3 Year Timelapse - Fiero Restoration | Abandoned for 20 Years

  • Restoring this 1985 Pontiac Fiero was a wild and crazy journey. This was my first time ever undertaking a project car. I did a lot of things not in the best order and made lots of mistakes, but after three years I persevered! I fully refurbished the fuel system, drivetrain, suspension, interior, bodywork, and most importantly: the pop-up headlights.

The fact that you rebuilt almost every component instead of throwing parts and money at it, makes this one of the best restorations on you tube. By a long shot. Nicely done!

By far the best restoration I've seen over all these years on CZcams. What impressed me was that you knew everything, from mechanics and bodywork, to the electronics of the cassette player.
And unlike the other restoration channels, you restore parts as much as possible, rather than just swapping like everyone else (who does what's easy rather than what's right).
    It was worth every minute.

Exactly my thoughts. How did this dude learn all of those different skills. I see so many restorations where the body gets fixed & nothing else because that's all that guy knows, so he sells it to a drive train & suspension guy, who them sells it to an interior guy who finishes it. Not necessarily in that order, but you get the idea. They can only do their part. No shame in that, but that's ebay is amazing about this resto.

You can absolutely tell that this was a project of love. Even after it's complete, to go back through every video made over the last three years just to put together what essentially is a 42 minute highlights reel really puts into perspective that this was a passion project. One that we are all upset to see end, but one that ended complete. Thank you for a hell of a series, Ronald.

WoW…. So great to see younger generation bringing back to life a part of my generations past. Excellent Job Guys….
I was 17 and went to the Pontiac dealer shop where we bought all of my families cars from through the years. My parents went out of town with their friends and I needed an oil change on my Fire Chicken (Trans-am)and I always waited there while they did it. So this day I’m walking around the dealership looking at the new Fire Chickens (Trans-am)and this Salesperson recognized me from my family’s prior purchases and approaches me. Asking if I’m ready to trade in for a new one. I hadn’t thought about the adult things behind purchasing a new car, I was 17, lol… I told him my parents were outta town and he told me “No Problem” and that he knew my parents and I could simply pick one and drive it home and when my parents got back in town he’d contact them to gather the info. I told him to show me what he’s got, lmao… I had my heart set on a 1988 GTA, the 1987’s didn’t not have T-Tops and they only came in automatic transmissions… Well, my buddy got one for his Birthday and it was beautiful, had T-tops, 5-speed, and a digital dash… It made my 1987 look prehistoric…. Mine seemed faster cause I’d whoop him every-time… I always thought it was the driver and he just couldn’t grasp the stick shift/clutch gig… Nope… The automatics had a 5.7liter 350 and all the 1988’s with 5-speeds and T-tops were a 305 engine… This is why my buddy couldn’t keep up with me…
As I walked on the lot I saw this yellow car… it was a Formula Fiero with sunroof, 5-speed, and a 6 cylinder engine… I drove it home and loved it… I knew that my Mom was gonna flip her shit when she found out what I’d done… So I knew I had to put some miles on it so they couldn’t take it back, lmao… So that day, on a Saturday, I drove up the east coast all along the beach putting 500 miles on it that day… I kept it for several years and all I ever did to it was oil changes, brakes once, and a couple sets of tires, no shit… it ran perfect and was never a problem…. It was an Awesome car….
    🏆💯👊🏼💙

Can't wait to see what's next. The capability you have in that barn is outrageous. You can paint in a "booth", powdercoat, electrolysis rust removal, sand blasting, there's a lift, and a sweet little donkey to help when you accidentally knock a body panel off the sawhorses. Love it!

    • @Amberscion
      @Amberscion Před 3 lety +2

Not to mention all of the very real skills he picked up while doing all of these things. I picked up a decent set of mechanics skills while working on my own beaters as a young man. Buying the parts and tools was always cheaper than paying someone to do it for me. And I never got anywhere near the wide range of tasks that Ronald did during this restoration.
Some of the fairly expensive tools were donated or possibly loaned. I've asked but don't recall seeing any answer as to whether he had to return any of them.
But if he did have to return some, now that he is a CZcams millionaire I guess he can replace them if he really needs esoteric capabilities such as electrolytic rust removal in the future. Or I guess he could just follow some of the CZcams videos on how to do that with a tank of chemicals and a spare car battery. :-D

This brings back memories of my first car. Dad bought it for me on my 15th B-day. A 1968 1/2 Road Runner. Looked like it was literally painted with a broom this baby blue nasty color, interior looked like someone let a bobcat loose in it for a week, the old 383 burned more oil than gas... He paid... $250.00 for it in 1985. Yeah, it was that bad...
I had saved about $4,000 working on farms, growing my own cucumbers for the pickle factory etc and he told me "Son, you have a cousin who lives not far with a body shop and all the tools you'll need to make it look new again, all you gotta do is learn and I can't think of any better way." I spent every day I could over there, even slept in the garage a few times. My cousin would show me what and how to do it, and I did it. Both rear quarters were I shit you not were constructed from chicken wire and paper-mache. I cut the sheet metal from some old school lockers, formed them and welded them in place. I did it all inside and out, piece by piece and 90% of it by myself in that year. After final paint it looked incredible! Last piece to the puzzle was the tired engine. I started to rebuild it when fortune via a local junkyard I frequented called and told me to come look at something... It was a 1969 Charger T/A with a 426 Hemi rear ended by an 18 wheeler and totaled. I bought that Hemi and the 4 speed manual trans for $1200.00, did freshen up and 2 weeks later it was purring in my Road Runner.
There is no single feeling I can describe greater than seeing what your 2 hands are capable of after so much time and effort to make something that most see as junk into the envy of all your peers. Good work here, thanks for sharing.

Absolutely loved the restoration and attention to detail. The Fiero was my dream car back in the 1980s. It came out the year I graduated so it was special to me. I finally ended up with a 1984 white base model in 1992. After a couple years I moved on, but bought a 1984 SE in red out of a salvage yard in 2003. This one got a full tilt resto-mod with upgraded tires, wheels, brakes and interior. I did not have the time or skill set to do what they did to the one in this video, so I ended up spending about $20k having it restored. Loved it until another Fiero enthusiast in our car club persuaded me to sell it to him. Beautiful work you did in restoring this classic piece of automotive history and a huge salute from a lifelong Fiero fan.

The popularity of Fieros is at an all time high now. They aged very very well. I mean after you restore it. It was an amazing design at the time and still today. Toyota MR2s are the same. There is an orange Fiero around here but its in original condition, less than good condition. But looks amazing from a distance :)
I had a black Ford Probe that also had flip up lights. I lovvved that car! Really nice clutch, handling was amazing. Large trunk for snowboards. Not the quicker GT version but for me it was good enough. Only looked masculine in black. My stepbro sold it to me in mint condition. He got the Ford family discount and bought it but he was never the sporty car kinda guy. I miss the car still.
