The car runs the air conditioning system to cool the liquid that circulates around the battery pack. But it's not just the battery pack that it cools it's also the electronics under the hood that handle the current from the charger to the car. seems a bit on the noisy side to me but I've never heard one in person. The whining sound that you hear increasing and decreasing in pitch is probably the compressor for the air conditioning system. It is a variable speed compressor that will go faster and slower depending upon demand

It can actually be pretty loud. If I run the AC when the car is hot you can slightly hear it while inside.

I have a 2021 and it has done this twice this year. Both times it was when i plugged it in right after getting home from work on 95 degree days. It freaked me out big time. I'm glad to know its normal.

Wow, I just ordered a bolt EUV and I didn't know it could make this amount of noise while charging. If I have it parked inside a garage attached to the home, do you think I'd be able to hear it from inside the house? Could it possibly wake you up and disturb sleep? Luckily all the bedrooms in my house are opposite from the garage, but it still makes me wonder.

@@petef.4361 only heard it a couple of times on 18000 Kilometers or 11184 miles. Always at end of a full charge. Pull plug sound goes away immediately.

@@petef.4361 No, you would absolutely not hear this noise in the house. Not even through the door going to the garage. EVs are nearly silent while charging .

Normal. Same with my 2019 especially on a hot day

Our cars can definitely make astonishing noises sometimes. Don’t worry too much. :-)

That’s right. Have you ever heard the noise new cars make when activating the parking brakes ? Sounds like a spaceship docking.

Systems maintaining battery temp. BMW i3, Fiat 500e (electric) do this. It sounds a little like something's broken, but it's normal. Battery may be warmer after you've just been driving, you can let it cool down before you plug-in, but it's not necessary. Batteries put off heat when outputting energy (driving) or charging.

Thanks for shining a light on worrisome issues Bolt owners are experiencing. When I post polite critical comments on other Chevy EV videos, they are typically deleted, so you're obviously not on their payroll. Bought a 2018 new, was denied a buy-back, so we paid Chevy more $ for 2021 to get out of the scary 2018-2020 battery issues. Within WEEKS learned ALL Bolts would need battery replacement. Both the 18 and 21 make the jet engine fan noise whenever charging in hot weather, which is very disconcerting. People on this string call it "normal" but is there official Chevy confirmation that it is? We're stuck with the car since resale has tanked. Have waited 1.5 yrs for new battery and dealer that took our 2018 has, too. Can't do the 90% range cap and not go below 70 mls due to long commute in winter temps. After a bunch of critical posts I recently made, Chevy miraculously has a battery for me now so will get that in 10 days. Today is cold and hearing popcorn/percolator sounds if plugged in - dealer can't say by phone if it's safe to charge, would have to drive an hour there. So, surfing for answers brought me here. Also just learned of a new fire-related recall on Bolts related to seatbelt pretensioner in wrecks igniting the carpet, but dealer doesn't know when part will be avail. The early adopter tax has not been enjoyable. I believe their Ultium is LG, too, so...

Uff, that sounds rough. I have both Tesla and Chevy Bolt and it’s a night and day experience. Tesla being the best in my humble of opinion. But I did get the battery replacement on the bolt due to the recall. I have had a good experience with the bolt except for the two times the electrify America charger broke the car somehow. I had to tow the car twice because of this electrify America issue. I drive the bolt a lot and I am happy with it. I wish it had more comfortable seats.

  • @JasmineJimmerson-ho8rn

Is this to condition the battery for hot weather?

Whoa! I drove my Chevy bolt today for about 150 miles and immediately plugged in when I got home. I came back outside about five hours later. It was pretty much charge back up to full, but was making that awful sound just like in this video. I totally freaked.
