- This short clip from History Channel's 'Extreme Trains' series shows the Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, PA, where the Pennsylvania Railroad (1846-1968) built many of its steam and electric locomotives until the 1940's. After dieselization the shops continued as a heavy overhaul and repair facility for subsequently the Pennsylvania Railroad and its successors Penn Central (1968-1970), Conrail (1970-1999) and Norfolk Southern (1999-). In the late 90's it assembled a series of new heavy freight duty SD70 locomotives from the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors and a number of freight locomotive derived passenger locomotives.

I ran that crane for 8 to 10 months when I worked there 1991 to 1994. One nerve racking job.
All remote now. Only time anyone gets in the basket is if the remote system is down
Amazing to see such large workshop!
Altoonan here. The heat + grease from these shops produces a distinctive smell as you walk by. And the freight trains run through downtown all night long. PRR, then Conrail, then NS. The horseshoe curve was on the German's bombing list during WWII. Pretty cool to see Dutch people interested in our city
I'm glad to see Altoona still working on trians whent, from buildings steam engines to fixing disals.
I live right by here. I never knew they did a mini series on it.
Why does he flap his arms like a bird when he talks? I'd hate to have dinner with him as he winds up wearing more than he eats.
That was an awesome video it's been awhile since I seen a video I really enjoyed watching on engine repair.
Man to think that Steam locomotives are the only one that was there before (not to mention the prr s1 was built there) is amazing to me. it stood the the test of time!
Beautiful c40-8w!
Awesome! Someday I will visit this shop...
Nice, my dad worked in the shops in the late 50's and into the 60's didn't have that sort of equpment then. Thanks for the reminder of him.
* repetitively pointing fingers at ground *
I LIKE, TO USE, HAND GESTURES, ALL, THE TIME.
+Steven Michael I wonder if his wife sleeps in a different bed?
+Mark Brown probably this guy needs to lay off the coffee great view of junata but they really need to either up the dose of downers or lower the dose of uppers and caffeine He's on
Steven Michael --your avatar suggests that you would know the answer to my question: Isn't this facility the old Pennsylvania Railroad Shops? This railroad has fascinated me for many years--even though it has long been defunct. I have long admired their variety of different locomotives.

Norfolk Southern Rocks !!!
BNSF is better
Where the 1361 was built. Good to see their still in use.
This place is impressive! I would love to tour it. I worked in a small car/sub ladle shop for a steel company. Everything is done like a caveman because they never upgraded the shop. The Juniata Shop has the front of a heavy freight train cab mounted as a sign!
MY man Ive been there i have family that worked there an donce in a while they would allow workers to bring family an dfriends to tour the place it is soooo cool
That is amazing.
I remember watching this video as a kid.
OMG CONRAIILL!!!!

That huge turntable is back there?! I pass that place everyday and always wondered since childhood what all was back there. That thing is huge, and I never saw it before. Wow. I want to go look at it now.
Why is he shouting at me?
I'm glad they where hard hats in there God for bid one of those locos fall. It might hurt one of them.
Do you really think if a 75 ton + locomotive falls on someone a hardhat will help?
New Milford RAIL FAN whoosh
LOL the train locomotive woukd crush them
Each locomotive Waze 260 tons a hard hat ain’t going to stop a man from being crushed
Incredible what these maintenance teams can achieve.
I used to work here, until one day a locomotive fell on me. I suffered a pulled groin and hemoroids, I'm still recovering...
Bless your heart
my uncle took my out to this place for there july 4rth open house/tour that place is pretty awesome
ugh the high energy walking guy
@meccaturbo, yep, freshly repainted Ex. Conrail C40-8W. You can also see the RS3L still mounted when they picked it up.
Look at all the conrails there I remember when the last one they had was scraped
That was good, except the guy who kept yelling dumb comments and made wanna-be gangster movements at the same time.
He is not a wannabe. He is a real RR gangster.
That shop has been around since the 1880s. PRR built the shop originally
God, a furry
@criind The Top Gon program was the rebuilding of ex-NW and SOU hopper cars. There were about 15,000 rebuilds in the entire program which lasted fom 1991 to 1998. As far as I know, the program ended in 1998.
That was a GREAT video. I've pondered for years those 'lift here' marks on the sides of NS locos. Never knew what they actually did. Amazing.
I work here!! Cool video
Just one correction for the description. CONRAIL was formed in 1976 not 1970.
But they came up with the idea in 1970 over a case of beer camping in the woods just before passing out at the campfire.
Wow!
I work right across from the turntable! Its newer now haha
I repaired loco electrical systems for eight years. trust me, it's hard, filthy, complicated work. not half as much fun as you would think. oh, and claustrophobic much of the time as well. these guys earn their money for sure.
Marti Hill You are a liar!
and you would know this because....
Its true I know people who work at this place. It isn't pretty and the confined spaces the welders face are pretty haggard. But from what I hear and see it must be a blast fucking with your co workers there..
It's good work, don't get me wrong. But not half as glamorous as people think.
@@ackmino Who in the hell thinks it would be glamorous?
We want long Documentary about this mann
My next home gym lifting machine will be this .
Great
i was there this year and saw the 4th to last conrail hood... so sad :(
@Spyda0Jones I have to believe that. Although I got a pretty good view of the west part of the shops on a NS steam excursion pulled by 611 in 1994 when I was 12.
What show is this from, I live in Altoona Pa. 814 represent. haha
Tyrone here lol
in East Moline/Silvis Illinois there is a similar place.
id like to sit in the cab of one of these
This is awesome! ! The dude was kinda corny, buy I would have been too!
8381 being lifted by the crane is an ex Conrail GE....given away by its low nose numberboards
Cool! Ex-Conrail locomotives!
sup matt
I bet they have been a bunch of people met with death in this dangerous line of work.
UAU, Muito Legal! => WOW, Very Cool!
The aquisition of Conrail and it's Juniata Shops by NS set forth the demise of the Roanoke shops.
Interesting. Always thought the loco trucks weren't physically attached. Gravity just kept it all together.
CSXer you are correct. Most do not have a locking center pin. To lift it with the trucks attached you would have to chain them up.
All locomotives have, side clips, chains, or pins, to keep trucks under locomotive in case of a derailment.
Juniata Locomotive is the best in the world because,, they still have guys working there when Conrail owned it !!!!!
does this guy have a relationship with the camera.... i bet that camera mans personal space is being violated
I don’t know why people think Matt is a bad host. Of course he acts and sounds hyper, he’s been obsessed with trains his whole life and finally gets to see the coolest trains in America. He’s like a kid who gets to tour the best candy shops in the US. Besides, he’s actually a lot calmer in other episodes, it’s just in moments like this where he can go balls to the wall silly. So please, cut this guy some slack and enjoy the show.
Someone came up with the idea of lifting a locomotive 15 meters in the air and moving it from one side of the shop to another....... and turned that idea into a reality.
@criind I thought it lasted longer than that myself, but it was 1998 that it ended. Come to find out, there were 18,000 rebuilds instead of 15,000.
@TopThrillDan I agree
is there any more to this video?
Awesome. What is that show called? With that guy?
Esa será La General Eléctric, me gustaría manejar las locomotoras, esas tipo de grúas levanta locomotoras, levanta trailers y levanta contenedores
i just don't get why they don't view Conrails??? I mean really, they are almost extinct- 28 and lowering.
I wish this comment was still accurate, now they are extinct.
Bad ass careers, just need to be very safe. They must make allot of money!
This is Union Pacific. Bailey Yard, North Platte, NB.
No. No it's not. It's right up the road from me.
No it's not. It's in Altoona Pennsylvania.
at the end what does she mean by only fully seirvesed engines can tackel the steep mountains what do they do to the engine
I want to work there, Can i begin tomorrow ? I'll pack a suitcase and then i come right now.
what show is this?
Where can I apply for a job?
Coal Train, indeed.
I liked the show but hated the doofus host.
@ussoldierrail Maybe I should have hosted the series?
you got this from estrem trains
0:36 other rail company, BNSF?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
That dude needs to be in special ed
haseeb
Too bad they could not find an adult to narrate the program instead of this idiot.
Conrail CISR rebuilding of SD 40-2 grab parts there not to go out of services
Do you suppose the workers were laughing at this guy?
probably laughed their asses off talking about him whilst being drunk after work or something
la vidéo existe en français ?

NoahInNormal822 I said the same thing! Did u catch the number on it?
Nope.
dude, i need to get a job there
Same here. I'm going to study mechanical engineering and move to Pennsylvania for that job! Anyone know what the pay is?
building them, i would probably say around $15.00 to start or something.
per hour? I guess that's a good starter job. Do you know what minimum wage is in Pennsylvania?
7.25
ok, it's $9 here
Looks like she just got repainted from Conrail blue when they filmed that! Very sad!
200 tons AND 15 metres up, that might be dangerous to do Because it could crush anything.
God's train set.
Working for GE Transportation in Erie Pa, I have done all those things, and more! Check my channel for videos of our shop!

can this train company make the - military train only -
"can you scratch like in a rap video". ... cringe :/
knowing that this was filmed in the very late 90s (notice the freshly painted dash 8) or early 2000s, that culture was pretty typical for the time
@@SouthJerseyRailfan Nah. It was pretty cringeworthy back then as well.
8381 wasn't repainted until 2008
No No No Go Go Go
Anyone replicate this in Ho or n scale?
And now 703 less own engines

cooleo
He's a conductor for Pan Am Railways, how is that not a real RR? I don't care what railroad you work for, its all the same work. What do you consider a "real" railroad job? Sure he gets a bit excited on the show, but that doesn't make him a moron. A small town guy given a huge opportunity, give him a break.
I'd love to watch more but he makes it look like a rap video
hehehe...
hey edithhead no one asked u about conrail! i like NS and conrail ALL heritage unites paint so stop hating! oh and hi CSXtrainman13
sir please at least i have support and yes i do know all good things must come to an end. But we mostly here are CR fans. Conrail forvever!!!
I agree, EdithHead is very wrong about it. I grew up seeing a lot of Conrail units, and absolutely loved them. Anyone who thinks it's a waste are clearly idiots
Post on you tube and twitter ; operation lifesaver and Northfolk southern ; rail fans ; Eileen Maria Wysocki ; welcome to train safety ; okay watching how they fix locomotives. ; in Juanita plant they said they fix them so good they come from all over the country to get fixed there ; and did you hear how many tons they weigh and a crank picks them up , oh , my they work hard . This is what I , m telling you don, t mess with no train , they win all the time , and even if they derail , you don , t want to do something evil like that , what about poor engineer he don, t deserve to die. , neither do people living around tracks or people in traffic jam. , sometimes you got to have patience , you , ll miserable driving put on some good music , or pray that is the best answer. , how many times god wants to give up on us , we don, t listen so many fights , so much juding name calling finger pointing. ? Do we ever really know anything. ? No , god does , that , s why you should stop look and listen , not just for train , maybe to hear what god has to say once in a while , jesus Northfolk southern and me wants you to remember Christmas is around corner , make it and newyear mean something positive this year. , not negative , okay , thank you Eileen Maria Wysocki thank you Eileen Maria Wysocki 15238 4123989399
+EILEEN WYSOCKI This comment hurt my brain
the CR Blue might have been boring to you but they were a better railroad to work with, around and beside BAR NONE!!! They don't call it Nazi Southern for nothing!!!
Howard, please consult your dictionary before posting...
terrible guy hosting this.
Get your face out of the camera,
shows locomotives only.
