On some level I do believe there is some connection to merit, talent and ability but not all. It seems as though that's why he's saying do it yourself because the time we are in you can. Dedication, merit, talent and ability still play a major role,but not all in this success as well.

I think it's just not what you want to hear. It's good advice for some, and not for others. He said he was making like 30-40k as an actor, which for some is fine as long as they are doing what they love, but for other that's a struggle. We like to romanticize the person who doesn't take the "safe route" and plunges his life head first towards the goal, but there is nothing wrong with compromising. Especially if you're like this guy, who moved to LA and gave it his all for a a while, eventually deciding he needed more income to provide for his family. But I think you're right you have the best chance to "make it" in the big leagues if you go all in, but you're also likely going to struggle for an indefinite amount of time. Which is why this is such an interesting/polarizing/reoccurring question that all artists have an inner debate to varying degrees. To say he's not an artist though is absurd though. He's 34, actively directing/making a bunch of stuff, finished feature length films and got his vision made (they may not be good or profitable, no idea), but dude is definitely an artist for good or for bad.
@johnnyb5534 yeah I think there's diminishing returns at a certain point when it comes to how much effort you put in. Not going all in may take you from from 2% to a 1.2%, but you still got skin in the game and all you need is a single opportunity to go right. "Making it" is the least calculable goal ever; youre supposed to get yourself to a professional level of competence and just put yourself out there and from there I think it's an incredibly good decision to balance out everything else in your life.
