Beethoven's 7th is my favorite piece of music. I see the Universe when I hear it.

I know nothing about playing music but I heard this in a movie years ago and loved it but forgot about it and the movie for years till recently it jumped into my mind and I obsessed over it and looked for it on CZcams for days and I finally found it a few days ago and now I've listened to it in many different forms. The movie was "Knowing" it's at the end and to me it fits the scene perfectly but it may be because it was the first time I heard it. Its very difficult to find music with no words or anything to go on but the sounds in your vague memory.

Thank you for the overview. This was my favorite piece growing up. Though I "listened" to it many times I actually "heard" it when listening live at the local concert hall. I was back in college at the age of 40 taking music classes and at 72 it still moves me like no other orchestral piece.

Just saw the Eugene (Oregon) Symphony perform this tonight. Magnificent! I said to my friend I was with, "I wonder if someone has done a harmonic analysis of the 2nd movement." You answered my call! Thanks a lot! Exactly what I was looking for.

I can relate so strongly to this. The same thing happened to me. It got under my skin and is still under my skin. It's brooding and thrilling and frankly a little frightening to me. I've taught it to myself to hopefully purge myself of it, lol.

As just one of the 6.54 K, from across the pond : thanks for the way you share your love of music (&sound). See you soon!

Ha! I am also addicted to the piano version of this and have started learning it and was looking for other people who felt the same.

I've always loved the 7th. Especially the second movement. It's almost choral like in it's initial stages. I was inspired by Bernstein's lectures, he was so articulate and explained in such a simple way. As a student, I actually understood what on earth he was going on about. Thanks for reminding me Chris

Thank you for this. I’m just starting out with discovering Beethoven’s work, and Symphony #7 is one of the first that I’ve begun to delve into.

Last night I saw this video premiere listed and I thought, "Bernstein does an amazing talk on it!' And of course that's what you lead off with. =) It's tied with Prelude in C for "a piece that even I can play, and yet sound beautiful and masterful and give me goosebumps every time."
There's a set of cassette tapes for kids that my parents got for road trips (the 90s) that tell the history of musicians. One was "Beethoven Lives Upstairs," which begins with this movement behind narration about how Beethoven just died. The next hour tells of Beethoven's life using a fictional story. I think that was the moment I became hooked on the emotional power of classical music.

The second movement has gotten under my skin too, so I just had to find a video on it. Thanks for this! Though I didn't get it out of my ear either. :)
Totally agree on the conclusion: I once experienced the 7th live in a good concert hall played by a very good orchestra, and I was barely able to compose myself during this 2nd movement!

Repetition legitimizes! Beethoven, out of all classical composers, did this the best in my opinion

I recently did a breakbeat rework of this track as I love it so much. Not sure Beethoven would approve though.

awesome piece. huge. that opening section builds tension as well as anything ever written. its scope is so broad. perhaps a focus on the figuration that embroiders the opening chords/melody could be useful. thanks for the suggestion.

For me, this piece evokes a sense of momentus, inevitable, and noble tragedy. I think this is why it has worked so well as a cue in several movies, including X-Men: Apocalypse, where it is played during the launch of all the world's nuclear weapons, or in Mr. Holland's Opus, where the music teacher is trying to impress upon his students the tragedy of one of the world's greatest composers going deaf, while the teacher's own son is deaf and cannot share in his father's love of music.
