Remove barrel from igntion lock on BMW 525I

  • This clip shows how to remove the barrel from ignition lock where the key is available. The barrel can then be used in another ignition lock or overhauled. In my instance the ignition locking mechanism was faulty and the steering lock had engaged and the ignition was not turning. The bar inside the lock had failed and snapped. I had to replace the locking mechanism and I wanted to keep the same key. If you need a new key dealerships will need to order from Germany and takes 2 weeks. Hi,
I would like to thank you for this helpful video!
I spent an hour and a half in the junk yard trying to take one out! What I read online was of no help.
    Thanks again

Lifesaver, thanks. Took me ages to get the right piece of wire, ended up taking spring out of a clothes peg, perfect size and barrel popped out first time. Cheers.

I help me. My problem is bigger than just removing the cylinder thank you.
I learn a lot from this video.
I use a staple from a Bostitch nail gun, about 1" 1/2 long; i bend about a 1/4 of and inch and it work perfect.

    I was helping a friend.
It took me a couple of minutes to take the ignition off and it did not fix my problem so I put it back on and he call a locksmith. It took him more than an hour to remove the ignition.
He probably did not know how to take it off or he just wanted to give us a our moneys worth.
It took five hours to finally remove the everything and a couple of weeks to get the car back.

So its like the GM Style with the external pin hole just without the bezel that sandwiches into the housing.

@CH1CK3Ncentauri Hey, I have a key for my BMW 525i and it doesn't work for the doors or trunk at all. It goes in the key hole all the way but doesn't turn. Also the whole ignition cylinder is missing, so I will have to go down to Pick N pull to get another whole ignition assembly. What did you have to do?

Dang, the Bentley manual and all the online forums just say "push" or "push hard," not a one mentioned that you have to turn it. I just broke off an allen key inside the hole trying to "just push," wish I would've seen this video sooner. :(

unfortunately the video is way to shaky and I can not see anything... You should have put the camera on a stand or something. Very bad quality
