  • As morticians we get asked about the condition of crime/accident victims bodies...
    "Are they viewable?"
"How would we handle this case?"
"What would the body look like?"
Kari the Mortician, Ryan & Brian from Undertaking the Podcast, and professor John Hill will answer those questions and many more. In each episode several embalmers/morticians will talk about criminal cases of murder and unexplained deaths and how they would handle the deceased victims from those cases.
In this episode, Kari, Ryan, and John will be discussing the autopsy reports newly released on the accidental death of Kobe Bryant. Weigh in by commenting below!
Many people have looked at the aspects of the case, but we will discuss caring for the victim and the sad task that laid before the funeral directors who cared for them.
Warning things may be discussed that are disturbing to some people. We do not show photos from the case but many are available if you google the victim's name.

Yes. Poof they are gone. My beautiful 19 year old son was t-boned by a semi truck going 75 miles an hour at a poorly designed intersection. His Volkswagen Jetta immediately burst into flames. Before his service I got to lay on top of his contorted body in a body bag. I remember the funeral home was so hopeful I would get to at least see his hand or his foot or something….but no. I can’t even describe how much that sweet kid means to me. I called him my best boy in the world. When I heard of this accident with Kobe Bryant and his gorgeous daughter and others…..I instantly thought I can relate somewhat as to what is going on in relation to how horrific the injuries must be to the bodies. I have an unbelievable amount of respect and gratitude for everyone who works in the funeral industry in any capacity because you help us all at the most devastating time of our lives. Thank you so very much to you all. Paolo Antonio Siciliano 7-1-1998 / 7-7-2017 He really was the best boy in the world to me and I miss him with my whole heart and soul. His obituary is still on line I think on Legacy…..I can’t help but still be such the proud mom. Man I miss that kiddo.

Way back, many years ago. On the month I was born. My dad was killed in a motorcycle accident. He was thrown from the machine and hit by oncoming traffic. He was only 23 years old. By the expertise of the funeral home, my mom was able to have an open casket at his wake and funeral. It was very important to her. She said he was a little bruised and you could see a little swelling on his face, but she was so relieved that she could see him. What you guys do is SO important. I have heard from both of my grandma’s that this literally kept my mom alive after his death. So, thank you for what you do💖

Kobe's body was in pieces, his brain was separated from his head. His body from the from his waist down was torn away from him. The autopsy is pretty graphic so I'll just let the video tell the rest, but death was instantaneous for all involved. I'm a Retired Nurse who worked in the ED and My Husband was a Police Officer in LA. I honestly don't believe they knew what hit them ( for a better lack of words ) I feel that it was all over very quickly and there was no time to register what was happening. My Husband was murdered six years ago so I understand sudden and tragic loss. I'm sure hospital personnel reassured them that it was painless for all involved. Rest in peace to all that have been loss to us.❤️💔❤️

I've had my share of helicopter & plane crash cases. I've learned to respect the needs & wishes of families. In these cases, I knew there would be a media circus & the family's privacy would be crucial. With social media being an area of concern lately, only certain key employees would be allowed to be around high profile decedents. Cell phones would need to be surrendered & any use of cameras would be authorized & monitored only by families. Images today can be easily leaked & all steps are taken to keep this from happening. Celebrities families are made aware of how gravesites & crypts can be desecrated by fans & wrong doers looking for attention, so some interments are made a secret. Great subject.

Hi Kari....My first husband died in an awful truck accident. He burnt so badly, he had no ears, eyes, fingers, hair. The only patch of skin was on the inside of his left knee, he was in a fetal position. My children & I had no closure. I wasn't allowed to see him, pictures or his truck. I found the junk yard & within
mins. I found his truck, not much left of that either.
I did bury his body, the funeral director said he had to preserve him & wrapped him. I also had to buy a casket that sealed.
My question is do you have any idea how they could preserve him?? It was such a blur at the time 1987....I may have done some things differently but I'm not sure?
I just wish our kids & I had closure. Could there have be closure? They did have to identify him thru dental records.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for you taking the time to explain everything you do & to answer questions.
    Many Blessings, Phoebe

I'm so sorry to you and your children. I don't think you should burden yourself, thinking about what you may have done differently. How can any loving family even begin to cope w/such a tragedy to think about anything else but the loss of their loved one, let alone have the presence of mind to arrange for your loved one's funeral.
It's only human nature to wish you could have done more. I think you showed incredible strength to show such concern for your husband's remains and to face seeing the wreckage of your husband's vehicle.
I think if your husband read your comments, he would not want you to carry this burden. He would see how much you loved him and would want you and your children to cherish his memory and have peace in your life.
He'd be so proud you have taken such good care of your children as a loving mother and his loving wife. I wish you and your children peace. 💓🌺May your beloved husband RIP.🌹❤

I'm not a basketball fan, but it still saddens me when anyone dies like this whether it be a major star or an ordinary person like me. I give all of you credit for being able to do what you do. I've always been curious as to what Funeral Directors/Embalmers did in their occupation. Some people don't understand how much goes into preparing a loved one for burial. My door was always open for him to come back into my life but he never did! I chose not to go to the funeral home or to the funeral because I don't think for one minute he would have wanted me there! I grew up in San Diego and was dating this guy his sister found body parts in her pool she lived close to the freeway and she was really bad they had to take her to the E.R and she was never the same after that they moved out of state that's how bad it affected her mental health when this happened I believe she was in her late 40. They crashed into a mountain off las virgenes road in calabasas only 20 min drive on the freeway from where I live now . I was on las virgenes road last week with my brother running some errands it gave me chills knowing that those hills/mountains above the road were where Kobe and 8 others took their last breath . Might hike up there to see the crash site and also see the memorial fans made for them on the site .

There is actually footage of the accident scene _before_ the bodies were removed. IIRC it was filmed by a news chopper that did not immediately recognize that the deceased were still on scene. Eventually they DO realize, and you can see that moment of recognition for the camera operator in the way he responded with his equipment, i.e sudden jerky movement and sloppy fast zoom out. The damage to the bodies was so severe that it made them difficult to distinguish from mechanical debris-especially from the air. Because this clip is so easily accessible and plainly identified I feel like it was likely being livestreamed by news media which is often the case. Once it was understood that remains were still on scene obviously the stream was ended and then removed. But as they say, the internet is forever.
I know there was discussion in a comment thread of a re-upload of the stream (either reddit or YT) where users were comparing the footage before the remains were noticed to the footage after the remains were covered by blue tarps to identify/plot human remains on the original footage.

I visit cemeteries as well Ryan! Although, mostly local here in Utah. A lot of Pioneer history. I would love to someday, go to St. Louis, and track down the gravesite, of my Great great grandfathers sister, who died when she was thirteen, and beloved of my greasy grandfather, he never got over her death, and he became a drinker. He spent a lot of time in jail, and many years later he took his own life. He is buried here in the Salt Lake City, Cemetery. Despite his struggles he became a successful horticulturist and he and his father were responsible for planting all the trees around the City and County Bldg. In Downtown SLC, and if I’m correct, most of the trees in Liberty Park. In SLC as well. However, Mental illness was apart of his life, and alcoholism played a major role. He NEVER GOT OVER, the death of his beloved sister, Mary Ann.
Which brings me back to my desire to find where she is buried, in St. Louis. I feel a VERY STRONG KINSHIP, to MaryAnn. The reasons around her death, aren’t exactly clear in our Family History/Genealogy. We have a few pictures of MaryAnn, where she looks like she may have had some sort of disability. In one picture, of her together with Joseph Hyrum, my great grand father, (or maybe I’ve already said great, great. (Sorry) it appears that he, may be holding her head up. Mary Ann appears to have had a larger than normal head. It has been our hypothesis, that perhaps she had developed Hydrocephalus. Which was untreatable in those days. (I was born with hydrocephalus, and they were just learning how to treat it back when I was born. I’m not sure what her disability was, but I have my theories based on my own very complicated history.
I also believe her grave is not in it’s original place, berthed cemetery may have been moved(???) so I really need to do some serious research before hitting the ground. I believe I have a cousin living in the area, who could provide me with some of the info.
(So sorry this was such a LONG POST, about nothing related to the topic, but I picked up on Ryan’s comment about visiting cemeteries, and RAN WITH IT!
RIP KOBE, Gianna, and all the other beautiful people who lost their lives in such a horrible way. ❤

I got to give it to you morticians because it sounds like you care about what you do and unfortunately there are a lot who don’t. When my wife passed away because of heart issues, she was taken to a mortuary here in San Antonio and relative said they did not do her justice. I could not gaze my eyes upon her because of that she was not only a beautiful woman, but she was a beautiful soul, we were married 25 years. I think now that I have a son and a daughter from her, losing them would be the cause of my demise. I don’t know how you guys do it, but losing a child I think it’s the hardest thing a parent could ever go through trying to restore a child, I don’t see how y’all do it, and keep a sane mind. God bless you guys for the job. Well done that you do.

It was upsetting but, MAYBE it was how she wished her funeral to go. She was also wearing the cutest pink jammies with little monkey faces all over. As long as her wishes were honored, I can look past the shock of her appearance.

Addressing Mr. Paul H below, what is wrong with a mortician wearing a muscle shirt on his day off and participating in a podcast? Funeral directors, embalmers and undertakers in general are real people who have real lives. Do I think a muscle shirt would be appropriate during a funeral or meeting with a family, no but these people should be allowed to be themselves and let their hair down on their days off. These people deal with death daily and the pressure does get to some. When they get off work and go home they still answer the phone anytime of night when called, sometimes multiple times during the night so give these guys a break.

    • @rucianapollard7098

I kinda see your point, but I lean towards the commenter who said the muscle shirt was inappropriate. This guy is a funeral director and that title carries a lot of weight. I don't think he needed to wear a suit and tie, but a nice button down shirt would have been nice, or even a polo shirt would have been better than the muscle shirt. I appreciate all of the hard work that funeral directors and their staff do.

Also, he mentioned that the grave was very elaborate. Kobe and his daughter were entombed in a mausoleum. It is not marked, so no one can visit it, or someone might see it, but not know that Kobe and his daughter are buried there. There is a grave sight in the same cemetery that people have speculated was Kobe's final resting place, but a family came forward to say that it was their daughter's grave, and it had been there before Kobe passed away.

Like airplane wings helicopters can slow their decent with what is called auto-rotation, however, they believe the pilot of Kobe's aircraft was suffering from what is called spatial disorientation and thought he was climbing up to get above the fog layer so was still giving the helicopter full power but unbeknownst to him he was going down in a spiral decent so the occupants were more substantially injured by the increasing speed of the aircraft at impact. RIP everyone on board.

I can't imagine how confusing that moment had to be for the pilot

As far as them being aware that they were going to crash, because of the fog, the pilot didn't even know what was happening. The fog was too thick. So I don't think they had any idea, thank God. 😢
