Statistically in India, on an average 50% mutual funds beat index fund every year. Primarily this might look like one can choose mutual fund have have a 50-50 chance of doing better than the benchmark.. BUT the key factor is that, that list of 50% mutual funds changes every year... Which means the mutual funds which CONSISTENTLY beat index fund OVER A NUMBER OF YEARS is very very small.. so if you do not like the probablity of finding those very few mutual funds, then investing in index fund insures that you don't underperform the bechmark. So INDEX FUND Investment over a long period of time is the best bet for most of the investors

Yes Sir l, I completely agree that consultants should perform their duties effectively. However, I have a question regarding the prevalent phenomenon where 70-80% of mutual funds fail to outperform benchmarks over 3-5 year periods. Given their expertise, consultants should consistently surpass benchmarks by a significant margin, not just by 1-2%.
Why do consultants continue to invest in companies with negative returns, holding onto losing investments for the long term, instead of reassessing their strategy and reallocating resources to more profitable opportunities?

In this case I disagree, respectfully. There is no way to know if the advisor / fund manager would have done any better. More than 50% of PMS and AIFs are giving below bench mark returns. Also, if a fund manager is unable to beat it in first year, we are told that we should give it time and it is a long term game etc etc. So, we should give this person enough time to see the results.
Fund managers are as clueless as any one else beyond one year horizon. So, assuming most fund managers would have beaten his returns is a fallacy

His approach is fine. He gets happiness in investing by himself. He will learn and do better next time. So, instead of advising to go to an advisor, please inform him about the do's and don'ts of self investing and risks.

It took 10 ( 2007-2017)years for sensex to move from 20k to 30k & only 3 years for it to move from 40k to 80k. But an investor who has patiently done his SIP for the 10 years of underperformance is now reaping in the benefits. Also money deployed before 2014 is now giving u returns. Hence this fallacy of expert giving advice is BS. A simple investment in benchmark Nifty ETF can also take care of ur savings.
