  • Getting your Ekkie to eat healthy seems to be a challenge for most
With highly publicized commercial diets (like pellets) and false truths regarding nutrition (facebook is a major culprit), it complicates things further. Ekkies raised on junk food (seeds, pellets, nuts and bean pulses/sprouted items) are difficult to convince to switch to healthy alternatives.
This method creates a transitional approach with commonly found ingredients. I want to stress EVERYTHING IN MODERATION. For more information, please see our patreon site with many articles free to the public: www.patreon.com/eleganteclectus

There is a lot of false information on the internet about ekkies and outdated books. I would say that the patreon site has over 100 articles tailored specifically to Eclectus- that are science based for as little as $1.00 a month (you can cancel anytime). It is a great start to inform yourself about the complications with Eclectus, so common medical issues (feather issues, toe tapping, plucking) , diet ( sprouted seed and beans need to be avoided) and a great network of things you never new specific to Eclectus only. IT is a great place to start: www.patreon.com/eleganteclectus

I have started mine on nutritious Chop. He ate 3/4 of his bowl at lunch which I count as a success

How many minutes do you put the veggie mix in the microwave?

The amount of time will depend on the size of the chop. You want it to be very tender/soft. If you have shredded chop- it may be 2 minutes. However if you have 1cm pieces (which I usually do), then it is about 4 minutes. Hope that helps!

So I feed all of these healthy things to my ekkie and only use pecans for trick training. Why does he still get dark feathers? They don't grow in that way, they become dark later. He is very active (free flies around the house), eats healthy and I take him outside in the sun several days a week, even in winter. I took him to 3 dfferent avian vets who didn't have a clue, but weren't willing to do blood tests on him because they said he seemed perfectly healthy. He's only 4 but he has had this problem since he was around 6 months old. Not sure what it could be.

Great question: Dark feathers have a couple causes, it always starts with improper diet. Feather weakness (which is usally the case) is caused by imbalance of nutrients. The feather grows out green, but it weakens over time and turns dark (under a microscope, it is actually near translucent like a dying leaf). The diet cant be just a mixture of 'all sorts of healthy things' it is actually pretty specific and by looking closely at the feather you can often determine the missing or overage of certain nutrients. There are hundreds of articles on the patreon site that discuss diet (as well as training, anatomy, etc). You can visit it directly www.patreon.com/eleganteclectus

@@ElegantEclectus Yes it seems like his feathers weaken over time (you can rub them off and they become brittle as well as dark). He gets carrots, snap peas, celery, capsicum (different colors of bell peppers), cucumber, blueberries (4-5) or raspberries (2-3), corn (about 10 kernels), bok choy zucchini and/or squash, 1 or 2 chickpeas a week, and the pecans for trick training, but I am going to switch to rice after seeing your video on that. Could it be from the pecans? I train him every other day with them and he usually gets a tablespoon by the end of training (he has a big routine of fetch, roll over, high five, wave, step up, basketball, putting items in a grocery cart, etc lol). Maybe I underestimated the pecans?

@@briarrose7016 A quick look at your diet and I can see it is missing numerous vitamins and minerals required for feather production. Adding the rice will only exasperate the issue as it is a neutral food which they will consume (forgoing to mush mix). Furthermore it is slowly digested which will increase regurgitation. The pecans are not the main issue, it is the main diet and likely some organ functions because of the ekkie unique crop function. I provide individual assistance to people who join the patreon site as most issues are far more deep rooted than 'just add this'.
