Disney films are just replicas for the classic fairy tales but I can't deny that they started a beautiful era of fantasy. As for ghibli, they are films made from heart of the creator with depth in each of the characters plus wonderful animation to feast on. I say both are great but ghibli moves refine the beauty of storytelling and imagination!

Disney princesses are more then "just needing a man" and having no "self worth". They empower themselves in their own ways and find love along the way too. Ex. Cinderella whole thing is about being kind even through the hardest of times. She just got lucky and found a prince who wants her but she never went out of her way for it.

Most Disney princesses have a sense of self outside of needing a man. For starters Snow White who gets the most shit for needing a man only even talks about the prince 3 times and he’s barely relevant, she’s hardworking, compassionate caring, we see her when she’s vulnerable and scared in the woods and then when she realises she was scaring the animals she overcomes her fears with compassion and empathy. She’s an incredibly kind person and people say she’s not independent but she kind of is? She takes responsibility for cleaning the house in exchange for a room and food because she’s like “their living environment sucks and they need some self help.”, and she develops a friendship with them. But she has flaws in being too naive and trusting to a fault. She’s not some damsel in distress. Then Cinderella also gets a lot of shit for being a damsel, and it’s like this young woman is an abuse victim, hello?! You can’t just expect her to go off on her own in a world that would likely be very hard for her to get room and shelter. Another thing about her is that she’s hardworking and compassionate, she does her job and tries to be optimistic despite her abuse. She wants one night out to go to the ball, (she didn’t even want to meet the prince and when she meets him she’s like “oh wait- I haven’t met the prince lol.”. She also takes agency in trying to break out of her room after being locked up. And she deserves better than being relegated to a gold digger. Aurora, ehh She’s not much of a character because the story isn’t actually focused on her but rather Prince Phillip, but she does have characterisation through her relationships with the animals and the fairies. Ariel has a heck ton of personality and characterisation, she’s very curious, passionate and caring, she has a very big desire to be human and to explore their world and culture. We see her brushing her hair, humming as she happily swims, we see her heart and vulnerable after her dad destroys her all her stuff. She’s got a lot of character and she doesn’t give up her voice for a man, she trades her voice for legs so she can go to the human world, granted it’s in a manipulative deal and partially motivated by her crush + being emotionally hurt by her father. Belle is a very curious woman, she loves reading, she sticks up for herself, she doesn’t take shit from Gaston or the Beast. She is a dreamer though and she wants to find someone who understands her. She doesn’t experience Stockholm syndrome, she’s not much of a prisoner and it’s more of a promise to stay, which she breaks when she’s done putting up with his shit. She only chooses to stay because he needs help after being attacked by wolves after hurting her, then she starts to see his humanity and he has a character arc and she starts liking him. Jasmine, lots of agency and personality, she wants more out of life and wants to be able to make her own choices, so she runs away, meets a cute guy who gets arrested and she thinks he’s dead. She actually tells Aladdin to piss off when he’s being a douche. She’s intelligent and resourceful, we see her upset and in her room, she stands up for herself. She manages to trick Aladdin into confirming that he’s Aladdin. Pocahauntus I’m not going to touch with a ten foot pole because she was a real person and she deserves better than to be represented in that shitty story made up by the gross creepy John Smith. Mulan, do I need say more? She’s great. Tiana, another hardworking woman, just wish she wasn’t a frog for over half the movie, she deserved better. Rapunzel, naive but Kind, headstrong, she’s great. Merida, another headstrong princess, ect.
I think a lot of perceptions about the princesses as weak and pathetic, are based off misogynistic standards that women cannot be strong unless they have masculine traits like physical strength, a lot of the time it is the princess’ determination, perseverance and resilience that saves her, while the prince just finishes the job acting as a plot device. And to say that a woman needing help is bad, is also just wrong, because it’s alright to ask for help regardless of gender. Saying that these women are shallow weak caricatures is simply false, because they have personality, they have motivation and desires, their lives don’t just circle around a man, but they do get their romance because there’s nothing wrong with wanting romance. And a lot of people lack the comprehension skills to look at the characters on a deeper level and propagate the messages that are spread by people who don’t have an accurate understanding of the story such as that “I don’t let my kids watch the little mermaid because She gave up her voice for a man” statement. That’s simply not true and if they’d actually watch the films, people would see that the princesses have much more depth than people give them credit for, and that the general concedes surrounding the films are simply just wrong.

"Damsels in distress, having no sense of self-worth outside of needing a man."
... Did we watch the same movies? Damsels in distress is common, but a lot of the Disney Princesses didn't really have much of a lack of self worth. A couple of examples are Ariel, who didn't originally want a man, but instead wanted to go to the surface to explore as she was fascinated by it. Jasmine never demonstrated needing a man, seeing as any man that went to ask for her hand in marriage was chased off by her. She, instead, wanted to escape the pressures of palace life, and gradually fell in love with Aladdin who she got to know. Mulan went to war to protect her father, and fell in love with the general.
Just because a young woman falls in love, or doesn't display things such as physical strength in battle along the way does not immediately make her weak with a lack of self-worth. Please remember this.

I’m sorry but am I the only one that is super tired of people calling the classical Disney princess movies an example of “damsel in distress” or “no self worth?” like the majority of the classical Disney princess movies they’re very empowering in their way and weren’t really what’s the modern world tells that they are.
Snow White escapes death three times throughout the movie which is very impressive, the first thing that she saw when she escapes was a house and went in the house, no one that a damsel in distress would escape death three times by herself and know what to do when she’s was about to get killed Snow White saw the opportunity and went into the house for her safety.
Cinderella had only one main goal throughout the Movie, She wanted to go to the ball. She did not have the Prince in her mind when she wanted to go to the ball, the prince ended up dancing with her because he found her beautiful not only that she also left the prince During the ball night And also escape her stepmother attempting to hide her from the prince when he was trying to find her
Similar things with Ariel she wanted To be a human/go up to the surface Due to her father's strict rules she was forbidden to go but she did it anyway just to see what it was like when she Was up to the surface The ship Was about to sink and not only that when the prince was drowning Ariel save his Life without even knowing him pretty Much empowerment right there
And what about Belle not only she was not scared by the beast she also took care of him throughout the movie
These Disney princess movies are the definition of empowerment but also falling in love at the same time a lot of people in the modern world don’t understand that falling in love can also be empowering I just don’t like how the modern world sees some female character falling in love and immediately think that she’s a damsel and distress and use the “she doesn’t need a man in her life She’s can be independent” on her just because they don’t like how she’s written
I feel like that female characters can be empowering and falling in love at the same time it’s natural to fall in love with somebody and the Disney princesses art example of them being empowering but also falling in love at the same time

@@NowaboMusic It's not that being protected and rescued is in and of itself a bad thing. It's that it's not something a woman can aspire to do, but something that is done to her by someone else. Everyone wants to accomplish something meaningful with their own two hands. Goal-setting and feelings of success are the keys to self-worth and self-confidence for everyone, regardless of gender.
In stories like this, characters like Aurora or Cinderella are presented to the audience as inherently kind, inherently beautiful, and inherently graceful. These traits make them worthy of being loved and rescued by their respective princes. It could be said that, as role models, they can teach little girls to aspire for those traits, but the characters themselves are never shown working to better themselves. Even though kindness, beauty, and grace are all skills that can be trained and honed, these stories tell the audience that Aurora and Cinderella are naturally and inherently this way from birth, while counterpart villains are naturally and inherently evil. There is no road demonstrated for how to better oneself and become like the heroines. So, according to the example set in these stories, if my worth is determined from what I am inherently from birth, and if my life has the same amount of meaning regardless of whether I'm awake or asleep like Snow White or Sleeping Beauty, what reason do I have to get up in the morning? If my value is only intrinsic to my appearance, what am I supposed to do with my time that feels worthwhile?

And Belle was the one who saved the Beast giving him back his will to fight Gaston and until the point where he started being nice to her she defied him any chance she got

Disney princesses do have self worth, the man was just a bonus. There's no need to bring up disney, put it down to praise Hayao Miyazaki's works. I love both of them, and I think in being feminine and being strong are shown differently(but at the same time kinda the same). For example, in Hayao Miyazaki films, girls are strong and independent, however this doesn't mean that disney princesses aren't strong. Being able to remain kind when you're faced with various trauma inducing situations in and of itself is strong. Being a damsel of distress and being saved by a prince doesn't make you any less strong. I love both Disney and Ghibli films and the messages they send us.

I disagree. Disney princesses aren't lacking a sense of self worth, especially ones like Jasmine. Do a lot of them have a lack of agency? Sure, but so much of the story is how they overcame that. To me, the difference between Ghibli and Disney is what they portray, not who they portray. Disney movies are about grand adventures, and escaping the ordinary. But Ghibli romanticizes that ordinary. It communicates the value of flawed and sometimes unappealing life because it is real. Disney is full escapism while Ghibli is consolidating and loving reality. That's what I think anyway.

Disney Princess movies aren’t about needing a man for example in The Little Mermaid Ariel wanted legs from the very beginning because she is adventurous and wanted to see the human world Eric just came along as a bonus once she met him, in Cinderella all she wanted was a to take a break from her stepmother and stepsisters to go have fun at the ball she wasn’t even thinking about Charming he just happened to come along with it when she met him if all you can see in the princesses is them just being a “ damsel in distress” or “ needing a man to come save them” then I think that says more about you for focusing all the attention on men when the movie is about the princess and anyway when did it become a crime to fall in love you can love a man and still be strong it’s people with thoughts like this that are messing up all of Disney’s remakes you can add more to a character without completely removing who they truly are
TLDR: Rewatch the Disney movies because this take was a complete miss

I disagree with you that Disney princesses have no self-worth. It's a shame that many people nowadays see Disney princesses only as damsels in distress and not as a character who are kind, and caring and didn't change their principles even though they faced cruelty from the world. They have power but not like the girl boss, many people believe it to be true empowerment. Cinderella is my favorite Disney princess, She faced so much cruelty from her stepmother and stepsister, the death of her father and the constant mental and verbal abuse from them would make any person lose their faith in kindness and dwindle their principal. But she had so much faith in her kindness and herself that she never changed anything about her. And the fact that people say Cinderella waited for the prince is false. She never went to the ball because of the prince, she went there just for the ball. It's just that the prince was so impressed by her kindness and beauty that he fell in love with her. And after knowing her true self he still loved her as she is.

Why are disney princesses looked down on now? I get that the main argument is "not everyone wants to be a princess", which is fine. But being a damsel in distress wasn't their only character traits. Mulan saved China, Tiana was a successful entrepreneur and even Ariel had curiosity, even if there was a man involved. While I do prefer Ghibli over Disney, people need to stop painting femininity as being weak or stupid. Each of the disney princesses had great qualities that young girls should pick up too.

A lot of anime was originally imitations of the Disney art style that gradually changed over time. I particularly love how Miyazaki portrays the moments of tenderness and softness that female characters can have while also being strong and assertive. Nausicaa is my favorite example and how she is as much of a strong leader than she is empathetic, caring and soft with her people and even strangers. She courageous and adventurous but also motherly and calm when need be. All of Miyazaki’s characters, female and male, have this complex and more realistic personality to them and Disney should take many manyyyy notes!

    Snow white
    - Her kindness are the one that save her. She is capable of making those around her to do anything to save her.
Imagine if snow white personality is the opposite. The seven dwarf and the huntsman would not careless.
    Cinderella
    - Her strength to not lose hope is the one that get her to escape her predicament
Imagine if she loses hope. She would stuck becoming the slave of her step family
    Ariel
    - Her stubbornness make her save the prince.
Imagine if she is obedient, she would stuck becoming triton political pawn.
    Jasmine
    - She knows that Money, Fame and rank is not everything. Her bravery to go against her father, set the stone for her to be able to marry someone who she loves.
Imagine if she is materialistic. She would ended up marying jafar and agrabah will be in ruin.
    Aurora
    - she is a damsel in distress.
How can a lot of you miss this plotline from the animated movie?
Remember, this is from the princess POV.
But if we see from other POV
    Snow White
The huntsman gamble with his life to save an innocent live.
The 7 dwarf fight an evil witch, tp save someone they barely knew.
The prince, travel a far to try to save a Cursed Woman.
    Cinderella
The prince trying against all odds to find the one he love on almost impossible quest.
Facing scrutiny from the noble and his parent, all for his selfishness to employ the royal force to seek the one who fit the shoes
    Little mermaid
The prince try to find the one he love, but got tricked by the one who he think he is indebted to. Ended up getting dragged on the war of the mermaid
    Aladin
He saved a girl not knowing who she is. Falling so deeply and madly in love that when he get 3 wish, he use it so that she can accept him.
    Sleeping beauty
The prince Fight A DRAGON, to save a princess.
They fight for it and prove they not only dream of being loved back instantly but show the Princess that they will do everything for them.
The story show that Not only the prince save the princess, but the princess also save themselves.
Its not that because the prince come to save them, they become a helpless damsel in distress waiting for the prince. They also work hard to get their happily ever after.

This made me realize: this is actually the first time i actually took notice that any ghibli characters were girls. Like I've always seen them as more their own inviduals with their own personalities instead of the gender they were. They're easy to relate to regardless of which gender you are. I think thats the main difference between ghibli and disney. Ghibli makes the characters realistic and relatable, and the characters are often working class. Disney makes them these idealistic, unreal, flawless models of what the world thinks women should be like, without any true personality of their own, and they always hold impossibly high positions of power and privilege at least by the end of the film. Disney idea of happiness is glory, wealth and power, brought by the help of outside force or birthright. Basically something that we all know to be unattainable for most. Ghibli's idea of happiness is finding your own path in life that makes you personally happy, even if it doesn't bring glory or immense wealth, and working hard for it yourself, and brings attention to the small joys in everyday life. And their interests aren't something dictated by their gender. They're complex, invidual and interesting. And ghibli shows how people can be flawed, and it's ok.
The only disney film that has ever had even nearly the same level of personality was lilo and stitch.

The strong female characs I can think of immediately are belle, tiara, Mulan, rupanzel, elsa, pocahontas even cinderella and her step sis anasthasia if u watched cinderella 2 and 3. Ariel's daughter movie brought many redemptions as now we see more to ariel and her girl's charac that aren't focused in romance. Point is, Disney tried to retcon the damsel in distress callout asap, either thru sequel movies, last 2d animated movies or in next gen cgi era
The straight up damsel in distress one is aurora, even tho I always found her the prettiest 🥲. Snow white and jasmine is less of an offender bc snow white had the Prince coming randomly and in last 5 mins, 90% of her time is her finding family and home outside trad sense, while jasmine had wits and tomboy-ishness (even tho that felt forced to avoid direct damsel in distress troupe).

Could they have done more in the stories? Absolutely. Can we argue that these characters should have gotten more than just a love story line? Of course! But really, the princesses do have character to them. A lot of them do. Hopefully we can get /more/ of it.

Yea, which is why when Disney now panders to with broken woke ideology it’s beyond forced. Any anime fan can obviously realize how grossly political & manipulative it is at heart rather than original or honest.

    "no sense of self worth"
Just because they get rescued doesn't mean they lack self worth. Please grow up

A little sad you didn't acknowledge the difference in the years these movies were released, the og Disney princess movies are from the 30s and 40s, but movies like Kiki and spirited away are 90s/2000s. By that time Disney had also moved into movies with better written female leads like Mulan. Seems a bit unfair to compare the writing of movies 60 years apart when the culture had changed so much in that time. Either way I prefer Ghibli movies, just seemed like a biased perspective.
