  • Decades after the battle the men who fought at Gettysburg commemorated that experienced by preserving the battlefield itself and placing monuments to their regiments on that battlefield. In 1886 the survivors of the 22nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry erected a granite marker on Sickles Ave near the Rose (farm) Woods.
By the end of the battle the 22nd had suffered 30% casualties 15 killed and 25 wounded. The closest we can come to understanding what july 2nd 1863 was like (if at all) is thru the words of Robert Carter who was in the thick of the fighting.
