- Taking place on November 3rd, 2018, the Georgia Gravel Grinduro, aka the 3G, was a new event for 2018, set in the Appalachian mountains of Georgia. When people think of Georgia, they usually associate the state with peaches and Atlanta, a former host to the Olympic games in 1996. But mountains?
Starting and finishing in Helen, Georgia, a town replicating a Bavarian alpine town but in the Appalachian mountains, over 100 riders took on the challenge of the Grinduro (108-miles), the Radical (62-miles) and the Scramble (28-miles).
JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew attended the event and opted for the Radical, 62-mile version. Sit back and relax as you see the event from JOM's point of view, front and rear. If you enjoy the colours of Autumn / Fall, you will love this video!

What beautiful place to ride! "It's a good thing no body is taking this type of racing too seriously". I totally agree, and that's why I watch you videos and ride the local events. There is no snobbery. Gravel is for everyone. Thanks JOM, for another great ride review.
Thank you!
Looks brilliant - thank you very much!
Simply stunning scences! So beautiful! :)
with watching these gravel videos you learn new beautiful places in your great country.
Thks for yet another great video. Well done
Thanks!
Good coverage thank you.
Man. The cycling world needs more of this. Your comments and the way the you present the whole edit was perfect. I really enjoyed this and can’t wait to watch another !!!!!
Hello Trevor, thank you! The next video I'm working on is a wheelset review, so it won't be as much fun as this one. However, I've got several ride videos coming... stay tuned!
Epic scenery. Must have been a blast. Love your videos.
Thanks Adam, appreciate the feedback! I LOVED the descending on the course.
My kinda course! Adventurous!
Thanks JOM,...great video! Gave me the feels for my native Georgia. Also love that you're keeping with younger company. I find youth is infectious. Was holding on with baited breath for a glimpse or mini segment on the LiteSpeed. Can't wait to hear your thoughts. Like others I suppose; tossing around the GR Pro vs. Ultimate purchase decision....
Good content my man awesome deep rich voice
Thank you David, appreciate the kind words.
Thnx👍🏼....and good tip at 7:00. Pulse the brakes and float. 👊🏼
Thanks for sharing this
My pleasure! Thanks for chiming in.
48/32 and not low enough... Yet so many brands spec their bikes with 50/34 road cranksets. Will this ever change?
Do you have gpx file or route to share? Would be cool to ride this solo or with small group. TIA
Looks like a neat race
For sure Joel, it is a total blast. If you're within reasonable driving distance, I recommend you check out the 2019 edition.
@@GravelCyclist Not sure where I'll be but I'll certainly keep it on the radar. Thanks for the great video!
Are you planing to publish a note book about gearing and tires choices at different events?
A perfect day to ride a gravel road. I now carry an extra rear derailleur on gravel rides.
Hi James, that is a good idea. I generally mention what I used in my race reports, but not every time. I'm happy to pass along pointers such as this either in a video or page on GravelCyclist.com that I can add to. When I first started attending these events, there was no info out there, or people were staying hush hush about it all.
Would a MTB be quicker on the descents vs gravel bikes? And how about going up if the weights were the same?
At this race, a hardtail MTB would be an advantage. Ditto for the Pisgah race, bigger tyres and suspension have their advantage.
Wow! Beautiful scenery! You should've done the 2018 Sasquatch Ride. It was a great event that was full supported.
I did the 2017 Sasquatch ride but was close to burn out from all of the travel in October. I try to attend as many events as I can but as a bloke with a regular j-o-b and house, etc, I can only do so much! Hopefully I can appear again in 2019.
I didn't do the ride in 2017. They say the ride in 2018 was way better. It was in a new location just north of Macon. I believe they will have it in the same spot in 2019. Hope to see you there.
That is good news. I felt the original course didn't feature a whole lot of dirt and fun stuff, which was a disappointment. Glad to hear Ray listened to feedback from the riders!
cool
Great video, thank you! Is there a map of the route by chance?

I live in the southeast. Where do I find a list of 2019 events like the ones you feature in your videos?
Visit my website, GravelCyclist.com then click the Calendar link.
So if I heard you correctly you recommend 650b over 700c for this course or would you choose 700c with a wider 40-45mm tyre?
I would prefer 650b because of the tricky, rocky climbing, particularly on the second ascent. The smaller wheel size is nimble in those situations. However, at the very least, I would prefer a 700c x 45mm tyre... the Specialized Renegade is a 29'er tyre aka 700c, but that would be a good choice.
Thank you for the quick reply. Have you had a chance to ride the new Salsa Warbird? Any opinions about it?
Afraid not, I have yet to ride that bike. However, I did make a video about the new Salsa Warbird, namely the prototype belonging to Salsa athlete, Jay Petervary. It is here on my channel.
I did see that video! To be honest I’ve seen almost all of your videos! Love the website and fB site as well!
