    More About "Heartless":
Young couple Anna and Gunnar are deeply in love but they live in a society where people are assigned a new spouse by lottery every seven years. Every other person in town is assigned a number. Anna receives a number but Gunnar doesn't, which means they have a chance of being matched together again. When the lottery starts, Gunnar is matched with a young man named Friðrik who is starting his first relationship. Anna is matched with the older Brynjolfur. "Training week" starts where Anna and Gunnar have to teach their new spouses how to love. This proves very difficult to Gunnar who isn't able commit to his new relationship with Friðrik. He runs away and tries to get Anna to join him before the townspeople catch him. The town's priestess gives both of them an ultimatum: Commit to the new relationship or spend seven years in a gigantic mythical egg. Much to Gunnar's horror, Anna agrees to commit to her relationship with Brynjólfur. Gunnar however, cannot accept these terms, rejects a relationship with Friðrik and decides to spend seven years in the horrible egg.

It's because men are able to love selflessly and unconditionally. Most women are not. Sure, there are exceptions, but the majority of women are driven by hypergamy. When Anna compared the two situations that her choice would bring about, she chose the one that she felt would offer her a better deal. That and the pressure that she felt from her mother and pseudo father to procreate, and knowing that she is approaching the wall, the choice while difficult, was clear. Gunnar will be fine. Perhaps next time he will find himself a woman that actually means the words that were spoken at 1:11

Parallels to divorce and remarriage. You see the one you loved with someone new. New portrait. New love. Even if it's awkward, and the intimacy over time is forced into a sudden new relationship. And the egg is being on the outside of that. Not diving into a new relationship. Sitting in the pain of the breakup. Or staying in the marriage.

A world in which everyone is *gender fluid* --- where *family* is not deemed important, and where *feelings/emotions* or *loyalty* have no meaning. Yea, thanks, but I wouldnt want to exist in such a society --- let alone bring children into it. Sure, life revolves in *seven year cycles* --- but what happens if you love the other person and you wish to remain w/ them *forever* ???
Despite the overall feel that this seems like a *peaceful utopia* --- it evokes sinister undertones of *totalitarianism* .
Very well written and brilliant concept. The acting was stellar ---- you feel the emotions of each character, even when they come off as apathetic + detached.

I'm not sure what the practical reasons for making people switch up partners every seven years would be - for those who are unhappy, yes it would definitely work, but I don't think it would serve any community to break up happy couples. One of the candidates for the switch also seemed to be a father who then had his child taken away from him, so don't really understand that and don't really understand the status of children in this society i.e. who do they 'belong' to and who takes care of them??. Also, I think forcing people who are either heterosexual or homosexual or other to enter into relationships with people of a gender they do not have any attraction to also makes absolutely no sense - I can't see that it would work at all.

There is one practical reason why such a society would make sense. If humanity were to die out, such a system - the exchange of partners every 7 years, ending with the birth of a child - would provide two benefits: 1. Rapid reconstruction of the human population, 2. Ensuring maximum genetic diversity in a small society.
But one question remains - what is the point of rebuilding humanity without rebuilding its greatest asset?

I don't think it's that Anna wanted nothing to with Gunnar, since it's obvious that she cared for him and enjoyed his company, but rather her hypergamous nature made it easier for her to abandon him, and choose the better deal. Women are simply wired differently than men are and once you understand this the hurt that you feel, as a man that gets abandoned by the woman that he loves, does not hurt near as badly. Women just simply can't help but follow their biological programming.

@@redpillaware5101 I didn't say she didn't enjoy her time with Gunnar. Its clear that she no longer wanted anything to do with him though. If she did, she would have entered the egg with him. @@MacandArney You are looking at the decision Anna made from a mans perspective. Just because Anna is in thrall to her hypergamous nature doesn't necessarily mean she want's nothing to do with Gunnar. Men can easily make decisions based on unconditional love, regardless of consequence. It's this very thing that women rely on whilst trying to find themselves someone that will provide. Women do not make their decisions the way men do. She chose what she thought was the better deal because that matters more than feelings. Men love unconditionally. Most women do not.

With me not understanding plot it seemed like she rejected going with her lover.
It still is that, but if she knows the egg would change her personality there is a different perspective possible.
Perhaps she refused to enter the egg because she feared becoming a different woman...to no longer be in love with him.
Such would be very sad because when he returned he would no longer love her, but she'd still love who he used to be.

The movie is frankly delusional, how can this be, why? What is the point of playing the spouses in the lottery? It makes no sense. And then, any idiotic ban can be bypassed, a couple of bribes to the right people and the right numbers will miraculously fall out. The situation when one of the pair who swore love backs out and pitifully bleats "I am sorry" is not unusual. I felt bad for the guy, betrayal always hurts. I would have added a few shots of anna's karmic payback for her betrayal and lies
