  • Video of my bike ride from Liverpool to Leeds along the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Watch as I slip and slide.......and whinge.... my way on the 127 mile route. In hindsight it would have been much better to have undertaken the ride in summer, when the towpath was dry, rather than in autumn when it was soaking after a month of rain.

    I cycled Skipton to Burnley and back yesterday. Got piss wet through on way back. Needed a final burst of energy for the Gargrave section to ride on grass.

    • @jscal2007
      @jscal2007  Před 5 lety +2

      I normally ride on the roads. Thought this would be easy because it's flat. Turned out harder than I expected because so much is on grass, and was wet and muddy.

      @@jscal2007 lots of gates around here aswell.

  • @davidcollier6520
    @davidcollier6520 Před 2 lety

    Hi John, thanks that was a very informative video delivered with refreshing honesty. Please could I ask whether there are many gates like the one 4:35 into the video? It looks like it would not take a lot to make this a perfect route and encourage a much wider take up of recreational cycling, so it's a shame there are unnecessary barriers in the way. I'd still give it a go but thank for setting my expectations - gates and muddy fields will not be a surprise!

    • @jscal2007
      @jscal2007  Před 2 lety +1

      Dave, there weren't that many gates and I figured out the technique pretty soon after that point. Stand the bike on it's back wheel and push into the gate, move the gate and back out the other side. I wouldn't let it put you off, just do it when the path is likely to be dry.

    Thanks John, great info, preparing for a LEJOG this summer with my 13 year old daughter, so this will be part of the build up ! I plan to leave the car near the start in Liverpool (?), is it a dodgy area? And we’ll then get the train back from Liverpool. Probably 2 days, hammock camping.

    • @jscal2007
      @jscal2007  Před 2 lety +1

      The start in Liverpool is in a housing estate which appeared safe to me, but we didn't stay long, so no idea of the overnight risk to your car. Good luck with LEJOG.

    Is it possible to do it in one day?

    • @jscal2007
      @jscal2007  Před 4 lety +1

      I couldn't, but if you're young and fit and feel you can ride 127 miles of paths and tracks, then yes if you do it in summer and start early enough.

    • @jscal2007
      @jscal2007  Před 3 lety +1

      Peter, I left Liverpool about 1pm and stayed at the Premier Inn in Wigan on the first night, and the Premier Inn at Gargrave on the second night. Roughly I did 30 miles on day 1, 60 on day 2, and 30 on day 3, so it took me two half days and one full day.

      @@jscal2007 cheers John.. We”re coming over from N.Ireland and want to give ourselves lots of time to look around. The Premier inn, Wigan is our first stop as well then the same in Burnley and 3rd night in Skipton. Once in Leeds we’ll jump on the train back to Liverpool for the evening ferry or the one next morning.

      @@Ben-db5re Can't remember what the hotels cost, but I'm guessing £100 by the time I'd had dinner and breakfast. Premier Inn in Wigan let me park the bike in my room and the one in Gargrave had a lock up. Didn't look for hotels around Nelson/Colne, so can't help with that.
