It's wonderful to see more of Michael at the chateau, even if he is covered in pigeon poo. Pavlina's garden cages look fantastic!
Michael’s presence at the chateau sometimes seems to lift Stephanie’s spirits.
I was so glad to see Michael taking his job seriously, you do have to be very careful with bird & bat droppings due to histoplasmosis…a former co work lost sight because of histoplasmosis, another friend was on treatments for weeks, once nesting is over I would block birds totally
And pigeon mites are a problem as well. Where I once worked in a historical building it had to be fumigated due to pigeon mites. I remember waiting for a bus after work. I was wearing a yellow top and I looked down to see I was covered in black bugs. I tried to discreetly brush them off before getting on the bus. 😳😳 Some of my co-workers also got an allergic reaction to them.
Also pigeon poo damages stone buildings over time.
Glad you mentioned that. Pigeons are very dirty birds 😞 (sorry Stephanie. I know you're very fond of them and they do look lovely in pictures)
Did anyone else notice that Michael almost said “poo-geons” just after the 17:46 mark? It was so serendipitously hilarious!

Honestly, everyone at Lalande goes all out to improve the beautiful place. Phillips painting, you and Micheal cooking, Maria cleaning, Pavlina making rod cages for daffodils, Amaury, Kersey and Davey in the garden. You are all awesome. Micheal full of pigeon poo, but now a pigeon daddy too.Everyone is just bustling for the opening of B&B season. It is much better than Downton Abbey. Much love to you all.

Those fancy double tulips are as a gardener I consider one and done. They look beautiful the first year but never look the same after that. The stems become shorter and need stalking as they fall over. So they are expensive and not cost effective. When planting tulips for reblooming, buy Darwins as they multiply year after year like a daffodil. 😊

I learned this method from my mother who lived in Indonesia for a number of years. Worlds every time.
I think the cages in the garden look pretty, Pavlina is certainly paying her way with all the great projects she has undertaken, she's been a real asset.

Hi! I’m a Singaporean Chinese. It’s interesting to note that Maria has used the same method to measure the amount of water to cook rice as the one I was taught when I was a little girl forty years ago!

That is a very wonderful reuse of the bendy twigs. It's so attractive. Pavlina is so brilliant. Poor Michael Potts doing a very necessary and dirty job of pigeon control. I never saw baby pigeons before. Thanks for sharing all that in detail. Is the bedding dry cleaned or laundered? You have an army of very talented people who give so much of their energies to the upkeep, and designs inside and outside.
The twig system is so pretty in the garden.
I did this last year and they started to grow. It looked so funny as green buds grew from apple branches

Michael’s lion photo is amazing. Activities all over the chateau. Everyone is so busy and everything is looking terrific. Had a laugh about Maria and the handles facing the same way, I do the same thing. Don’t feel so weird now.

Regarding the pigeons: you need to fix the wire really well and the edges and also close the smaller wholes in the wall as pigeons are really intelligent and manage to get through even very litte gaps. We had this problem in a covered inner courtyard in Vienna….

I think I will try Pavlina's idea of the bending twigs, maybe they will keep the rabbits and squirrels away from my tulip leaves, they are getting all chewed up!!! Oh, and another thing that you have inspired me to do....I now drink my tea (Bigelow Lemon Lift Black Tea) with a little bit of half and half and Stevia. Your gardens will be beautiful this year....you are a blessed lady Stephanie to have so many people helping you restore Lalande.
As much as I thoroughly enjoyed this Sunday vlog which was a special treat for so many reasons, I'm happy to be here at home soaking up the sunshine at 32 degrees Celsius. As for Pavlina"s neat branch wigwams, I hope it proves successful against invading peacocks since it had to have been a great deal of work whipping all those rebellious branchlets into shape. Especially as they whipped back! Now we know how Pavlina's garden grows.

I can confirm that that trick with the rice works even for the most amateurish (like me!) cooks. An Asian friend told me about it years ago and I have never had failed rice since. The proportions work in a saucepan or a rice cooker! Thank you for the video!

Everyone so busy pitching in with the work. Poor Amaury and busting granite so not easy. He needs a getaway for sauna treatment and massage and dear Michael Potts with a very dirty and unhealthy job. I would have nightmares from that job! And what perseverance your Phillip has what with painting at least 3 coats on that ceiling and trim. I can’t leave out the ladies with plantings and cleanings, oh my!! May this season for the B&B bring many new and returning guests at the Chateau🥰
I love watching Maria get organized. I really wish someone would paint those big kitchen cupboards. That would go a long way to freshen up the kitchen...one day.

Pigeons should not be roosting in the attic, rafters. Their poop will rot the wood out and stain the exterior of the building. Make a dovecote for them.
One cup of rice, two cups of water ratio is always spot on . Always rinse the rice in hot water after cooked if you don’t want it sticky , Basmati rice is always better. 😉🐨🥰

I would have given up on trying for a hedge there... it seems the bedrock is WAY too close to the surface to make it a viable plan... I hope they have enough room for their roots and don't just keel over dead because there isn't enough soil... Amaury is really giving it all he's got! I hope they survive!

Thanks so much for the lovely vlog. Too bad the weather didn't cooperate for Davey's visit and everyone participating in the garden but beautiful to see the result! I have noticed that whatever weather you have mid week, we get 4 or 5 days later in the southern part of Ontario Canada. We enjoyed your Easter spring/summery weather late last week andthis weekend. The forecast is to be cold and rainy tomorrow and for a few days after. Thanks for the preview! big hugs

Passing through Amsterdam on my way to Scotland I bought 200 pink tulip bulbs the 'peony' kind and dragged them through three planes, four trains and two taxis along with my luggage. I planted them in large terra cotta planters and waited patiently. A few months later they all came up as the common small red ones, pretty in a way but NOT what I bought so beware of buying bulbs in Amsterdam !
OMG that's terrible.
So rude.
It even was in local news in A'dam last year that the famous flower market on the Singelgracht is a GIANT tourist rip off. The amount of bulbs in the packages was not correct and most were rotten or too old and didn't come up at all. These criminals know damn well that tourists will not come back with a reclamation the year after. So they can go on with their fraud. If you ever want to buy tulip or other flower bulbs in Amsterdam buy them in autumn at the Monday morning flower market on the Amstelveld next to Prinsengracht. There you find real bulb vendors and wonderful varieties.
I love seeing the hive of activity and all the wonderful people who have become a part of LaLande. Never a boring moment. I love Michaels photos, so I will pop over to see his new channel. The dedication everyone has to make the garden just as Davey envisions it, is truly wonderful to see. I can't wait until your gazebo is put up, it's been a long time coming. I hope it goes up this year. I love Maria's disciplined approach to ensuring the kitchen stays clean and organized, streamlining it to ensure efficiency. When you have multiple meals to prepare each day, the last thing you want is to take time to re-clean and reorganize. I like to clean as I go and have a place for everything as well. I hope all your guests this year have a wonderful time at LaLande.
Love when Stephanie feeds the troops. Everyone is working so hard! Everything will be clean and fresh. Caroline and Amaury were working during their first vacation in a year. My sister said having children was like that.😂

Thinly sliced onions demonstrate the true danger of kitchen contests, you could always find yourself assigned to onion duty. Personally I suspect Michael threw the contest on purpose, he looks like he’s more than capable of some mischief.😈 Though he is right about the pigeons, judging by all the 🐦 pictures layering the stairwell there are already enough pigeons inside the Chateau.

👏👏 To Michael for awareness of how to deal with pigeon mess and wearing a mask!!! Thought I have 35 white pigeons but counted last night, have 40!!! I love them but too many is ridiculous. So of course have a foundling in an isolation crate in the house as the weather here is same as there, horrid. Pigeons are like potato chips

I think they may use a different type of rice in the UAE. I always buy Indian basmati rice which is not the same thing as regular basmati. Compared to most long grain rice it stays much more separate and al dente.
The iron rod that Kirstie has found could be an opener for some valve of a water pipe in the ground. Probably it had wooden handles that have disappeared.
Now it's on to Michael Potts Photography and the story of the Lion of Zimanga. I'm imagining it to be a bold tale of Michael successfully wrestling this aggressive lion and pinning it to the ground, thereby saving fellow travelers from a savage attack. The story will end with Michael getting the lion to pose quietly for a couple of photos.

Hi Steph and all the wonderful Lalanders, have you ever thought of making some Cooking videos with your recipes? I would love to know how to make Michael's bread and I would love to cook that chicken with rice . In Spain, we have a special measurement for cooking the rice: water or broth should be double the quantity of rice, for example if you are cooking one cup of rice you should add two cups of water or broth, also if you want to add more taste to it, you can add some sliced carrots and a garlic clove, you will take them off when you serve the rice.
