2015-2017 F150: Backup Camera Diagnosis and Repair

  • In this video, I demonstrate troubleshooting the backup camera circuit on a 2016 Ford F150. It's actually a pretty simple circuit with key-on constant battery voltage, a ground, and a positive and negative video feed. The backup camera itself is relatively expensive, so checking the circuit is an important first step.
    NOTE: If a new camera is installed, the backup guide lines will not be visible until the camera is calibrated by a dealer.

    Everyone Pay Attention! *THIS* is how a proper video is done. No time wasted. No stupid background music. No useless stories. No spending 3 minutes watching screws being removed/installed. Just straightforward comprehensive explanation with good relevant views and no bullshit. Very well done. Thank you.

    my 2016 F150 had the blue screen. no broken wires. replaced the camera, still blue screen, replaced the wire harness, still blue screen. my suggestion is if you don’t see any broken wires before buying anything get contact cleaner and clean the connections and don’t forget the plug (with the yellow wires) right next to the parking brake under your dash. that was the issue with my blue screen issue. so don’t waste any money like i did lol hopefully this comment will save someone’s some time, frustration and money.

    I just repaired a 2017 using this video. The section of the harness in the tailgate had a bad ground wire. The ground wire he references in this video in the diagram. Ran a new ground wire down to the connector under the truck and camera came on. Thanks!

    Thanks for the video. I have a 2016 F150. My problem was the ground "wire"! I guess this is basically an excuse to get it serviced and pay big $$. Strange design, the black ground wire (both ends) is connected to a copper wire surrounded by an aluminum sheath. It's not really protected from moisture and/or salt. Needless to say it was broken due to corrosion. Took about 2 hours but I replaced the wire. Removing the wire harness made it easier. Hope this helps.

    I have the 2016 F150 with the larger screen that goes blue when in reverse. The warning of "Check surroundings carefully before backing up" as does the truck icon with the parking sensors. However, the predictive guidelines don't show up. I would assume those would be on the screen even if the camera goes out. Wiring all checks out, so before I buy a new $100 camera, can you tell me: would the predictive guidelines disappear if the camera quits?

    Mine gives me a camera warning but then it works perfectly in reverse. If I'm in any other gear I will have a blue screen. The only way the blue screen goes away is if I'm driving above 20 mph then everything works normally. But below 20 mph I only have the blue screen unless I'm in reverse!! • @ryans462
    @ryans462 Před 3 lety

    Great video man. What would you think the problem would be if the video feed isn’t going through at all? Basically I throw it in reverse and nothing happens to the screen. It’s as if it doesn’t even recognize it. I checked with a voltmeter for power at the camera with some wire (super beginner) and didn’t appear to be getting power back there from any of those tiny holes. Even when clicked in reverse with parking break on. My thinking is that the computer was reset somehow when I had a bad battery and it thinks I don’t have one. Battery us since been replaced but with same issue. If there was a break in a wire, like in your case, I guess it would at least give me a blue or black screen, but When in reverse it’s business as usual as if I’m driving forward normally. Any ideas?

    • @MasterJacks
      @MasterJacks  Před 3 lety

      If the camera wasn't programmed to the computer, you'd still get video, but the predictive guidelines wouldn't work. I would check behind that spare for broken wires. It's pretty common. It may be you have more than no power supply, maybe broken video feeds. Also check to see if you get reverse lights

    • @ryans462
      @ryans462 Před 3 lety

      @@MasterJacks thank you! I finally got around to checking the wiring around the spare tire and everything appears to be just fine. Reverse lights are also working. Anything else you can think of? I imagine taking it to a shop will be somewhat costly which is why I thought about just upgrading the entertainment center to a bigger screen with apple car play. Still think it’s not computer related?

    • @MasterJacks
      @MasterJacks  Před 3 lety

      @@ryans462 have you checked the fuse yet? If your wires look good and you have a good fuse, you're probably in for deeper diagnosis, ie. jumping power to the camera, pulling the head unit, checking for signal, tracing wires, etc. If the new system you install utilizes the stock camera, you could be in a similar situation. Might be worth paying someone to diagnose... Wish I was more help, best of luck my friend!

    My camera on my 16 randomly stops working. I noticed that in the mornings when it's cool outside the camera functions without issue, however in the evening when the temperature goes up it stops working. It works 50/50, you have any idea what the deal is? Fuze looks fine, wires look good. Not sure where to go on this....

    • @MasterJacks
      @MasterJacks  Před 4 lety

      I'd start by doing a wiggle test of the wiring back by the spare tire, see if messing with the wires makes it go on or off. Also, play with gear selector position to see if it makes a difference. My guess is a bad/corroded wire somewhere that has increased resistance when hot. 🤷‍♂️

    • @MasterJacks
      @MasterJacks  Před 4 lety

      Then it's either a bad camera or no signal from the head unit. If the head unit changes screens when you shift into reverse, it's trying to activate the camera. If you're not getting video, the camera is either not getting the signal or camera itself is bad.

    Excellent video! question for you. my issue is that when I put the truck into reverse, it is taking longer for the screen to pop up and show video. I feel like this might happen once the temperatures get colder outside. I am in Idaho right now. The camera is working, but it just takes too long to show the video when I put in reverse. sometimes I am waiting 30 seconds or more. very annoying. Do you know what might be causing this? 2017 F150 and I replaced the camera just two years ago with an OEM camera for the tailgate that connects to my rearview mirror display. thanks for your help.

    • @kenwasserman4752

      actually, yes, I had some luck. So yesterday a friend told me to try unhooking the battery from the truck for 30 minutes by disconnecting the positive terminal of the battery. he compared this to restarting a computer that is acting up. he said since there is no on and off switch for the backup camera, this was the only way to do a fresh reboot of it. so I did this, and it seemed to fix the issue right away. as soon as I put the truck in reverse, the backup camera displayed right away. now this may be just a coincidence, but after 48 hours, it is still working. I'd be interested in knowing if this works out for your situation as well. let me know. thanks.@@poohbear105
