the soffit of the house. What my question or concern is that I have after watching countless CZcams videos of people talking about you need to "PowerInject" your LED strips every 50 to 60 LEDs for 5 volt strips and 90 to 100 LEDs for 12 volt LED strips or your LEDs will dim and or turn red. But not one of the CZcams video guys have ever shown step by step in their videos on how exactly to run the PowerInjection wire long two of three 5 meter strands of LED strips for PowerInjection and how to connect it to the LED strips as you go. I just recently heard from one of the CZcams LED guys state that you never want to plug two power supplies into the same strand of LEDs which makes sense to me. So, I bought a MeanWell slim 5 volt 60 Amp external power supply and I know I will need a fairly long length @ 100ft. of 3 wire 18 gauge wiring for the Power, Ground and Data. I also bought a controller called a DigQuad that has a set of 5 inline fuses for your power and data lines and I will be using WLED software to run the controller for effects. Anyways, I really enjoyed your videos on the LED strips and how you took your time showing clearly how to do each step. Do you think you would want to do a video on Voltage Injection and how to set it up and connect it all up with LED strips? I am sure you would have many "LED wanna be's" be interested in watching this video since no one else has really done a clear instructional video on it. No one that I have found yet anyways. Thanks again for doing those videos and I see you have many other areas of interest that I too am interested in so I have sub'd and will watch.

As per to the voltage injection, I have never heard of this. Maybe it is called something else. I need more info so I can understand. When I have done jobs that requires more than one power supply. I just divided into section and connected each section to a DMX Decoder then it is connected to a controller

      I reread your comment and I believe in what they are saying is explained in one of my LED videos already. So for an example, if you have a 12V LED strip and you are going to install 64 feet, you can connect a wire at every 16 feet so for this you would want to have inject 3 wires having 16 feet on each side. This will distribute the power evenly. As long as you have the correct power supply for the amount of LED that you are running. I hope this helps.

      I believe we are talking about the same thing. Everyone on CZcams calls this PowerInjection. They all talk about how you're going to have to do this for long runs like I will with running my SK6812 RGBW LED 5meter strips. But no one shows step by step in a video how to do it. I believe based on what they have said on CZcams if you have a long run of LED strips whether 5v or 12v you will have to run a separate positive and ground cable from the power supply along the LED strips and connect the positive and ground wire maybe at the beginning and end of the LED strips and you may have to also connect it in the middle of the strips to keep enough power getting to the strips. But they never show how to do it. Instead they all just talk about this illusive PowerInjection that you will need to do for long runs.

      Yes your are correct I have a Meanwell 350 watt 5 volt 60 amp power supply and then I will run the power and ground wire to the DigiQuad controller and the DigiQuad controller has 5 or 6 ( I forget exactly how many) fused power outlets that have separate feeds for separate controlling. I then plan on running just my initial run of SK6812 LED RGBW strips along my house soffitt. Later I will add other LED strips or strings with the other channels outlets on the controller for the windows doorway and etc.

      With 26 foot LED you can make one run as long as you connect a wire for the power at both ends. Because if you add power at one end you will lose power on a long run if it is 12V but with a 24V you are able to run one wire at one end. I hope this helps.       If you still have the package, you need to find out how much wats per package and then x two and then follow the formula on the video. My suggestion, if it's a 12V connect your low voltage in between the two 16 feet because for low voltage the power can travel both ways. But if it's 24V then you connect the low voltage wire on one end because you can do a max of 32 with 24V with out a voltage drop. I hope this helps. Any question please feel free to ask.       I understand that you are using it for LED Strips. Maybe my question was not as clear. Let me just say that if you are putting LEDs for cove lighting or to light up the ceiling then we place the PS in a closet near by that has an outlet or we place the PS in the attic near an outlet or we place the power supply in a cabinet but an outlet is near by. Then we run low voltage wire from the LEDS to the controller which will be next to the PS. No need to mount a controller to the ceiling. I hope I was able to answer your question. Please feel free to ask me a different question if I was not able to answer it correctly.

      Unfortunately I do not know the code in Cali. Are you talking about securing it to a beam a trust beam in the attic? You can secure it to a trust beam sense it is your place. When I use to do commercial building we would get a comtex box at Home Depot they are grey color in the electrical department and drill holes to let the wires in and out and then either screw the box to the trusses or just lay the box between the trusses on a plank of plywood.

    ATX computer PSU and you can put it inside a mini tower case I just bought a whole computer just for the case from the recycling centre for 10 AUD and an ATX PSU has 12 volts, 5 volts and 3.3 so as long as you get the correct gauge wire all the control hardware and PSU can be in one place and then you can power some spinning prisms and lasers at the same time.

    I have 5 pin RGB+WW strip which will have total length of 16 meters. I think power supply of 240w is better than the 200W one? Am i right saying that. Also, I do not know how to choose the right controller for that length. Can you advice on that?

      You need to figure the calculation to give you the answer for the power supply. In my video I explain how to figure it out. You must know the amps per foot to figure it out. If you do not have the one equation then you must ask your distributor for it. It is crucial to have that information then you will be able to get the correct power supply. Once you know how much feet you are going to use then you will be able to select the correct controller also. I hope this helps.

      The 194W does that include the 10% extra? If it dies then 200W power supply should be good if it does not include the 10% then go to the next one up. Each controller will tell you how much watts it can handle and or how many feet of LED'S. See photo for what I'm talking about. Also go to usledsupply.com for some great controllers. I could not attach a photo.
      Basically if you look under the details it should explain how many feet the controller can handle.

      You do not need two. For the this project I needed one 500W but when I order the materials, the supplier did not have what I wanted so instead they sent me two power supply. Because of time, I decided to use the two and show my subscribers how it can be done.

      Most PS will have a small manual adjustment but it is very minor adjustment. For the purpose of the LED's you will be OK.

      The LED'S that I use is the one that either has 2 spot connection for white LED'S or 4 RGB or 5 RGBW spot connection. If you have the 3 spot connection not familiar with that one. The LED'S light strips that I use, I do not use any drivers because I use a technique that is not needed. I have other videos on my channel that I show how to do this. Just this month I install for a family friend 20M of LED'S with out and driver and they are bright. Please subscribe to my channel and tap on the bell and select ALL so you can get the latest video.     I need an outdoor power supply of around 500 watts. Is it possible to use an indoor power supply (12v 500w) in a waterproof box? Will the fan be able to keep the power supply cool while in an enclosed waterproof box?

      Good question, you are able too. Just make sure if a few things. If you need an outdoor PS like 12v 500w you need to know if it's AC or DC. Most outdoor lights is sett up with AC PS. 95% of the time, I install DC PS. I use a water proof box and I try to purchase a PS that is fanless. But if you have no choice then you can modified the box by adding holes in the bottom for air and on the side. If you do the side you can install like a small hood or a scoop type over the drill holes and seal the edges so no water goes in. So between the two, side and bottom you can have cross ventilation. Please subscribe to my channel and hit the bell for the latest videos. I have one coming soon where I put LEDS under a Dock and the power supply are not waterproof which I requested the distributor for a fanless PS but they sent me the one with a fan. And I install it in a waterproof box.

I need to run RGBW wires since it looks like running the LED strips without a direct supply from the power source would cause the LED strips at the end dim. Is there a 5 strand exterior RGBW wire, or do I need to run it through PVC pipe?

      Most likely they have an outdoor wire 6 conductor but I'm now aware of exactly the one. I'm using a 22/6 strand indoor and putting some in a PVC pipe.

      very good question, they are design to be in the open so they can get air. They all have a protection cover where the high voltage is connected. You can mount the PS on the wall or place it in a cabinet.

      If you have a 12V LED and you are using a 240W 12V power supply to test with, it will not burn your LED. I hope this answer your question. Now for the other question. The ideal is to get a power supply that is 20% more than what you need other wise you will be wasting your money by having a bigger power supply. Thank you for subscribing.

      If you calculated your watts correctly and giving your self an added buffer, were I have several videos in my channel that explains how. You can connect them all to one Power Supply. Just remember that at every 16 feet to have a wire from the LEDS to the PS. This way you can have equal power on each strip. I hope this answer your question.       If you are able too, you can solder them from end to end but then make sure to have a pigtail at each 16 feet to the PS. Or just run a new roll and each one runs to the PS

    I have been reading the comments and replies and would like to add. I would also like to see how to add power injection in-between strips of LEDs. I spent many hours trying to read/view how this is properly done and am not sure yet how to power inject into/in-between the LED strips. For example, I have 3 strands of LED's and desire to power inject at the front, middle and end. The question I have, and many others I believe is: "What is involved to power inject in-between strands of LED's?" (Do you need a special adapter, or is this a manual soldering job, or any special tools required?). Since I am planning a long run, I will need to plan for 5-6 power injections in this long run.       Hello Ward, thank you for the feedback. As you know everyone has their own terminology so power injection is new to me. But I believe what this is in reference too is when you add another wire to tap on a strip of LED inorder for the power not to drop. Otherwise if you were to put a wire on one end, let say at the start of one inch and your LED strip is 30 feet long using a 12V what will happen next half of your lights will be dim. The benefits of LED'S low voltage you can tap in anywhere with power along the strip. So if I have a 30 feet LED strip I would tap one wire in the middle of 30 feet so at 15 feet because then the power will spread both ways. And it has to be done manually by soldering to the strip if you do not want a gap on the strip. If you do not mind a small gap then you can add wire nuts buy putting one strip to my left with a small pig tail that it comes with and to my right another strip and then wire nuts both strips to one wire lead.
      If you have 60 feet of LED'S strip then I would tap in at 15 feet then 30 feet so between each wire lead you have 15 feet on each side of the wire.
      In the future I'll make a video showing this. Plus I'll be making another video on power supply to explain more on it.

This would allow one to reduce extra work of manual soldering in-between strips. It does not look many other manufactures have this feature.

      I always do custom set up. I remove 90% of the time the wires that the manufacturer solder for each strip. Then if I'm running a long run then I solder the strips together because you do not want to see a gap between lights because you want to see a unified light shadow.

      @@thebesthowtobyclem6908 They are just the marker lamps used on mainly cars, semi trucks, etc. I found out that each lamp is .046 to .05 amps for each lamp and i have 60 times that so i am well under what my power supply assets as 36 watts, but it burned out.

      So I'm just a little confused, if your light markers are 12 volt DC You should be able to connect it direct to your battery or a fuse. I don't understand why you need a power supply for your LED markers if you're using it in your vehicle. Anytime that I do LED lights to my truck they have always been 12 volt DC and I hook it up direct to either a fuse or to the battery depending on what I'm doing.

    Good Morning Clem,. you've been helping me to prepare my 15M 3 strip install (4.6 watts per ft) so we settled on 12V 30 amp 360 watt power supply. How do I run wire to the beginning and the end of the run back to the power supply...and do it neatly? Do you suggest say 18 gauge wire from home depot, or a different gauge? Thanks Clem, stay safe

      Hello Tommy, I'm glad that you found the amps per foot. It all depends on the distance from your LEDS to the power supply. There is no set rule but for me I have gone 80 to 100 feet on the low voltage wire 22/4 but if I was to go further and have several then 18/4 would be best. Both are stranded wire. I'm not sure if Home Depot has it but I go to a specialty store that deals with audio video systems and security cameras. I have a place here in Florida call ADI that I go to. Here is there phone number and maybe you can ask if there is a place were you live and if you can our purchase from them 800-233-6261.

      @@thebesthowtobyclem6908 Thanks for getting back to me, so this is not a master bedroom, my son's is 12x10 so I'll follow your instructions and run some decent wires back down to the 320 Amp at the beginning of the run, and another line at the end of the run to distribute power equally. I will clip in the thumb-sized signal amplifiers between each 5 M strip (2 amplifiers between the 3 strips). What do you think Clem?

      Is that power supply just for that room only? It seems like an over kill. Because your LF is around 44 LF and if your amps per foot is 4.6 times 44 is around 202 plus 10 % it should put you under 230w so a 250W is more than plenty. And the 22/4 wire would be ideal because the power supply, I would imagine is going to be near by.

      @@thebesthowtobyclem6908 Yes Clem just my sons 12x10 ft bedroom, and the PS will be in his closet, 8 ft of wire from the ceiling to the floor x 2, one at the start of the run, one at the end. I won't need over 2o ft of wires. Is there any drawback to using a 320 amp if I only need 250 other than spending more than I need?

      Depending in the system. Majority of the time it would be ok. Only a few system are sensitive to to much power.

      So you need to know from the package how many watts per feet or how many watts total your LEDs are maybe look it up on Google but if not worst case scenario just figure it at 3.7 per foot because most likely you do not have a real bright LED. But it's always best to look at the package or the manufacturer to find out how much watts for total on your package which is your 17.5 mm then that you can divide per feet.       You do not need a booster. Most LEDS packs comes about 5 mm or 16.3 feet. All you need to do is have 4 low voltage wire go to your controller and solder one wire to your LED at every 16 feet. In one of my video I show you how to solder LEDS together and then you solder the low vil6 wire on the solder points. I hope this helps.

    Hey Clem, Working on a project using Cob LED Strips, the Rated power for a 20Ft run is 24V 2A, I want to connect 3 strips for a total of 60 Feet. I have chosen a 24V 14.6 Amp 350W Meanwell power supply. As I understand it I will have to inject power at the end of the run to provide the back half with more power is that correct? Also I would like to add a simple remote with on/off and dimming. I found one that is rated for 24V 10Amp. Can I simply install that at the beginning of the run and control brightness or does the front and injected power at the end both have to be connected to the controller?

      Yes , you do have to inject power on both ends. Try putting the dimmer on the main line that controls all the lights.

      You can experiment and try one way and if not then the other way. The dimmer will not damage it. It just will not dim if it's not done correctly. Just let me know if it did or not work out for you.

      Power supply are cheap so my suggestion is that you figure out the amount of LEDS fist then you can calculate how much power you need just like in the video shows. I hope this helps.

    Hi sir, I just have a question if someone can help,
    I have a smart strip light 25w/m at 24v , and a controller 240w /24v , so if I want 10 meters or more of strip lights , am I just have to calculate the total consumption of the strip and I use a power supply according to the result? Or I should also calculate the led controller since it is on same circuit?
    Example 10 meters strip of 25w/m = 250w , is it enough to use a powet supply of 300 w or I have do the bellow due to the led controller :
    10mtr led *25=250w
    Led controller 240 w
    250+240 =490w total of led controller and strip light
    So power supply of 600w ..
    I hope I explained my issue well , thabks in advance to anyone can help..

      300w sounds good and you are giving yourself more than 10 to 20% for wiggle room. But your controller can only handle 240w so you might need a 2nd controller and split the load. You might be able to take a chance with one controller but it might not last if you use it on the maximum load.

      Hello Gian, thank you for watching, I'm not sure if you did watch the video but I do give the formula in how to figured out what size power supply you will need. If you can look at the video again but more carefully but remember that it is very important that you must know what is the amps per foot of the LED'S that you are using. This information is normally on the package or you can contact the supplier for the information. Most of the time they give the answer for the total feet on the package. So for example a 16'4" reel or 5M will give 72AMP so if you take 72 divided by 16 feet you will end up with 4.5amp per feet. Then you can calculate 4.5 per the amount of feet of LED'S that you are using. Please see the video to help you. I hope this helps you.

    Let's say you want to power 8 x 12v - 6amps 5M / 16.4ft 5050 SMD 300 UVLED Strips on Parallel Circuit on a 12v power supple How much or how many amps should the power supply be delivering? I calculated 8 x 6amps = 48amp. 48 amps x 20% = 57.2 amps rounding up to 60amp - 720w. Power supply. Is this correct? Am I close?

      Is that 6 amps per foot? On the the package it will tell you or the supplier. It should say howuch ps per meter or total amps for a 5MM. Once you know that answer, I'll be able to guide you better.

    I’m watching this video. I think I’m four minutes into it and the music continues after your introduction. If you can please go back and ditch the music after you’ve done your intro, it’s unnecessary and it drowns you out and distracts from what you’re saying.     I need help Clem, I'm a disabled dad so the time I spend doing "jobs" is limited, need to get things right the first time.. I have 3 5M strips of 5050 (150 per) and the 2nd 5M is faded using the stock power . I planned on getting a 24V 15A that should drive four 5M runs (20 M) if my math is good, then I figure an amplifier and 1*20m 2pin cord
    , 10' 4pin female cable, US plug power cord
    1*DC power cable
    (rating unsure). How does this look Sir? Thank you so kindly, I wanted to surprise my son for Christmas, the 2 5M we got him wasn't long enough and the power inadequate for even 10M. Merry Christmas

No info on the bags or anywhere, but the seller very generously sent 4 reels extra or 20 M and 2 inline amplifiers the size of a thumb, plus a 12V 10 amp ac adapter. Clem, what's got me vexed now is I swapped out the 12V 3 amp it came with and it still had the same fade on the second 5M strand, so how will I power 3 5M strands when neither of these adapters can power 2 5M runs? Thanks Brother

      @@wyattspop I used connecters one time and I did not liked them when they first came out. So I always solder my wife to the LED'S. Maybe by now they have improved on the connectors but it left a bad taste. I want to be sure that it's solder.       The 4.5w per foot is really bright. Which you do not need it as a halo for the TV. A 1.4w per foot x 5 meter is 22.5 plus 10% so a 50W 12V is more than plenty.
