Should you buy Horizon Forbidden West in 2023?
Let me know if you’ve played Horizon Forbidden West yet and if so, what do you think of it? If you've not played it yet though, I definitely recommend it. For me Zero Dawn still stands a few inches taller than Forbidden West overall but a more than worthy sequel non the less.

R.I.P Lance Reddick.
Indeed
Seriously, that one hit hard. I'm a big fan of his. Of course, The Wire will make you a big fan of every single person in the whole show…
As much as I hated Sylens, he was perfect for the role, gonna miss him.
Seriously, what a incredible presence on screen, I am so sad we won't see him again.
I think that horizon forbidden west is definitely a gameplay improvement but doesn't beat the previous game in terms of story.
I agree ,the story is just so amazing ,and parts of it really touched me .
This is just opinion but I actually wish these games just didn’t have a story lmao, I feel like why try to justify why I’m hunting robot dinosaurs with a bow and arrow just lemme turn my brain off and hunt
The gameplay is just top notch, i keep coming back to it even after 200 hours and two playthrough just to take down a few machines, nothing comes even close to it when it comes to the feel of battle once you fully master it.
The story was the only dissapointing part for me as well as the fact that we got the ability to fly basically for endgame on first playthrough, the game felt amazing on new game plus with being able to take to the skies right away, but even then, i just literally walked through the world so much because its just that well designed and interesting to explore.
That was my only gripe - having to wait til the story is almost over to get the Sunwing override. But agree the game is a wonderful place to just go around and explore and hunt and do every side mission even after the story is done.
Zero Dawn's gameplay was simple, yet really thrilling. Besides it being being a gorgeous game to play. The story and the lore took time to grow on you. But, when it really opened, up... it was great. So fascinating. As for Forbidden West, the combat is still super fun. Overcomplicated at times, but really enjoyable. The story wasn't nearly as good. The second half it does get more fascinating. But it relies on the cliches of "remake the world in their own image", "esacpe from another rogue AI that destroyed their land", and "killing off a character that had not nearly enough time to develop" far too easily. And the secondary antagonists are pretty one note. While they do add to the background of the game. Literally you can take the backstory of the first game - the old world and the AIs - copy and paste their stories and flip them around. It relies on that so much that it weakens the story. Not to mention the game juggles three antagonists. That was unecessary. As a writer, I would have rewritten parts of it. Not a "bad' story; it has some good moments. Overall a fractured story with pacing issues, and uses cliches easily.
This game is beautiful and mindblowing! Character animation and models, creature design, and the world! It’s on another level and set new standards for what video games can achieve!
This series and specifically this game is amazing. Definitely part of my top 3 of all time! Enjoyed the video as well.
I'm playing Horizon forbidden west right now and it's an absolutely amazing experience the dutch know how to make good games
Ok so I JUST started playing this game about a month ago and I’m hooked. I just beat the main story yesterday and I don’t think I’ve done half of what’s out there, this game this world is massive and beautiful. I just downloaded Burning Shores dlc and will start that shortly. But my fav thing to now is just get a Sunwing and fly around the map, and sometimes hop off glide down and kill a ravager for no reason lol flying made this game infinitely better. Looking forward to Horizon 3.
the gameplay, art, visuals and open world is amazing. I just hated the fact that it took me forever to upgrade purple and legendary armor/weapons. And the main quests happened so fast that i was like “bruh this cant be the ending already?” And i hated the fact that we got the sunwing near the ending. I got to enjoy it for so little and seeing the world flying was so differently better. I give it a 8/10
As a diehard Souls fan, I actually preferred Forbidden West over Elden Ring.
Thats insane sorry

Love the video and love that you don’t have a video full of ads every 60 seconds!
Great review for 2023 i loved both games but i agree on many mechanic's in FW being way better.
Horizon Forbidden West is amazing. The graphics are stunning , the open world is gigantic and a joy to explore, it’s my personal showcase game for the PS5’s graphics. 👏👏👏👏 Still enjoy exploring the open world after getting the platinum, it’s the type of game you can explore the world for hours in
I just keep coming back to this game over and over. Apart from the melee combat, it’s pretty close to a perfect game in my eyes.
To people considering to try the game and see so many comments about the story being "okay", you have to keep in mind that ZD had the advantage of being a unique and original concept combining the feel of past and future in a surprising way. This time around, it didn't have that advantage of surprise, we already knew why the world is this way, we were familiar with the setting. Even so, there were so many moments in FW's story where I was mind blown. It's a perfectly executed story that finds other ways to keep players interested, and introduce twists and reveals, don't you worry. And if you do end up playing it, which I think you should, don't sleep on the side missions! They have a lot of depth and overarching plots that feel like main ones both in length and in quality. For those that HAVE played the game, what were your favorite moments? [Slight spoilers] Personally I loved the first long chat with Beta, about how she was treated, Tilda and the paintings, and the fact that we're not talking about descendants. And also the whole Faro/Gemini questline was amazing.🤠
This was an awesome game still at least to me, zero dawn was still better, but I definitely will be purchasing the pc port ounce it comes out (I switched to pc recently but still play on my ps5 since my friends and I share games so I use my ps5 to play and test games that haven't been ported to pc yet to see if I'm interested I'm the pc port, and I for sure am getting and trying this on pc when it comes over
In this game I really think they took a note from Ghost of Tsushima as far as the graphics. The reflections, the grass, the trees, the sunset. For some reason I like ghost of tsushima a little bit better with the graphics, but I do see a lot of similarities
It’s also because with Zero Dawn, Guerilla made it on a whole new engine: the Decima engine.
Zero Dawn was the first game to use it, & Forbidden West was going to be an improvement over it after Guerilla fully understood how the engine worked, especially since Kojima also used it for Death Stranding.
I've finished Horizon forbidden west recently, and wow, was I blew away.
It was one of my most anticipated games for 2022, and the fact that I finished it very quickly is a testament to how good it is.
However, it's not without its issues. Let's start with the positives. The combat system is very improved, and the additions of the spears are very welcomed for me. The new mechanics literally improved everything that I thought about the series. I couldn't go without them anymore. The world is pretty huge and beautiful, even on PS4.
However, where I have critiques is with the story because I don't know what happened at the end. I thought it was very rushed for some reason, and I do think that if they had more time, the game would have been a 9.5 out of 10.
Still, it's an outstanding game, and I enjoyed every bit of it.
I'm late to the Horizon party. I just started playing Zero Dawn + Frozen Wilds on the PS5 in March 2023 and I'm over 100 hours in and I can't wait to finish it so I can start playing Forbidden West. Got both games free from Playstation Plus. Anyway, thanks for the video.
Forbidden West is gloriousss
I have about 250 hours in the game and have never once used a vertical trap.
Also to the point about audio, they still haven't fixed the bug where you lose parts of it and either characters, the music or even weapon effects go silent. It was a bug in the original, it's present in the other game with the Decima engine - Death Stranding, and it's even more pronounced in Forbidden West.
I've never had this glitched or even noticed in either game
I loved the first one, I will play this one once it comes out for the PC. Great review as usual Moz
Thanks man!!
Bro is gonna play this one when probably the next Horizon releases 😂
Not quite, on pc next week!
Just completed the game. great story, art work, game play, etc.
this is still on the top of my list in terms of next level gaming I’ll never get over that first flight on the sunwing
damn it everyone spoiled it for me. Im just barely started the game.
@@LexusJDM350 I’m sorry 😭 I got it spoiled myself tho on twitter at launch it didn’t hurt the experience for me tho
I didn't like HFW as much as I thought I would and it's hard to put my finger on why. I think it just tries too hard.
Yes that!
I like how simple the first one was. This one tries to do to much and it's honestly rhe same thing but this time there's not much mystery or anything else of intrigue
Aloy just seems to have a bad attitude about everything... that is a big turn off
This!! I loved Zero Dawn, its one of the few games I platinumed but Forbidden West just genuinely bored me. Theres too much to do to hold my attention. The original hit a sweet spot that they just blew past in this game for me.
@@es_three232 and the original also didnt hold me either, like once it hit the second stage ion the desert i quit because it was a massive difficulty spike
youre pretty much spot on with everything. I will say i played horizon on PC and only experience pop in maybe twice, and it being something small like a single boulder popping in, in the distance
My huge issue with this game is the inventory. It's ridiculous. The amount of stuff you need to continually complie and craft into ammo. It just felt way less streamlined from Zero Dawn to the point it just felt clutterd now. I loved Zero Dawn but once the Zenniths showed up the story lost me 😂.
I got it for 20eur 6 months after release (ps4 version), played a bit and it landed on a shelf.
I thought Zero Dawn was very good. I simply liked the game play loop in which we developed the character into killing machine.
But here again we have a very slow start, when the game opens up a bit it gets a bit better but again there is this push towards the main missions (at least at the beginning). What put me off is that Aloy articulates each and every thought out loud.
So we have at the beginning a tower to climb, instead of let player do this in their own pace Aloy after 15 seconds tells player what to do. What is a point of this? Sure if some players do not want to spent time on figuring it out give a hint system, but for others let them play and figure out things on their own. Or at least give the option to turn of this annoying hints.
So back to the tower to climb instead of being a fun traversal puzzle like element it was more like QTE where instead of button prompts player is informed what do next. This one took a lot of enjoyment from the game for me. It is one thing if character mention something like “should I do (main mission name) or maybe (side mission name)” to remind the player about what are some goals of the game. But character constantly talking about what to do now is just annoying and takes some of the control from player.
I have a few games I want to finish first but I will play Forbidden West this year, that is the plan at least.
I got this last year with my ps5 and at first I was sorta negative towards it although I did play through it once. Well recently I restarted a new playthru and I like it way more now!
Gameplay 10/10
Graphics 10/10
Combat 10/10
Story & narrative 1/10
This is my personal experience.
Story is at least 6/10 nothing ever gets 1/10 even worst stories get at least 3/10
Waiting for them to release the physical pack that includes DLC.
I’ve played the game for around 24 hours now and I’m at 52% such a good game but it does take forever to kill the mechs
Yes this is fantastic game, the story mid but everything else is awesome. I loved this game.
You have about 50% content to do with dlc there was an epilogue with Sylens after the credits. It leads into the third installment
this game is finally getting released on a platform that matters
I love HZD i did so many NG+ because i really enjoyed the simplicity of it, FW is pretty cool i just started playing it and well the combat it feels different for me, only thing i dont really like is that stamina bar but other than that the game is fun but still i love HZD more tbh
Agreed it has alot of weapon types, and melee is useless as always. But the bows etc don't feel different compared to HZD. Combat feels the same, I'd say improved.
Forbidden West is absolutely amazing but I’m struggling with the combat - it feels over-tuned. I don’t remember getting one-shotted this much in HZD. Knocking off parts takes far longer and enemies take forever to put down. I’m playing Wo Long now, too, and that game’s a cakewalk compared to this.
It does take some getting used to. I think what they try to do with this game is knocking off the parts doesn't guarantee you an easy victory. But to your credit, the enemies are tough as it is.
But you're right about the damage. I'm upgrading outfits I'm finding new ones and upgrading those too and the enemies just do a ton of damage. I'm only about halfway through it though
Personally I found HFW way more forgiving than HZD. I found it was a necessaty to have the Weaver Armor (Blocks any one Hit and recovery after a certain time) in HZD in Ultrahard difficulty as everything was just a one shot, while in HFW (also on Ultrahard) you would still be able to tank multiple hits as the game lets you top off your health bar over the max HP amount with potions and maschines felt like they dealt less damage in general. Furthermore health berries are more abundant and you can have 3 times the amount than in HZD.
Though I must say that the hitboxes in HZD felt more natural. In HFW the machines were constantly sliding (no movement animations Just sliding) towards your position when you already dodged twice over out of their visually indicated Attack range.
This was a really well done review. I just picked this up today, PS4 version on sale with free PS5 upgrade. Cheers!
I downloaded for free ya nerd
Yes just buy it.
Played this twice on the PS5, can't wait to give it another go on the PC on March 21. And yes, this looked beautiful on the PS5, it might be one of those games where I would be fine using the Original graphics setting that matches PlayStation graphics. Fingers crossed the port is well done, because I can see this game being pretty heavy given its graphical fidelity.
Yes you should buy it! Masterpiece game ❤🏹
It’s free
@@issasavage1 it wasn’t free when I bought it. I’m a true fan of the franchise so I bought it day one! 😎
First one is one of my all time favourite.Cant wait to play this one in my ps5 for free in a few days when it comes to extra.
Same.. comes out tomorrow!
Just got done with this game. Top 3 games I have played on PS5. Take your time and get into it. It might be because I sit in a bean bag chair very close to a 77” 4K HDR tv when I play so it feels like I am there. Beautiful game, awesome story, so much fun to play.
top 1 and 2?
The bounce off is the key to melee in this game. Trust me. On hard mode im taking down huge creatures 6 levels above me using melee
I finished zero Dawn. I was really enjoying the start of the game. By the end I pretty much lost interest. That was of how woke it become for the end. I'm not against strong female characters or any of that. But when that's all the game pushes and how evil the male characters are. I probably won't waste any money or time on the 2nd
Get a grip lol you 'anti-woke' weirdos are the biggest cry babies out there. It's okay macho man, try not to be such a sensitive snowflake x
Subbed, awesome review man, started this game a year ago, just got a PS5, gonna get thenfree upgrade and play it again, from the beginning, time to hunt down some robot dinosaurs! 💯😃 🦕
Yo pal, your work is good, concise but entertaining, with great production value. Sad to see you seem to be out of the youtube field, hope you have a nice time wherever it is, I really enjoyed this video so I thought I'd write something cheerful.
(sigh) another one I need to get back to. Currently playing (and loving) Dying Light but my PSVR2 is coming out next week so Forbidden West will have to wait!
There could be worse problems than a backlog of decent games to get to but I know the frustration!
@@Respawnedgaming its a good thing especially with how dry the industry has been this year
I really liked the first game, Aloy is like a Disney Princess on an adventure and I love that. I was on the fence about whether or not to wait for this but you make it sound like it's worth picking up tomorrow.
She’s nothing like a Disney princess . What the heck ?
@@Smoothgrooves She's intelligent, brave, helps everyone she meets, tames monsters, charms everyone who meets her, uses her resources cleverly to overcome her problems/has that constant "I can overcome anything if I just try" attitude - the only thing she doesn't do is sing.
Idk I like the first one better so far… level 20 atm. It’s not flowing right or something. And I appreciate the fact that they threw every possible idea into this game, it’s over tedious for no reason. Traps and trips are a lot of work for no real reward. During a fight it’s either triple notch arrows or heavy spear attacks for the win. Plants are stuck under things and you can’t get them. There’s a trillion freakin rocks everywhere, just annoying. The first one you could do things out of order with no real problem but now it jacks things up. I’m slowly falling out of love with it. Contracts? No thanks.. wildlife is less fun to hunt imo. Battles now entail everything in a 50 mile radius to gang bang you.
It’s just got me more annoyed than the first one.
That's very untrue. Everything you state is either already there in ZD or was changed for a reason. Plants under the ground and glitches were very present in ZD, wildlife hunting was never really fun and is actually slightly better in FW, the battles entail surrounding enemies depending on the difficulty level just like in ZD.
All weapons (including traps, tripcasters, etc.) were nerfed and are harder to use but this balances the gameplay by pushing the players into using most of their arsenal, while in ZD you could quickly settle on one weapon by stocking it with ammo or placing 50 tripwires to kill any machine instantly. It feels frustrating at first, but when you start to understand how everything can work together it feels great. The melee system is also very much improved.
I understand that you don't like the game or that you like ZD better and that's fine, but it's probably because the love you felt for the first game was not very rational and you're seeing it better as it really was (and I loved the hell out of that game aswell lol). I felt the same at first but if you take some time to think about everything, you'll see that FW is pretty impressive.
@@theodomon2774 Ok, ok ok, you win. I'm level 50 and 76% complete now. Probably in my top 5 games of all time lol. I guess you're right and I see what you mean, coming right from ZD into this one. Idk what it was about this one starting off though, I guess I am not a true diehard when it comes to the lore/story and even though I have done all the errands and scrap contracts, ruins, black boxes etc etc. I found myself just clicking through the story as fast as possible after most of the main story fell into place. I am really excited for the dlc and look forward to what they have added or removed. After all that, I suppose then it comes down to personal preference but it's still a strong 9.5 I shouldn't have been so harsh after only being level 20. Thanks!
@@roguerage9328 It's fine, I just wanted to point some things out that made me feel the same way aswell at first. I think I enjoyed ZD better overall but it's probably more because I didn't expect anything from it and was blown away by everything.
3:24 "Thunderbastard" is what I call last night's poop.
5:44 "Gingerbush" is what I call Aloy. Funny.
It looks unbelievabe on Ps 4 Pro. Almost next gen
Love this game finally have a 4k to so I am going back in dude!got the game when I bought my ps5 but now I know what everyone is going on about! Lol
If you enjoy games about incompetent evil men being saved and beaten by girlboss wamen repeatedly, play horizon 1 2 and 3. 3 hasnt released yet but when it does, its going to be more of the same
Maybe when 3 comes out they will surprise us by saying she has been a black man all along.
Enjoyed your video. I am totally blow away by these games. Forbidden west on PlayStation 5 is so beautiful. Aloy is a beautiful character and the graphics and cut scenes are very impressive. But for me it's the movement of the main character, she is so easy to control and the bow is so beautiful to lock on and hit the target. Yes Forbidden west is a wonderful game experience. Steve 👍
Short answere: Yes! If you played HZ New Dawn and loved it then you have to play this game, it is basically an improved version with more stuff
My brain is still works after 3 decades of gaming😂😂😂😂 I feel your pain brother.
It depends what type of gamer you are. This game is not for the casual gamer in the slightest but the hardcore.
This game will require you to invest thoroughly in its story and lore to appreciate it. The conbat is fun but the story for me was incredibly lack luster to the point i had to for myself through the last third of the game. This game would've been a hubdred times better if it just trimmed the fat but for some thats just more of a reason to dive in.
Hard to understand if he was being serious or beating the game to the ground in what's being said.
The DLC was an absolute chore to get through, the writing was the worst this franchise has ever seen. They went so woke that even Aloy is intolerable now. In the first installment she was great, but don't even get me started on her new side kick, I just wanted to throw her off a cliff. I just ended up fast forwarding every cut scene and was stuck in bushes spamming explosives in every battle. I never had the room to use the best weapon, the Jai-Lai sling. Every robot would cover the distance before my projectile returned to me. In the end, after hitting them with a freeze or fire arrow you just pull out your grenade sling-shot and spam away, followed by an immersion breaking search for blast paste.
i liked the first game but don't need a second one. its all the same again. Looking forward wo a new game the gurilla games
It left me impressed and exhausted at the same time was enough for a lifetime, I felt. Even after all these years I don't have the stamina for the sequel which will inevitably be longer and more complicated.
I just need 50 Deathwing fangs to upgrade my gear 😭
This game is fantastic in every aspect, and you’re saying just because it’s a year later that it begs to question whether you should buy it or not? Weird title for a video.
I am only in the very start it feels super linear so far. I know I need to stick to it longer. I hope it grabs me. I have a hard time picking up a game and sticking to it until the end.
Do I need to have played the first game beforehand?
Story kinda continues so yeh you should , don’t hav too tho , there’s a summary in forbidden west of the old game
Zero Dawn is a masterpiece. Forbidden West jumped the shark.
I was gonna hold off grabbing this until I have new gaming rig (ps4 >desktop). However it's probably gonna be a few years until I can save enough, and watching this review just reignited aaaaall the love I have for the first one. I spent hundreds of hours on it. Loved it so much. It's on sale on PS store right now. Might have to grab it…
Don't buy!!!............. if you have ps extra it will available on there 21st February........apparently 😁
the way i think if a gane is good is if it sticks with me. I still remember halo ce and i played that over 20 years ago as a kid. i had 0 recollection of zero dawn. and i did not care for this game idk how far i got cause i just stopped playing and never went back to it
Did they ever fix the thing were the main character SPOILS EVERY PUZZLE CONSTANTLY?
I want to play this game but that was so grievous I had to just stop.
Today's generation is too stupid for a puzzle that lasts longer than 7 seconds
This game will be available on ps plus extra tomorrow so no need to buy if you haven't yet.
Awesome review
Didn’t enjoy this as much as the first. Overwhelming amount of weapons/upgrades all needing grinding for. I finished the story on normal with mid game blue gear. Looks amazing though.
I bought it and I’m glad I did it.
This game is insane.
Couldnt manage to finish this one and i kinda hate myself for it. 😢 its just so un-interactive, really not interested in how good a game looks its really the last thing i care about. The sequel did atleast let me use a spear this time, i still think its stupid to fire arrows crafted from wooden sticks, string and metal shards is what we use to fight machines.
It’s an amazing game but I don’t have a ps4 or ps5 so I hope it comes to other consoles!
You don't have to buy it in 2023. You can buy it in 2024 :)
I just feel like this will be crazy overwhelming and gonna take a lot of time to beat
Not at all
I get that with a lot of games especially like elden ring or even the Witcher 3 but this game felt great didn’t feel overwhelming maybe for the first hour but after that it’s amazong
@@swaysmysavior yeah I just don’t have the time anymore lol I’m only 25 (26 in june) and I hate overly crowded games lol I appreciate linear story games so much more now

Found most of the new combat stuff over complicated and far to finicky too actually implement in battle. Far too many weapon and ammo types as well.
Is this game worth playing on base ps4? Is the performance acceptable? What about GOW Ragnarok
Both look incredibly gorgeous on base PS4, however they will be 30fps. They're very stable though. If you're already interested and think you'll like the games, then definitely go for it. They play really well on base PS4
good review!
Performance mode or resolution mode?
They better fucking do it right when they turn Horizons into a tv show! I dont want it to turn sour like the witcher.
Horizon in a nutshell: "the detail in this place is exceptional" 8:28 lol
Just my opinion.. but I derive absolutely no satisfaction fighting machines/droids/robots etc. The very same way I got turned off in gears of war when we went from fighting these hellish, creepy underground creatures to fighting... well.. Baird's microwaves that were given guns.. and in Halo where we went from fighting an entire collective of aliens with their own agenda, hatred for humans, personal ambitions, history and honor.. to fighting... teleporting robot things with no personality.. like the difference between fighting another warrior vs a swarm of bees or something. Idk. It just feels cliche and lazy
Never seen such hunting in any game in my life.
To anyone who says it’s not worth it, you need a brain check.
Wish they put some Sasquatch robots in there .
I was blown away bu HZD at the time. The environment, the story, the gameplay etc. forbidden West was kind of boring and i quit halfway through.
Yes, I took a lot of pics in first one too. Graphics are better? But boring
The story was ok it had its high points but it was a bit if a step down in my opinion.
I loved HZD, but this one, I dropped. All guys are simps, all women are constipated strong, Aloy is an insufferable chosen one who can't be helped to save the world, but risks her life to fetch any random ring (oh, and everybody is in love with her) , formulaic tribes (mother tree, great sky, ooga ooga spirits), and the grinding to upgrade a simple bow... the bone of a specific rat, the wing of a specific bird... looks like an mmo. The spandex suit cliche villains were particularly awful... no story, no engagement. Sad, really.
8:21 details horizon forbidden west movie footage about details
It was unfortunate to see elden ring take over right after forbidden west released, I myself stopped playing for elden ring but going back to it was totally worth the game time! Everything about this game is great! In my opinion it just got looked over
OH i love lee evans....ITS THE SHOOOEEEEESSSSSSSS
I was on the fence with this but after hearing melee still feels like a last resort i think im gonna pass. Would have really liked to play with melee as the main thing.
Too much dialogue and the weapons and fighting were more complex than necessary imo. Loved the first one, didn't finish this one.
Yeah same. This game is packed with just everything and thats the problem: you can craft, get skillpoints, get new moves, climb and glide, BUT pretty much everyone of these new mechanics isnt really thought through:
the crafting is just plainly useless. by the time you have the ressources you already have better armor/weapons
The Skillpoints are meh, I didnt really had a moment where i was like "i really need that skill!" you can easily go through the game without once opening the skilltree
the new moves (mainly close combat) are again pretty useless. Yes its an improvement but its also not hard to improve close combat of Zero Dawn.
the climbing he mentioned a little bit in the video: Yeah, you can climb pretty much everything with the exeption of storyrelevant places. there you still gotta wait for that one ladder or find that one hookable spot or whatnot. If you decide to go "everything climbable" then do it right like Zelda Breath of the Wild did. Either all or nothing, but dont pretend to do it just for the critics.
5:44 Nah man I like the brunette bushes 🧐👍
Ah yes, the Thunder Bastard!
Only thing Zero Dawn did better imo is the mystery of its story. Everything else is better in Forbidden West.
Somebody has never played the game franchise at all. This review is not helpful.
Just waiting on that pc release dag nabbit.
I'm waiting for pc release
