For any European that wants to try an okay Umeshu, get the Choya umeshu (widely available in Germany). Its nothing fancy but its fairly cheap and a good representation of what proper umeshu can taste like. Btw, if you like Saké but want to try something similar but a bit smoother, try to find an nigori Sake. Its a sake where they have left a piece of the rice leftovers in the saké. It gives it a very smooth and milk-like attitude. Really nice imo.
Umeshu is a drink made from a native japanese fruit that can best be described as a plum. Its quite sweet and should be thought of as a dessert wine. Served chilled and prefferably with a piece of ice in it. Thats the best way to enjoy most lower tier Umeshu's imo.

Japanese whiskey tastes similar to Irish and Scottish whiskey. I was kind of expecting to see it, but, I also thought that It'd be a little ironic because of It's flavor profile. Eh.
whiskey has strict rules to make, and i dont think they have enough room to store years worth of barrels

There’s a whole spectrum of Japanese whiskey. On the one hand, there’s the good stuff that’s “a bit pricey”. Then there’s the cheap Nikka whiskey that’s like 3700 yen (I dunno, like US$34 or €30?) for a 4L bottle at Costco.

I LOVE shochu!!! And when you take shochu and add plums (Ume) to it with sugar and let it sit a few months you make Umeshu! Love both of them! Hits you fast if you don't watch what you are doing but you come down quickly IMO.

My Opa (Dutch grandfather) and his Japanese neighbour from down the road, both immigrants to a rural area in Canada where they weren't readily accepted by the rest of the community (this is decades ago, and xenophobia and racism were still very common and brazen), would get together and drink sake. The hell if they knew what each other was SAYING much of the time, even BEFORE the alcohol... the two men would just get together to hang out and get drunk =P

I fucking love Umeshuu!! Drink it all the time! They have it in pretty much every convenience store here in Japan. I don't think I've seen that orange one before though. Sake takes some getting used to - it still has some of that yeasty after-taste, but I still love it. Also, it's pronounced like it's spelled - sake. Not saki. Ke as in kept or ketamine.

if it was pronounced sayk, and it was pronounced like it's spelled, then it would be spelled sayk too. The letters "ke" in "kettle" are pronounced like they're spelled, but the "e" is silent in the English word "sake" so it's not pronounced like its spelled :P

My first saki experience was from a teppanyaki restaurant where the chef squirted saki in your mouth. I had no idea how potent it was and the chef told us to put a hand up to stop. I, unfortunately, DIDN'T put my hand up lol. I was smashed while having dinner with my parents, aunts, sisters and their young children. Someone had to drive me home and someone else had to follow them with my car. They still make fun of me about it.
I was hoping you'd all try a chu-hi or habusaki those are some of the greatest Japanese alcoholic beverages.

Shochu is a beverage that's similar to vodka, it can be consumed in a regular cup. Same goes for umeshu.
