  • Let's take a good look at quitting. Because it's nicer than you think.
In this video I talk about why I love quitting things and what things I have quit recently.

Great topic! You are such an inspiration for me returning to sax over 50. I've been considering eventually returning to the violin. This video was very timely for me. I am currently in that place where I am recovering from burn out. I enjoy doing quite a few things and I am constantly reassessing my life...trying to determine what I need to drop. I am finding that I may not necessarily need to drop the things that bring me so much joy but determine how or how often I need to show up for my viewers. Staying on a strict daily...weekly upload schedule just wears me out and it takes the joy out of what I do...constantly having to meet the demands of the algorithms. Creativity takes a lot of energy. So, I am focusing on showing up as I feel energized to do so. I'm very hopeful that I will have help to show up more consistently. However, my overall health is and will always be my top priority. 💖

That is so nice to hear, thank you! 😘🧡 And I'm happy to hear this video came out at a good time for you. You are absolutely right in that your health and energy always comes first. I take regular breaks from practice and making videos as well, they are just very much needed. Good luck with your projects! ✨

Thank you. Sometimes we need a reminder that it’s ok to stop doing, clear out, simplify in order to make more room for the things that we love.

As a fellow adult learner I really appreciate your videos. Very inspiring . I’ve been playing violin for about 6years and i’ve just taken up the viola too. I’m curious do you still play viola?😊

Thanks for this video! I've been taking a break from my dulcimer this year because it's felt more stressful than fun recently. But I'm booked for a farmers market next month, so it's time to get back!

Glad to hear you like it! Taking breaks is very important, even from the things you enjoy. We even improve during breaks, our brain keeps on processing what we learned during practice. 🙂 And good luck with your performance, it sounds really exciting! 😀✨

Thank you! i really think that is healthy to quit some things. Many months ago i got my uni degree and in the process of getting a job, the degree, personal and family time i didn't have time for the things that i liked. I was trying to learn the viola and violin, i like them both very much but i'm almost sure i have to quit one, or maybe just get a 5 string to have a much stable practice and sell the other two. This video came just in time for me!
Wish you luck in your practice and lessons, and i'll keep tuned for the strings collab :D

I'm happy to hear my video was helpful to you! 😊 I'm still considering the viola as well, but maybe I should just dust off my 5-string and play it more. 😅

Congratulations! I've also decided to quit playing the cello. While I enjoyed it, after a year or so... I realized that it no longer fits into my current lifestyle. I initially started playing the cello as a child, so there were some lingering emotions I needed to address. However, when I revisited it as an adult and had the freedom to choose my own time, I realized that my motivation was mostly driven by nostalgia rather than true passion. Consequently, I made the decision to quit, and I'm genuinely content with how this experience unfolded.

That sounds really valuable! Sometimes you re-explore something, to find out it's not for you anymore, amost like getting true closure from it. But that creates room for new things. 🙂

For me, cello has the best sound of all.. It is subjective, ok.. I play trumpet, sax, flute, and started violin.. But already I know, I like cello more.. Violin is too high, cello sounds me best, after piano, biggest range.. So why I started violin? From practical reasons.. To carry, price ( in same range).. Etc.. Violin is simply too high..
BTW. That quitting, if you will live longer, realize, that quiting is an obvious thing, as well as adaptation.. I do not know why, I thing that this your quiting is connected with some real persom(?). That is not only quiting, but also changing (hair).. 😉
Thank you for your videos, as a total beginner (in violin playing) , is an inspiration for me.. 👍

I’ve been a professional musician for over 40 years, honestly I get much better results with taking a break from playing music. As I’m a multi-instrumentalist with strings, I’ve found that things like playing standup bass isn’t the best for my dexterity on the violin and guitar. So I only practice standup bass when I have gigs booked for playing bass.

Taking breaks indeed helps! It's called "post practice improvement". Your brain is processing everything you did during practice, after practice. 😁 And interesting to know! I noticed that my fingers got stronger when I played cello, and I feel like I have more bow control now.

It's really fun, isn't it? And that makes sense, in the end you can only keep up seriously with one or two. Piano is beautiful! I played piano for a few months before my violin adventure started, and I played mandolin for 3 days (2 years ago or so) and quickly realized it wasn't for me. 😅 Good luck with your musical adventures!

Patreon can work if you really deliver quality and quantity. You need to become really quite professional not just in what you do (music, or whatever the person's specialty is) but also having good ideas, establish an interesting niche profile, writing good scripts and good execution on the video part. Your videos are more vlog-type, 'home' video category and not very mature, if you compare it to some bigger creators. The channels I witnessed to grow usually worked anywhere from 5 to 10 years to become relatively big, if at all - not everyone becomes successful, in fact probably the vast majority of youtubers never do.
Do this because you love it, and maybe at some point it will become big enough to make a living out of it, or at least complement the income a bit. Having an established stream of income can come but it requires at least a couple good, well-performing videos a week so there's a well established regularity people can trust, and there's (probably) no (actually useful) book of how to become successful content creator, so it's learning while doing but it can be a lot of work.
In the meantime do what you like to do, if you like youtube you will have some good ideas, some less good and you will learn year by year - if you stick to it and don't make too long breaks in the videos :) it may help to establish specific series, it saves you having to get a completely new idea for every video and also provides stability for the channel, for example some people may specifically enjoy listening to your performances and if they know they will have one regularly they may come back. Because you can't learn something new every other week, maybe sometimes you work on longer pieces, a weekly, series that shows current progress, what methods are you using to practice certain parts of the piece etc. could also be interesting to other learners.
'Lifestyle' vlogs are also nice but something that doesn't stand so well by itself maybe, more like a regular filler with what you did and what you're planning to do.
I have no idea what I'm talking about as I don't have a channel, just displaying some random thought process on figuring out how to establish identity and consistency to the channel. I believe there can be great satisfaction in youtube as well but it's a lot of hard work.
Best of luck! I follow you as I am an adult beginner myself (a pity I'm losing my teacher at the moment but anyway will see what the future brings).

@@MarijkeViolin I hope you get the urge to scratch that itch, and get back to the viola. 👍BTW: I play 19 instruments (brass, woodwind, strings and percussion), and I don’t consider any of them causing "clutter." In fact, my "brain thing" is to continually enjoy playing all my musical instruments - just not all at the same time. 😉 As a sidebar: Can you imagine what the world would look like today if the Allies quit World War II? 🤔 We can all take a lesson from Vince Lombardi, “Winners never quit, and quitters never win.” 😏
