That's... a very unique issue to have had back then. I also never expected to hear the words "I had a balloon animal ring" in my life before, but having a bunch of little kids going rabid over not having a balloon of their own doesn't surprise me in the least.
Kids will do the darndest things, For context, I had a pretty big cabal of "weird kid" friends. Of which, there was a ringleader who would come up with games to play. This could be relatively normal kid-stuff such as "gladiators." In which two kids would wrestle on the asphalt bus loop that surrounded our playground. The winner's fate decided by the ringleader, which could range from mass stoning and execution, to picking the next fighters, to nothing. Or something stranger such as the "Well of Kickems." In which one kid went down a fireman pole and everyone would kick them as they slid down. That was it, no goal, no winner, no loser. One day, the game was something called "Nubbies." Essentially, you'd walk around squatted to the ground with your knees touching your chest as you followed the leader. We weren't allowed to talk, mind you. Which makes the following part even more insane. This started with our squad of about eight kids. But in an acute case of mass psychosis, without any prompting from our group. More would join in, marching on in a quite disciplined manner. Following us in a single file line as our gaggle of kids snaked about the playground. This would continue all fine and dandy for the longest time, until we hit the *chokepoint.* A small plastic house that could only fit two people in going single file at once. I had been doing this for a long time, recess was only a half hour and I believe we had started five or so minutes after. Suffice it to say, my legs were aching. As a direct consequence, I fell down inside that plastic house. *Not a single one of those kids stopped.* And given my place as second in line, each and every kid in my near 150 student class trampled me. Never breaking their nubbed vigil. Luckily, I fell in a bit of a corner so they couldn't step on my chest. So I got out mostly unscathed. I, of course, got up and assumed my place at the back of the line until it was time to go back in.
I did balloon animals for a bit growing up as well. Suprised myself earlier this year that I still knew how to do two doves in a heart which was fairly complicated at the time. Of course everyone still loves the flying mouse.
It's making me think of operant conditioning of crows - where people will make crow friends by giving them nuts and berries in exchange for spare change and loose jewelry. You could have had a horde of seven year old henchmen had you kept up with the demand of balloons. You gave supervillain energy before, but this?
