So how do YOUR feel about the Reality TV Iceberg? Comment below to share your thoughts about the controversial machine and unseemly moments we didn’t get to mention!
Agreed, I don't really give two shits about reality TV, I don't even give a single shit about reality TV but this iceborg was surprisingly interesting. I'm not really even sure what an iceborg is supposed to be besides the ACTUAL definition, a large chunk of ice, floating in the ocean but can anyone explain what an iceborg is supposed to be in this context??
Looking back reality tv back in the 2000s and 2010s was extremely unsafe and scary, especially bad girls club. A cast allegedly getting drugged by a local Multiple jumpings sometimes encouraged by producers Bleach being put in contact lenses Personal items being damaged and contaminated by bodily fluids Alleged sexual harassment
12:00 - I was immediately reminded of the episode in America’s Next Top Model s4 when one of the contestants received a call from home that a high school friend had died and then the next day had to do a photoshoot In A Graveyard where the girls portrayed the 7 Deadly Sins while being photographed at the bottom of an open grave … after being made aware of the situation, the producers made/had the girl who’d received the terrible news go last 🤯🤯🤯
Yep, that was Kahlen. Something similar happened during Cycle 8 with Jael (RIP), who received a phone call that her friend passed away and had to do a photoshoot involving death
@syria0110 So her friend passed away and then she too passed away?? As if the producers don't do that on purpose. On BOTH occasions it was no doubt on purpose. Producers heard about what had happened and they purposely involved death in the following shoots which is an F'd up thing to do. Seeing someone cry and be upset over the passing of a loved one is good, dramatic television to them but it's not dramatic and I don't believe it increases ratings at all. It's a cheap way to try and get ratings though.
That Japanese 1 shocked me a little more, as I'd never heard of it before. The way they opened his little room like that in front of a live audience. There were definitely a few shocking scenarios in this video though.
Yeah, it would have been especially crazy for him since he was already starting to go bananas 🍌. He's mostly nekked, sitting in a room going bonkers snd suddenly his room collapses and he's in front of an audience. That really must have made him whacky.
I'm surprised there was no mention of the Bachelor franchise where producers tell them to keep people on the show for longer even if they're not interested just because they cause drama. Or Married at First Sight where the "experts" obviously put people together who don't work just to make "interesting" TV storylines. I'd much rather see people creating a genuine bond!
I was surprised about the lack of married at first sight. I mean, I can see why people are matched for about 60% of the time, but some couples are clearly matched for drama. And that percentage, that chance, that's what maked people flock to such programs and also why some are completely and unredeemably screwed.
I think there's still one scandal deeper. One that hasn't been uncovered yet, at least in the US. In the Netherlands, it came out that jurors and production staff on the Voice sexually abused contestants for favours. Huge fallout of course, the first sentences have been made, but I just can't imagine something similair ISNT happening in other parts of the world. I mean, you've got this huge imbalance of power, new people coming into a world they don't know... I simply can't imagine this goes well everywhere else.
I KNEW Dan Spilo would be on here, and the fact that some of Kelly’s female contestants used her situation to get ahead in the game will never not be bullshit
there are some reality shows that are actually informative without losing it's entertainment value. I liked watching Pimp My Ride, but as a car enthusiast myself, i always thought the show's modifications looked gawdy and ostentatious and that's not even starting with the unnecessary mods. On the flipside, i also loved to watch Overhaulin, both shows had the same premise, take an old junker and make it awesome again. The differences came in the show's styles. Pimp My Ride focused heavily on aesthetics and the engine and underlying mechanics was never shown on-screen. Meanwhile Overhaulin, as it's name suggests, focused heavily on the rebuilding process and actually gets the professional car designer Chip Foose to be personally involved with each car. The rebuilds on the show have been praised repeatedly for their attention to detail in both the aesthetics as well as the mechanical aspects of the cars. The entertainment value for Overhaulin comes in the form of a candid camera-style prank to make the unwitting participant believe their car was either stolen or repossessed, etc. Stylistically Overhaulin focused more on muscle-cars and old-school American classic cars, while Pimp My Ride generally went for any junker.
A great iceberg indeed, i really enjoyed it a lot. Have a happy thursday afternoon, Emily, take care and God bless you. Greetings from Colombia to you as well
I noted that British versions of shows are much more docile than American versions. Like Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares- the British version is quite relaxed. Supernanny was also the same and Dogs Behaving Very Badly (British) is a lot calmer than Cesar Milan (USA)
I'm a former reality show junkie. After a while I realized it was the same thing over and over again, no matter what the show it was, and that the ones who were portrayed as the "villains" were kept on as long as possible to create the most drama. I gave up watching them about 15 years ago and I'm glad I did.
We always joke about contestants who get the "purple edit." The ones who get almost no screen time, their backstory is short if told at all compared to others, and they unsurprisingly get voted off quickly. Sometimes we will literally say "wait who is that?" when they finally do show up on screen because we've forgotten them, especially if the show does a final episode reunion.
Yep, you can always tell who was staying on the show longer than everyone else. They were the ones who got the most screen time in the first couple of episodes quickly being made into the “hero” or “villain” of the show.
I remember seeing something where two women who were competing on one season of The Bachelor ended up falling in love with each other. Don't watch reality TV much outside of Total Drama, so not sure if they developed feelings on set during filming, off-set away from the cameras, or after both were eliminated from the competition, and whether they are still together as a couple or not, but would be interesting to see if other contestants on the Bachelor/Bachelorette and similar shows developed a mutual attraction towards another contestant (highly doubt it, but still intriguing if it did).
There is one that would’ve been perfect for Tier 4, given it never aired because of how awful the premise was. Welcome to the Neighborhood. The premise? A collection of different families representing different lifestyles, ethnicities, and sexual orientations compete for the approval of a neighborhood full of conservative bigots and homophobes so they can win a house. The show barely even got a trailer out before it was investigated for violating the Fair Housing Act, and the whole thing was tossed in the bin.
you left out something pretty big about the star of ''there something about miriam'' " *Rivera was found dead in February 2019 at her apartment in Sonora, Mexico. She was deemed to have died by suicide, but her husband believed she had been murdered* "
That poor guy in Japan is like some Hunger Games shit! I cannot imagine the PTSD he still must experience. Unbelievable disregard for a fellow human being 💔
I blame MTV for starting the reality TV trend. It caused them to stop being about music videos and instead by about reality TV. A lot of cable channels which started out different instead became clones of each other, one of the reasons being reality TV.
Thats why I never watched The Hills, I'd see clips and couldn't understand if it was reality tv or not and couldn't get invested cause i was too confused
I'm ashamed to say that I used to watch a few of these shows: Pimp My Ride & Extreme Makeover Home Edition. Even worse, that Paris Hilton Show The Simple Life...
22:34 - It looks like producers may have originally intended for the show to be the stated synopsis. But after seeing some footage, they decided to repackage it.
Hey please update top 10 movie and TV child actress who left acting incluye rhiannon leigh wryn from the last Mimzy 2007 and telise galanis and molly jepson from daddy day Camp and Amanda and rachel pace twins actress and Alexys Nycole Sánchez who plays becky feder in growns up 1 and 2 please and i mean child girl actresses who fell out of the map gives
You mentioned one infamous incident involving a Japanese reality tv show, but there's another one that I feel should be mentioned too. Iirc they had their own version of Big Brother that was sued by the family of a former contestant because of events that happened during filming and while it was airing. I can't remember her name atm, but she was a popular wrestler who was made during filming to look like a horrible and unstable person despite not being like that irl, which resulted in her being harassed by viewers online and tragically resulted in her taking her life. Of course I might not be remembering everything entirely and I don't mind if anyone points out something I may have missed, but it's yet another example of some producers not giving a damn about people's well-being if it means they get more money out of it.
I was waiting for below decks verbal SH is well as the almost physical SA after a night out in saying that the producers did step in and stop it thank goodness.
I think there was a,batman comic where the Joker breaks a live broadcast by breaking on set he sprays a women in the face woth juice from hia flower she thinks shes gonna die by acid and the prodution team nevwr turns off the broadcast. In the end of the comic the Joker says who is the real monster him who tormented the people or the people for just watching and doing nothing
As I cannot stand reality tv I have never even seen one episode of any of these. However, I like watching expose type videos like this showing how bad they are
Let’s not forget the guy that gave himself an extreme lead makeover was a government official actively attempting to groom and seduce teenage boys at around 59 years old…and because of his whoopsie, dozens of men who were trying to contact teenagers to SA them all walked free. True, both the local PD and Dateline messed up pretty bad in some parts of this particular sting, none of what happened had to happen if the dude wasn’t being a PDFile and Dateline (literally) jumped the gun at what they thought would be a super juicy episode. They ended up being sued for $100 million by his sister and that was the end of TCAP!
Surprised you didn’t mention Whose Your Daddy and that one dating show with all male contestants where some weren’t gay (forgot the name, but you guys covered it in a previous video).
The only reality shows I watch are the talent competitions. I know that sometimes the most talented people are not the winner and that sometimes there are ringers thrown in the mix, but I still enjoy the fantastic talents. Most people on the shows I watch are insanely talented. I don't like the ones featuring all children because they are not mature enough to face the pitfalls of exposure the same way adults can. I don't mind a few youths being included, but I don't like the ones that are all children. Unfortunately Hollywood is not a good place for children who should be protected, but are many times exploited. It's a sad revelation that so many times people don't care about protecting children and those who are vulnerable to outside influences like people with special needs who are still children in their functional abilities.
Even then I feel bad for them. A lot of the contestants are young adults super keen to achieve their dreams. They don't think to get a lawyer to look over their contracts. The reality show owns them and their income and then, once their singing career ends in about six months, they're thrown aside and their dreams are over.
I’ve always felt sorry for Paris being labelled a dumb blonde yes it does come from well but it was no need for the harassment by the media and after all she was taken to one of them abusive behaviour or cancel whatever the crap they label them they should all be shut down and she was basically kidnapped as a child and forcibly taken to one of them without her consent and the parents just stood there
29:26 - I could tell half-way through Hilton's height that it was an act. And she made money for it. However, I doubt it was worth it because her antics supposedly cost her dad his inheritance, at least that's what I remember.
I never got into the reality tv era but I did watch Jersey Shores that was one of the funniest DA group they were that train wreck that you just couldn't look away from. 43 mins of why i'm glad i never watched 98% of these shows.

The scripted drama UnReal seems pretty accurate about what can happen behind the scenes
UnREAL was amazing and eerily accurate
Kenny and Evan def did unmoral things to Tonya on the challenge. #JusticeforTonyaCooley
Agreed, and then treated her like she was crazy. So sad

This was the plot of the fictional show UnReal. Maybe that's where you saw it?
I love to see a lot more in part 2
Such an interesting video!
TLC is a weird reality network, but good news, we still the 90 Day Universe.
TLC started out as The Learning Channel. Let that sink in.

Man, I hope that Japanese guy won the 1 million Yen ($6,700 USD).
He spent more than 1 year of his life locked away and now have lost his mind.
$6,700, that's it?? He spent a year and 3 months of his life like that and knocked a few screws loose for $6700, that's ridiculous.
The people on extreme cheapskates are not living below the poverty line they are just choosing to do those things they arent forced
Yes most of them are middle class families. They're just trying to get ahead by being resourceful.

The biggest take away from all these is that people will do anything for money and fame!

Can we get more of tier 4? For reality shows?
I haven’t watched tv in 5 years, the only thing I miss is PBS. The media sucks and they will ruin everything they sink their claws in.
You forgot talk shows, that's considered reality TV too
