Microsoft's Surface Laptop Go is the newest in their smaller, cheaper "Go" line. The Surface Laptop is impressively light, though this is partly due to a plastic base. It feel sturdy, but less premium than the all-aluminum laptops many folks are used it.
The Surface Laptop Go packs a solid processor, but no additional GPU options, and lacks Intel's more powerful Iris Pro graphics. It also has pretty limited RAM, 8GB, and 256GB of storage. The biggest issue might be a surprisingly low-res screen, an oddity in this age of retina displays.
The Surface Laptop Go is not a bad device, but it comes with a lot of compromises that make the price hard to justify. A tablet or chromebook might work better than the lowest-end machine, and you can probably find a laptop from last year with better specs than the higher end ones. Still, Microsoft has made a well designed small laptop for under $1000, and it may be perfect for folks looking for a reliable work machine, or a school computer for a student.

I find it amazing that modern "mid range" phones are more expensive than full sized laptops. Entry level, but still a full laptop nonetheless.
In the "alleged" words of PT Barnum, "There's is a sucker born every minute."
@@willhoffert3744 not really, mid range phones don’t have a processor that is more powerful that a quad core 10th gen i5
@@willhoffert3744 Because they have 4 cameras capable of 4k video recording and an oled display, all condensed into a tiny package. Laptops are overpriced because of intel’s monopoly
@@RK-um9tu If you can't afford it, then flagship phones aren't made for you then. Proportionally if this is all you can afford for a laptop, I'd expect your phone to cost way less. Flagship phone are for people who want the best and can comfortably afford it, of course proportionally they wouldn't even be looking at these budget laptops.
@@User-cb4jm Our 2020 120 refresh rate, 3/4 cameras, wireless charging (but the pad has a wire), water resistance (but don't drop it in a pool or the ocean), glass back (so be careful), 512 ram, edge to edge screen phone that will depreciate by 50% in a year is only for people who want and can afford the best. And if you don't buy our phone it can only mean one thing, you can't afford it...lol
“Any laptop these days” yeah, because you never use a lower priced laptop these days
Full HD on a small laptop screen is too small to look at. Windows scaling doesn't work
Exactly. Tons of reviewers keep comparing this to the Surface Laptop 3 and stuff like it, when it really isn't for that price range
Well said.
exactly....i'm buying this as an upgrade from my $400 asus laptop i got 3 years ago...
Seriously they.act like $500 is cheap tf we still can't get pass $349 for a great laptop
I have the 8GB RAM /128GB SSD model and I really enjoy it. It has been a solid laptop for everything that I have needed it for, plus you can find the mid range model for the base model price these days which makes it a great buy IMO.
What was the usable storage on the 128 GB? Does the fan noise go up if multiple tabs are open on Chrome? Thanks
yup, just got mine for 430€/ about $500 incl. tax. Such a good deal for the 128gb model. I noticed it can be really laggy, but that's just a windows problem and even happens on the i7 surface laptop 4. So all in all awesome device
Just got the 8GB/128 model at best buy for $550 and I'm absolutely content with the performance /features at this price. I was hesitant about the screen based off initial reviews but after using it in store and at home it's a non issue for me. Honestly, if you didn't tell me it wasn't a FHD panel I wouldn't have ever noticed on my own. It looks way better than some of these gaming monitors that are 1080p at 27".
My wife has a 2019 MacBook air with retina display and side by side her screen is exponentially better up close. But at normal distance the surface is absolutely fine.
This will primarily be for movie watching while I'm at the airport or on a long flight, and casual web browsing on the couch. I'm sold on the surface products now, and I might get a more poweful option down the road if they offer laptops with the new AMD APU.
I even gave this a shot at x cloud gaming this morning. I have a wifi 6 router so this actually made for a really enjoyable streaming experience with forza, halo and fallout 4. Bonus now is that I have a use case for my spare xbox controller.
I have the same one. Absolutely amazing!
Being interested in getting one. Can you play a game called Wizard101 on it? I want something that can play light games, and do basic tasks, like school and such for an affordable price. Would it run fine?
I have been using the Surface Go laptop now for a little over a week for work. I work in field sales and was needing a capable machine that offered full-featured windows apps but also something that I did not have to spend a 1k on. Again I use this strictly for work, I only use Microsoft Office apps and the web browser. I do not use this device for media consumption, gaming, or editing, I have a personal machine for those things and a Nintendo switch.
What I liked about this compared to the competition was the build, namely the sleekness of the device. When looking at the competition at this price point, the materials just felt cheap and meh to be desired. As mentioned in the video, this device feels like a bigger version of a tablet. I use this device more like a Chromebook, and occasionally as a PC. Before buying this, I did try using a Chromebook for work, but Microsoft apps on a Chromebook just aren't ready yet in my opinion, otherwise, I would have kept the Chromebook.
I would definitely recommend this as a secondary device, or for students to take to class to take notes on. You can definitely cram out a last-minute paper on this with no problem. I would also recommend this for someone who is looking for a Chrome-Book and wants Microsoft products as a secondary thought. Like me.
How come no one's liked your comment yet. You've explained it do well for people to know more about it.

Kindda disappointed about the screen res. Still I really like the rounded corners :P
People need to get over looking at the numbers and screaming about 1080p... nobody complains about a 1920x1080 screen on a 15.6in laptop. In fact that is considered acceptable and gets zero judgement but has 7 less ppi at 141ppi. If anything this kind of pixelation is typical of a 15.6in laptop and I believe those laptops are the ones that need a greater than 1080p screen.
@@User-cb4jm 1080p on 15 inch is awful. Laptops should have at least 1440p.
Its an absolute perfect resolution considering physical size and scaling on windows, being what it is, with regards to win32 compatibility

This is a pretty good laptop if you want good quality IPS panel at this price range. It's possibly one of the best features of Surface Laptop Go.
I am disheartened by the comments here complaining about the display res issue. The actual fact is this laptop has relatively good LCD screen with nearly 95% coverage of sRGB without the need for calibration. It's pretty good for amateur photo-editing due to high color accuracy. Also, the display panel comes with high frequency of PWM for screen dimming that could prevent eye-strain.
Trust me, majority of other laptop brands at this price range are using cheap display panels as compromise for other features. Cheap display panel usually has ghosting issue when dimming the screen (try waving your hand in front of your laptop display and you will get what I mean) and also terrible color accuracy. This is the reason why I ditch other laptop brands at the same or lower price range including business model laptops due to bad display quality. There's no way you could get good quality IPS display on par with Surface at this price range from other laptop brands.

Watching this video 2 years on is pretty funny. All of the important aspects of the laptop have been preserved but now you can get it SO much cheaper. This is the right choices for most people. Windows scaling doesn't work, so the "low" resolution is a fantastic choice from Microsoft. Win32 compatibility with windows 10 dictates archaic choices still being the best solution. Plus you will save battery. Win - win for everyone. You can buy two budget student Asus or Acer laptops for the price of one of these, so calling it cheap and budget is not true either
Microsoft should have adopted Ryzen and the savings should have gone to increase the screen resolution.
What's the problem with the screen, most laptops still use 1080p on 15 inch or even 17 inch. -- this is 12.45 inch. ... And its 99% sRBG. While most of laptops have 50-60% on these machines. Agree on the Ryzen 4300u would make a whole new level of battery time on the machine.

Microsoft cheaping out on specs once again for its price points, 4gb of ram on windows 10? On a $500 base starting price??
Its not even for price points, its just straight up a bad value. There are better laptops for that price that wont do horrible things like giving you flash storage slower than hard drives.
Same pattern with Surface Go, I suppose. Put terrible specs in the base unit and the decent specs in their most expensive ones to get people to upgrade. You're really only paying for design here.
I agree 4GB of RAM and 64GB of emmc storage is horrible. The midrange config should be the base config IMO. But an argument can be made that you are getting a better trackpad and build quality for this price.
I wanna know if this laptop is good for a college student like me... I really need a laptop that can run adobe softwares. I don't think I'll use it alot tho.
and is it goood for university?
I'm looking at an alt to the Macbook Air - particularly now that they've switched to the M1 - which sounds great for most - but breaks a lot of DAW and VST plug ins for music production, and complicates workflow. I'm looking for something small and capable like the Air - for use with a MIDI controller keyboard. This at half the price seems to fit the bill (once you replace the S OS with normal Windows). The processor is actually faster than the last Intel gen of the Air so it 'should' be more than decent for mobile DAW use. Can any music gearheads confirm this?

This laptop is amazing value. It has 4 cores and is just as fast is most laptops nowadays! For this laptop you expect a celeron. Check cpu benchmark for confirmation of this. The resolution isn't that bad. It is 1534x1024. The resolution preserves the most important part of the resolution the vertical height the 1024 is only a tab shorter than 1080. So perfect for coders and people that write up documents. Also it saves battery for people that find it unnecessary to watch wide format videos. The only qualm is it doesn't have physical button mouse buttons. Honestly this review isn't that good, the complaints about the size of the trackpad on a small laptop makes no sense. How is the laptop cheap considering it has 4 cores. Plus you can get 16gb ram.
the 720p display is not that bad on a 12.4" laptop. Surface go laptop feels very premium
But can you use win+[0-9], win+up/dn/lft/rgt, use key to interact with UI, menu key?
How do you fix a misspelling? 1) Drag your cursor over from the other side of the screen, right click, move up, left click? or 2) press left, menu key, enter?
Key == work more efficient.

I really think it shouldn't be a person who has used 1000 or 1500 dollars laptop who reviews it. It should be someone who is using a 3-4-year-old entry-level laptop whose thoughts we really want to know. Of course, it should be guided by a professional reviewer like you but stuff like keyboard backlight, good camera, plastic feel, when we hear this from someone who has used a Macbook pro 16 they will certainly be bad and I am sure u are keeping the price in mind but everyone is biased. Hence I would really like to hear from someone who is actually thinking about "upgrading" to this machine.
Totally true, i think this laptops aimed at kids or high school students and this guy is reviewing it as if it were competing with $2000 macbooks and xps, when in reality its competing with computers that cost less than an iphone. 8gb of ram and 1024p is more than enough for most people who dont do any video editing or intense stuff and are mostly looking at battery life, a nice design, and it being “good enough”.
Obviously they can't just pluck the ideal user for every laptop off the street and train them to write an excellent review - rather these tech reviewers should temper their expectations or at the very least use similarly priced competition to compare. But he isn't wrong - you can get Acer Swifts with the same i5, a 1080p 13.3in screen, backlit keyboard, 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD for not very much more - the base model has ridiculous specs and I don't think the aluminium lid or excellent trackpad can make up for it completely.

I got the $700 Surface Laptop Go and everyone says the battery lasts long, its been 4 hours, and its already at 25% of battery, is that normal? No gaming, regular use. Could I have a defective one?
You need to put it in battery saver mode and turn brightness down a lot
Me too, Amanda. My battery drops 25% for every hour of regular use. Screen brightness at 80% and bluetooth off. That's dissapointing!
The only good thing I can say about the terrible resolution, since they are only using an i5 and only 8GB RAM at the least the laptop won't be slowed down by having to push a high quality monitor. Things should run much more smoothly IMHO. They should have really went with the 1035G7 not G1 minor disappointment and at the very least 16GB RAM (Option) 🥺😩.
If you were going to spec it so high why wouldn't you just get a normal surface laptop?
@@johnm91326 because the normal surface has a terrible performance to price ratio. Especially at that price point with no thunderbolt 3, super no go
this would be a great present to give a 6-11 yr old
there is a 16GB RAM option
This has a better ppi than 1920x1080p 15.6in laptops and nobody complains about that. It's a bright, relatively accurate IPS panel relative to its price. People really need to view screens rather than get hung up on numbers. Just because its 1080p doesn't mean it will be bright enough or use IPS tech.
nice shirt
can this laptop play minecraft comfortably?
A $550 chromebook can do more than this? Really? Nah
Caí I switched from s mode to normal?
hi, i am a student..but an Engineering student..i like bout microsoft laptop but i would like to to know if this laptop go is usable for engineering software.. for the 699 usd model
Plis give me opinionn on this laptop🙏i really appreciate it
Usually engineering software needs GPU power for graphical designs. Nope, this ain't for you. Sorry...
@3:30 the so ain’t ur efficient choice
You left out the speakers.
@6:15 not for late night werk
Do you think this would be suitable for university work?
and is it good for university?
@@binnurercan5597 Yes and yes
But can I run ultra ray tracing mods for Minecraft
A little confused at why this guy "doesn't get" that he's reviewing a $550 "budget" laptop. Crazy, Microsoft had to cut corners and make compromises to bring the price down but this guy just seems dumbfounded by that idea. Jesus how is this guy a tech reviewer? Do you really think a $550 will have the same build quality, features, and screen as a $1000+ laptop?
At any price point, it's worth knowing the strengths and weaknesses of a thing! I spent $300 on a detachable Chromebook, but if the display weren't amazing, that would have been a mistake
Yes I understand that - the point of a review is to do just that, pointing out the strengths and weaknesses. But this guy seemed genuinely baffled that this laptop has lower specs and that MS had to cut corners to meet the price point...
Exactly what i was thinking while watching the video. After seeing few videos i felt like many journalists will just praise apple products if they release something like this.(with High price offcourse).
‘We haven’t seen 148 ppi in notebooks in years.’ As every single 15.6” 1080p screen has 126 ppi and that’s a very common resolution for laptops up to 1500$
@@garretthanson6424 I'm not saying that 144ppi is insufficient, necessarily, but my $300 Lenovo Duet came with $4GB RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 1920x1200 10.2in display. It also has all day battery. I'm willing to accept that this combination is almost exclusively due to the MediaTek processor it's running, but I haven't had too many slowdowns, and when I do, it's because I run out of RAM...
How would it do 1080p editing base model is my question?
