The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals and The Dancing Plague might appear to be vastly different productions, but on closer inspection, there are similarities to be found. Both of these works explore the idea of the human body being controlled by forces beyond its own will.
The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals is a musical comedy about a town that is taken over by an alien entity that forces everyone to sing and dance against their will. Meanwhile, The Dancing Plague is based on a bizarre historical event that occurred in France in the 16th century where a group of people were struck by a strange affliction that compelled them to dance for days on end, sometimes even to the point of exhaustion or death.
Despite their differences in genre and tone, one of the key similarities between these two works is the concept of involuntary physical movement. In The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, the characters are aware of their own singing and dancing, but they have no control over it. The same is true for the historical victims of The Dancing Plague. They were aware of what they were doing, but they could not stop themselves.
Another similarity between these two productions is the idea of an external force taking control of individuals' actions. In The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, the alien entity is responsible for the singing and dancing, while in The Dancing Plague, many people believed that the victims were possessed by demons or witches. In both cases, the individuals affected were not in control of their own bodies.
Furthermore, both productions deal with the consequences of their characters’ actions. In The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, the characters’ singing and dancing leads to disastrous consequences for the town. Similarly, in The Dancing Plague, the afflicted individuals’ uncontrolled dance ultimately leads to their physical and mental breakdown.
In conclusion, although The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals and The Dancing Plague may appear different outwardly, both works explore the influence of outside forces on the human body and the consequences of losing control. The involuntary physical movement, the external control and the consequences of their characters’ actions are just a few of the many similarities that bind these two productions together.
