I joined REI a few weeks ago. That gave me a $30 coupon. The Anniversary Sale is going on. The pack dropped to $139. Then I got their Mastercard. After buying anything on it somewhere other than REI they send you a $100 coupon. Took the two coupons in and bought my Flash 55. My out of pocket was $10.
Best deal ever.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, and for a long time I have used removable brains as dual- purpose food/bear bags.
I considered removing them just to save a little bit of weight, but it's a good spot to store my food so it does not get crushed, and I keep food there so I can attach it to a carabiner and paracord over a branch at night.
I now do away with the Whole Foods nylon reusable packable bag I had used for that purpose.
The lack of zipper access to the main compartment was a deal breaker for me. I went with the Gregory Paragon 58 and It was the right choice for me.
I personally love both my REI bags, and have used them on multiple trips. I have the Traverse line, both in 32 and 60, but it's interesting to see more people using the flash line.
Just got it in green. REI fitted me and set it up. Sale plus a store credit made it an incredible $100. Love this pack!

I bought the baby poop mustard rei flash 55 last Friday as soon as I woke up as it was the first day of their sale that ends the 27th. I LOVE this pack, and I personally love the color. In the sunlight I get this fluorescent two tone vibe going on. It’s a beautiful, comfortable, great value backpack. The water bottle pockets next to the big side pockets are awesome. Everything about this pack is awesome other than the materials may get holes faster, from what I’ve read rei is pretty good about their return policy and or warranty.
I love that shirt, but not everyone has a Dad bode :)
I’m just getting into hiking/backpacking. If I’m going to mostly doing day hikes or overnights for the near future, do you think the flash 55 is overkill?
If you are wanting the quality for the price and like REI stuff, also look at the Traverse 32. Its a smaller bag but has most if not all the same features. Also definitely go and try on bags, and get to know the fitting system you like as well. Honestly a 50-55 bag is good from 1-3 nights, so I would recommend going smaller, unless you have other people coming, and you just wanna put everything in one bag, then take turns carrying it.

Hi Roy. First, thanks for watching. I use mine as a day pack all the time. It is so light, and you can drop parts like the brain if you want it lighter. The trick if you do use it as a day pack is not to bring everything just because you can. If you know what I mean. I can 100% recommend this pack.
Yes. You will be happier on your hikes if you figure out how to leave stuff at home and hike with a smaller lighter pack. Most experienced hikers eventually come to realize this and stop buying packs like that shown in this video.
It is a great backpack for the price point. It isn't a Baltoro.
55L is too big for day hike and too small for backpacking. Sure, leave your bear spray, power bank, camera, stove, camping chair, clean clothes to sleep in and who knows what else behind (read UL) and it's fine.
If your bear spray is inside your backpack, you might as well leave it at home and I'm guessing you saw the giant tripod he had in the side pocket. Regarding the rest of that stuff, 55 liters is plenty of volume to pack it all, especially if it has exterior pockets which typically aren't included in the advertised volume. How comfortable it'll be depends on the bag and I've not found one yet that was actually comfortable at it's maximum load capacity, but that's as true for an overbuilt 85L hauler as it is for a 55L weekender. Now, if you're packing a 15f or 20f synthetic sleeping bag and a 2 person polyester tent and trying to get it all inside the pack with everything else, yeah, that might present some problems.
55l is more than enough for backpacking lol
in fact the only reason 40l MIGHT be too small is because bear cannisters can struggle to fit in them. no bear cannister? 40l is probably gonna cover everything you need for backpacking.

Depends. I like to bring a tent, footprint, tarp, bag, pad, Jetboil, 2 L H2O, purifier kit, first aide kit, chair, table, food, cordage, light, etc. Right at 30 lbs, but it's full.
