  • This movie is a flat out masterpiece.
There are so many elements of this film that have been borrowed and/or stolen, you'll be certain you've seen the film before.
If you're like me, and this film is new to you, then you we just got schooled on what it means to make a "lean" film. There is not an ounce of extra fat on this movie and every seen is perfectly placed.
I don't want to say much more because I talk plenty in this video review, but I will say that it is an absolute MUST watch, and I'm at the bottom of a very long list of people that would tell you the same thing. It is required viewing.

Appreciate your review, I'm Algerian and this movie is must-see tv every year on Nov 1st and July 5th by the whole country. Its like Home Alone on Christmas in the US lol. By the way the character Djaafar is actually playing himself, and he co-produced the film. Yacef Saadi

Nice review of the cinematographic tour de force of Pontecorvo. Here some supplemental info
1- casbah is simply the old town of Algiers, or at least the 1/3remaining after the demolition of the twin by the French colonialism. This where most Algerians use to live and contrasts with the French part of Algiers.
2-the insider feel you have in watching the movie is due to 3 main factors. First the original script was written by Yacef Saadi who was both a resistant during the battle of Algiers and an actor playing his own role. Second, the casting was built based on locals with no acting experience. The magic of pontecorvo did the rest. Three, the movie was done just after the events of the battle of Algiers, which was useful in giving a faithful reconstitution of the events. Finally circonstances did that during the movie shooting there was a coup d’état with military tanks in the whole town. Pontecorvo opportunistic and reactivity skills took advantage of this to shoot scenes that where part of the magic making

This movie is only about Algiers, but things like this were happening all over, and there were operations inside France itself and there was a protest in Paris well known where police shot at the crowd at night, and then drowned the Algerians in the river.

Casbah is a neighborhood build over 1000 years ago in Algiers, it's like the old Islamic part of Algiers
