This video was exactly what I needed! I have an SU-V505 displaying an almost identical problem. A quick spray of contact cleaner (well, WD-40) in all the selector switches and a few toggles and it's back to working perfectly. Thanks so much!

I've serviced plenty of these and they're a great amp. I have its big brother, the SU-V707 (90 watts per channel) on my bench at the moment. Discrete output stage, a real beast. The solution to your broken actuator strip is to find a donor amp for parts - you won't find a new replacement part. Take the whole switch / strip / front panel shaft unit out as one assembly and replace it. Don't try to dismantle the strip from the switch, it won't end well. Trust me on this!

Thanks. Yes found a parts from a scrap amp. I also have the SuV7 which too is a nice sounding amp.

I broke the same cable whilst repairing an SU-V4. The cable had seized and the cog was slipping, even taking care I managed to snap the ribbon. Nasty design

Bargain find. Can't believe the size of that Selenium rectifier in the middle 😁

Love your way of troubleshooting. Accidents like that broken switch happen. Hopefuly you can find a replacement. :)

Great video! Pity about the switch,.. it happens sometimes.
Perhaps you could do a small modification with a different switch mounted behind the front panel, while running 'jumber' cables from the inactive switch?
Just a thought! Keep up the great work Simon.

Thanks for the video of Technics SU. Have a SU-V505 vith problem of the bias reg of R channel only 0 volt bias and bad sound on that channel. Mabye a transistor in the output stage went down. Have you any experense of that? Havent got so fine instrument that you have only a fluke voltmeter. Can you give me a hint if you have any answer should I be greatful. Tord L from Sweden.

Nice work, maybe with a drip of 2k epoxy resin the speaker selector switch can be repaired? Thanks for sharing.

Master Franco Unfortunately it's the metal track that's fractured. Only viable fix is to replace.

That's a beautiful amplifier... I have one in silver... Actually I have the cassette deck, tuner, graphic equaliser and an early model Technics CD player... The graphic equaliser gives the amplifier a substantial boost in volume and if I go passed 3 on the volume control... My neighbors complain lol... I know very well that the graphic equaliser don't make the amplifier output more power but there's something about turning the volume control up to 3 and looking at the volume control and thinking..... There's still a fair bit to go before I get to 10 LoL... I don't know.... It's a mental thing I guess. Not that I will ever go that far, but it's nice knowing that I can if I want to but I don't LoL...
Anyway.... Great video on a very nice nice amplifier... Did you end up getting accurate output power figures???? I'm also wondering how much difference there is between the 303 and the 505 on the inside??? Are they similar with higher voltage power supply being the only difference??? Maybe you might consider doing a video comparison and pointing out the differences on the schematics????
Just an idea if you are interested... I'm curious to know...

Maybe a bowden cable as used in RC planes is usable.

    • @SoddingaboutSi
      @SoddingaboutSi  Před 6 lety

+pa4tim The problem is at the control end.
They are available but cost more than I paid for the Amp!

I doubt you will find them. I would replace them with binding posts so you can use good quality wire.

Got the same problem, have you found a fix? Mine seems to do that when it's playing and there is a shock on the table it stands on.
Also had the problem with the left channel not working. That seems to be going better now. In any case I know how to fix that now :)
