    Thanks for showing how to set the bias pots. I have a pair of Rockford PR-2100 TYPE II that I bought back in the 80's, one worked and one was sold to me for parts. The only part that was missing was the turn-on transistor! So I had a collection of transistors and found one that made it work. I messed around with this amp and in doing so I "adjusted" one of the bias pots and not noticing any audible difference I turned it back to it's original position. After seen how critical this adjustment is I'm going to dig this amp out of my closet and put it on my scope (one identical to yours) and see just how far out of whack it is.. Thanks for the tip mate!

    Damn that old school stuff. The old school stuff can last forever, if taken care of, and that is terrible. I mean it's surely not going to help make rich people richer if you don't have to keep buying new replacements to replace the new school stuff that last only a few years. Damn it, my 1976 Heathkit AA-1506 Audio Amplifier is working perfectly and still almost looks as good as brand new. This is terrible. And that's not all. My 1976 home made speakers, that each contain one 15" woofer, 2 mid-range drivers, and 4 tweeters, are still working and sounding as good as the day I built them. But it gets even worse. My 1978 Soundcraftsmen PE2217 Equalizer with Preamp, looks and works as good as the day I purchased it. Then comes my 1987 DENON DCD-900 CD player. It too looks and works as good as the day i bought it. And then there is my 1978 AKAI 630D reel-to-reel tape recorder, another damn thing that looks and works as good as new. And the other pain inflicting item, is my 1976 Yamaha CT-800 FM/AM Stereo Tuner with Exclusive NF Switching MPX Demodulator. Yep, it's tough, not handing money to the rich.

    Always loved old school Rockford. My all-time favorites, though, are the 2nd gen Punch amps (non-HD). I had a 2nd gen Punch 150 way back in the day, and that thing was bulletproof. Sounded awesome too. Nice work my friend. 🏆🥇🥇🎖

    What state are in the silvery-color capacitors? They look like ones I've seen before as troublesome, tendency for all of them to go open-circuit. Maybe they ARE all open circuit and doesn't noticeably affect the perfoermance, being as it's a DC-coupled amplifer. I don't know this brand of amp, but some DC-coupled amps have an extra bootstrap bias thing going, on to acheive more gate-drive swing.

      @@barevids A few suppliers and one that I used to buy a lot from has over 30K pcs., the only problem will be the amount you will need. Most suppliers I used hardly sold small quantities. This one supplier has a minimum order qty. of 1K on most items, but since they come in tubes of 30 units pricing for 900pcs. would be $2.78usd. each if I was to buy them and that isn't including my markup. They used to be much cheaper, but most suppliers jack up the price when a item goes obsolete.

    Perhaps as an old school guy @ 62 years but I've seen these teeny teeny little parts once before and I said "Ok I'm all for high tech stuff being made smaller and more compact but this is ridiculous". These parts are just too small. I mean put a standard resistor next to one of these and it is inevitable that they'll fail. I love my new tube amps and solid state stuff but these parts are a joke. PCBs are no ones friend. They flex and crack and a trace thats open is very hard to spot. These parts are a joke. Sorry...just saying.

    • @barevids
      @barevids  Před 8 měsíci +1

      My good friend, these parts you mention are massive. The resistors, capacitors and diodes in your mobile phone are only visible and serviceable with a microscope 😁 I don't mind it as long as the assembly quality and application are correct. Smaller parts are typically more efficient and suffer less from vibration damages since their resonance is way outside of that it would be subjected to in normal use. It also allows devices to be much smaller. If your phone or laptop was made with through-holes you wouldn't be able to carry it around haha.

    • @scratchback2001
      @scratchback2001 Před 8 měsíci

      I forgot to add something. Printed Circuit Boards have their limitions. Mobile phones today use these parts and I was well aware of that. Vacuum tubes or Valves as we call them here in Australia generate a lot of heat. If you mount a tube socket to a PCB, over time with cycled use, there is a high probability of a trace going faulty. I own a PrimaLuna High Power integrated amp. All of the components are wired point to point except for a few PCBs in very low voltage and heat areas. All the valve sockets are mounted to the chassis and they are surrounded by pencil sized holes to let as much heat out as possible. The 8 EL34s give me a linear and clean valve sound using the 4 ohm tap. I've been using this amp since I bought it 7 years ago and it has never missed a beat. The adaptive auto bias in this amp runs the tubes and analyses them 10 times per second....kinda like your EFI in your car. If a valve fails, the amp goes into protect mode and a red LED lights up next to the faulty valve. You replace it, shut the amp off which resets it. You turn it back on and no more multi-meters to bias the new tube. A guy in America left his New PrimaLuna amp on before going on a 6 month work/holiday and he nearly keeled over when he saw that the amp was on when he got back home. He got a tech friend to analyse them and because the plates were biased off, Everything was fine. He lost about 2% usage from the EL34s and the 6 12AU7s last forever. I hope that clears up my mistake. Andrew from OZ.
