    Rittenhouse is a situation that really challenges people's objectivity. As an attorney, I can say there's no jurisdiction I'm aware of where this verdict wouldn't be legally correct, and all my attorney colleagues agree. FTR, we are 'coastal elites' and the majority of us are politically progressive. There are some who think there should be some other crime for him to be charged with, and we can agree that we don't want to incentivize vigilantism, but ultimately you can't just make up laws that don't exist at the time of the alleged offense. If you're progressive & you would've locked up Rittenhouse, it's time to take a breather

    • @dw620
      @dw620 Před 2 lety +40

      Good luck arguing against vigilantism when the only vigilantes were those trying to stop Kyle from handing himself into the police (visible on camera) after the first shooting, not least Gaige who was explicitly told that...
      The fact that they misheard this as "working for the police" before deciding to attack Kyle makes support for Gaige even more incomprehensible.

      I would like to challenge you on this being Vigilantism by saying this:
      Kyle was not enacting amy version of 'justice' on anyone for arson,violence,etc. He quite literally just had to defend himself.
      By analyzing what Vigilantism actually is, I'd argue the people trying to stop him from turning himself to the police (by attempting to kill or maim) are a more fitting example.

    Something else has to happen? If the police enforced the law at protests, they would not become riots. It is that simple. Mayors and Governors who restrict the police from doing their jobs AND have their prosecutors decline to charge IS the problem. They want the riots, it is politically advantageous to have their citizens blame racism, etc., than have to explain why 60 years of policy has failed.

Like I don’t think there is a need to wholly revamp the constitution or anything. I think the basics of our system are fine. But there’s a lot that’s wrong. And I don’t believe the “entire system is systemically raclst”. But this has been going on for quite a while. And more so since 2015/2016. I mean, look at the degeneration of the “Russiagate” narrative, not that I’m a Trump supporter, but I am a supporter of reality, even if a crappy person like Trump is involved. And now, we see slowly, after Biden wins, a lot of “correction” has come. “Correction” that half the people who need to, will never see. And we can see how disingenuous and manipulative our political and media system are.

    @9:16 Exactly, what you are describing here is ideological possession. The reason this happens is because when we out grew myths and gods as our sacred value, it left a vacuum. Now that vacuum is filled and our identity becomes consumed by our ideology, or these tools you are pointing at. When people allow their identity to be consumed by any of these things, they then begin to feel like they are being attacked when these tools are attacked.
    A good example supporting this is how the god of the gaps argument has taken a new form in the racism of the gaps arguments that we are now seeing.
    People need to remember that they are not these tools and that they are just there to help us understand the world. We shouldn't be emotionally attached to any of these tools or we can never develop them because to develop them you have to attack, poke holes and challenge them. And if someone's identity is infused with the tool they will not let that developmental process continue.

    The prosecution attempted to throw the kitchen sink in this regard after both sides rested. The judge granted some, but not others. The standard was that the state had to argue a legitimate reason why the jury might acquit on the greater charge, but would still be able to convict on the lesser. In some cases their arguments didn't make the most sense, such as trying to include Unintentional Homicide under Intentional Homicide, since the defense hasn't argued that Rittenhouse's actions were not intentional

Everything he said to the prosecution indicated that he would let all their BS through, but there would be consequences. The prosecution were happy to let him so they could tell the media the judge was at fault, which thankfully the jury settled anyway.

Sam just attempts to appear “reasonable” when he knows he’s got an uphill battle. He is less stupid than disingenuous. Personally, I’m not fond of the terms “reasonable” and “unreasonable” as it’s applied to law, in a post modern environment which wholly confuses reality.

    And yes, you can protect property in many states. The way I look at it, ideally, or what it should be, threat to person, livelihood or necessary domain and property. That which is not easily or equally replaced. So like if someone was stealing your puppy, you can get another dog, but it won’t be that particular dog, that is irreplaceable. Or if you lose your house, which you can’t just replace necessarily. Or something that would destroy your livelihood, which can be argued would destroy your actual life, like a small, mostly uninsured business.

    Why were there so many super opinionated people on this topic if they knew literally zero about what happened?
