My mom has this phobia, I never understood it till we met a little person and she started hyperventilating and sweating profusely while almost crying bc he scared her so much and had to go back to the car while I finished our grocery shopping. And the best part about it when I said sorry to the guy he was apparently ecstatic that he and I quote "legit finally scared someone, it doesn't happen often"

The one day we were in a bookstore and I was chatting to her as we browsed, and when I turned to look at her, she was gone. She'd seen a little person in the store and had run for her life! 🤣
There’s a little lady who works at a Walmart I sometimes go to. She came up to give my 5 year old a lollipop, and he backed away super confused at why an adult was the same height as him. She’s a sweet lady. It was a good opportunity to talk to him about the existence of different kinds of people we don’t usually see.

I had acondrophobia. My roommate knew it. He moved a dwarf into our apartment while I was away on vacation, and didn't tell me. I lost my shit at first, but wound up becoming pretty tight with the dude. No more acondrophobia.🤷♂️

Well, probably the fact that the wee fella and my roommate planned it so that he would pop out of the kitchen, without warning, while I was carrying my bags from the cab to my room. I had just finished 36 hours of flights and was mildly delirious with sleep deprivation. I thought I was hallucinating until little dude spoke to me. Then I absolutely freaked out. They thought it was hilarious, and I almost soiled myself. Looking back on it through the lens of 25 years past, that had to be quite the sight. a 6'2" man absolutely falling apart because of a 4'8" man standing in his foyer.

I have this phobia and it actually makes me feel terrible. It makes no sense in my head why it happens. It's like a reaction I cannot stop. My whole family makes fun of me for it and makes me feel like a bad person and trust me I do..but I just can't explain it. I would change it if I could. Especially since my family is full of people who are very very tiny. 4'7", 4'9" etc. So I fight that fear and have met some really great people but I'm not going to pretend it isn't hard.
Have you considered therapy for it? Clinical exposure therapy is very effective for treating phobias. It’s done in a way where the exposures slowly reduce the phobia rather than reinforcing it.

But I cannot even imagine making someone else, who did nothing wrong and is just living their life, having to expose themselves to me so I can not be fearful of them. The idea of that, makes it so much worse in my head 😔. I feel it is my issue and it should not fall on anyone else.
@@breezeh1127 that’s the absolute last phase of it, and it would be someone talking to you and interacting with you. It’s kinder than freaking out every time you see a little person unexpectedly.

@@breezeh1127 It would be much better than torturing yourself internally. That leads to some extremely deep-rooted self-hatred, and - trust me - that is not fun. I do understand the sheer severity of phobias as opposed to fears, as I do have one that I have been attempting to overcome for years, but I know, even better, that internalizing things that reinforce your self-hatred is a gateway to places and mindsets you never want to be in.

It’s like saying you don’t believe in depression because why would someone be unhappy for no reason? It’s an extreme form of irrational fear. A literal disorder. It’s not someone being afraid of the spider in their room. Idk it’s ignorant to dismiss someone’s fears and feelings just because you can’t understand them.
A lot of people don’t understand that phobias are not the same as fears … phobias are deviant, dysfunctional, distressful. I have agoraphobia and I get severe, seizure-like panic attacks if I, for example, am on a crowded bus. That doesn’t mean I hate buses or have a vendetta against them, either. It just triggers my fight or flight mode because it’s a mental disorder, not a choice.
That example sounds more like claustrophobia, agoraphobia is the opposite

@@Lopeped-Cring no. Agoraphobia is the phobia of being in a situation that has anything to do with not being able to escape panic. It’s more of a phobia of fear. This, most commonly, happens to be in crowded public spaces (an “agora” in Ancient Greece). Such as a bus. I struggle to leave my home. But it could be an open, empty space. Or an elevator. Or a driveway where you had that panic attack that one time.
It’s also a diagnosis through a psychiatrist, not by myself. 🙂

You can get exposure therapy to reduce it. It has to be done clinically, though, otherwise the exposures can reinforce the fear rather than weaken it.

Not as easy as one might think.
I've gotten better but am not completely over it.
Now it's more of an inner battle with no noticable (I hope) outward signs.
But I'm still very uncomfortable when I feel I can't walk away, which is what I can now gracefully do.

Lately my phobia has gotten worse than normal since I’ve been journeying more without quarantine being a thing. I can’t even walk across a section of grass without the fear of accidentally agitating a bee.
I found out wasps are also roaming in a specific section of my lawn so I avoid it now at all costs.
It’s not becoming a large thing effecting my life yet but I’m unsure about how to make it better. I’m just too terrified to go anywhere near them no matter how much my parents encourage exposure.
