    Your help is much appreciated.

    • @ClockswithSeth
      @ClockswithSeth Před 3 lety +3

      Hi Sarah, thank you! There can be difference if the weights don't have enough length or room to drop for the cuckoo call as you set the time. Then you'll end up having to raise the weights before continuing, allowing it to finish the call. It wouldn't be good to advance it without it finishing the call. But, if you still have plenty of room for your weights to drop as you advance the hand it's perfectly fine.

    It looks like I have the exact same clock that you were using in your video. An eight day clock with two big heavy weights. How high do I need to keep the clock off the ground in order for the weights or chain not to hit the ground

    • @ClockswithSeth
      @ClockswithSeth Před 3 lety

      That is a great question! I actually recommend hanging the clock as high as you can with still being able to reach the hands on your dial. That way if you need to set the time again you can reach it with out needing a step stool. Your weights might still touch the ground depending on your height but not for several days since it's an 8 day. They drop a lot slower than the 1 day cuckoo like mine in the video. I have another cuckoo that I hung too high and actually rarely run it because it's out of my reach. I need to lower it so I can enjoy it again. I hope this helps!

    I have found that as a collector who has had my collection from sea level to 8,ooo feet above, altitude can affect the clocks. In my experience, I usually had to speed them up at higher elevations, and slow them down at lower elevations. I know, that sounded weird to me too. Also, when moving long distances, I would recommend clamping the bellows gently down.

      @@ClockswithSeth At 8000 feet above sea level acceleration due to gravity (g) is 9.79914 m/s^2, and at sea level it is 9.80665 m/s^2. That's only a difference of 0.077%. That seems really small, maybe through many very slightly slower swings a difference adds up?
      For a simple pendulum the period is proportional to 1/sqrt(g)
      So over a single day, all else being equal (so ignoring air pressure differences) then just due to gravity a pendulum clock would run 33.09 seconds slower over a day at 8000 ft compared to at sea level, after a month that would be a drift of 17 minutes slower.

      @ClockswithSeth Před 2 lety

      Hi, if the pendulum swings only a couple seconds first try tilting it on the wall to the left and then right. Does it run any better in a tilted position? If so there is an adjustment you can do the pendulum leader wire. Check out this video and start at about 3 minutes: czcams.com/video/CUwAmuw13TU/video.html
      Another thing could be that a chain has come off its ratchet wheel and is caught. Can you look with a flashlight and see if it's come off? It's a little tricky on the smaller cuckoo clocks. The following video shows how to put one back on with the movement removed from the case, start at about 9:45. czcams.com/video/mESykVJpHRw/video.html

      Hi Michael, the easiest way is to take down a picture you have hanging and use it's nail or screw (make sure it's sturdy) to temporarily mount your cuckoo and try it out. Make sure the clock is level and the chains aren't tangled. Then set your weights on the chain hangers and pendulum on the wire loop. Gently start the pendulum and see if it will run and cuckoo at the top and bottom of the hour, and play music if it has that feature. You'll find out fast if it's going to work.

    • @ClockswithSeth
      @ClockswithSeth Před rokem

      It's possible the clock is out of beat. Try tilting it to the right a little and see if it runs better, and then try the left. There is a little crutch wire that will need to be bent slightly to help it run at a level position. Typically it just needs a very slight bend. Here's a video by one of my friends putting one in beat with the movement out of the clock. You can do it with the movement inside the clock. czcams.com/video/CUwAmuw13TU/video.html

    • @ClockswithSeth
      @ClockswithSeth Před 2 lety

      Hi, sorry for my delayed response. You can hang it and use a level underneath to make sure it's level before adding the weights and pendulum on. If it still stops running try tilting the clock just slightly to the right or left. It looks weird but if it runs better at one of these positions rather than being level then your clock is out of beat. To fix this I recommend this article below which goes into detail about how you can do it yourself. Best of luck! www.bavarianclockworks.com/blog/diy-cuckoo-clock-repair-guide/

      Sounds like your chain has come off the rachet wheel. You’ll need to open the back and check. If it’s off it needs to be put back on and can be tricky. If you remove bellows, hands and disconnect the cuckoo bird there’s only 4 screws holding the movement in, pulling it out would make it easier to do.

    What if the cuckoo is not aligned with the time? It cuckoos 12 times at 4 pm or 11 times at 8 the cuckoo and time no longer are synchronized.

      Hi Mike! You can safely move the hour hand to match number of cuckoo calls. It's a friction fit and should just take a little bit of pressure.

      This is an easy fix. Move the hour hand, the shorter hand back 2 hours. It's just a friction fit. Never move the minute hand backwards though. Hope this helps!

      Yes. You probably have a battery powered cuckoo.

    How can I stop the coo-coo clock from playing? 1:07 1:09

      @@dryanvocal If you don’t want to hear the cuckoo call remove the weight that lowers during the call and set it aside. It should still keep time.

    Hi why my cuckoo clock does not cuckoo. Thanks

      Sorry for the late reply. It could be a number of things. The best way to find out is to open up the back and check the bellow tops and lift wires. The paper or leather gets holes from wear and sometimes the lift wires get disconnected.

    Oops. Just brought a cuckoo clock at an estate sale and am scared I moved it wrong. Just took it off the wall and put it in the car. Yikes. I didn't even know the topper came off and it fell and the bird snapped off 😭 hoping I can fix it with some wood glue

      Hi Emily, sorry about your bird snapping off the top. I've had one fall off the wall before, it's scary. Yes, wood glue works wonders. Sometimes after it's done, you can't even tell it broke.

    Sorry, but this information is not complete or accurate. For moving and hanging a small 1day clock, this video is fine. However, for large, older clocks with heavy weights several things must be considered. First, do not pack the weight in the same box as the clock: large weights can add up to 10 lbs in weight and can damage the carving on the clock if they shift or the box is juggled in any sort of sudden motion. Second, placing the twist tie through the chains should be very close to the base of the clock to prevent the chains from slipping from the gears - if done correctly, you won’t need to worry about chains slipping. Third, and most importantly for large clocks with heavy weights, the nail from which your clock will hang should be placed at an acute upward angle from the wall. In older homes with plaster walls, you can hang the clock anywhere, but it is always best to place the nail into a beam for added support. In newer homes with plasterboard walls, locating a beam is of utmost importance. Also, using a plastic screw/nail cover will add security for your clock. Again, the angle of the screw/nail is IMPORTANT. After hanging the clock and placing the pendulum and weights, start the pendulum with a gentle push and LISTEN for an even tic-toc - adjust the clock by shifting it slightly left or right until the beat is even. Good luck with your cuckoo clock!
