  • Northern Ireland's passenger trains are all operated with DMUs except the Enterprise from Belfast to Dublin. The gauge is 5 ft 3 in (1445mm). There are two classes of DMUs - both built by CAF in Spain - 3000 class & 4000 class. Both are three car sets.
Trains are seen at a variety of locations. Many thanks to the station master and staff at Belfast Central for their help in recording some of this video.

The last time I was in Northern Ireland, I travelled on one of these. Very nice.

You really couldn't have orchestrated a better opening shot than those two trains coming and going. You must have been grinning from ear to wear when that happened!

Yes the timing was perfect as was the one from the East Bridge St bridge as the two trains crossed the River Lagan but it took several hours on two different days to get the shots.

This looks really good. Do you mind if I grab a few seconds of this? I'm working on a video calling for the old routes to be reopened, I can give you a credit in the description. Thanks!

This is truly excellent and mesmerising video, excellent quality, and great camera angles. Northern Ireland Railways were a big part of my life when I lived there, travelled on every one of the lines countless times.
Have you any plans to document the beautiful Castlerock station before Translink rips up the passing loop some time this year, destroying what was a picture book station. Currently two trains pass at the station just after 6pm - those days are numbered.

wainwright3 Many thanks for your very kind comments. Unfortunately I live in Canada and am not likely to be in Northern Ireland for a while. Perhaps a local railfan could take some photographs and video.

Our South Australian & Victorian railways were mostly 5’ 3” once. The S.G has replaced a lot of those lines now between all the big cities.

@@jimcrawford5039 They are renewing the line now at Lurgan and upgrading the station i believe they want to have the journey time to Dublin cut below 2 hours and more trains ;;I think we could see a new fleet of trains soon as an Enterprize service indeed .

Because the gauge in the republic is wider than most the world so they use it so trains can cross the border
