This BRAND NEW Fig Tree I Developed Is INSANELY Good!

  • In this video, I share a brand new fig variety I developed as part of my fig tree breeding project! Three years ago, I began a longterm project breeding figs to develop new high quality fig trees from seed. This new variety of fig tree is the second fig seedling of the lot to ripen its crop, and its fruit blew me away with how insanely good it is! You simply must see this to believe it!
This fig tree is a cross between UCR 271-1 Saleeb (father tree) and Del Sen Jaume Gran (mother tree). Del Sen Jaume Gran is one of my favorite figs, but it struggles in rain and is very late to ripen. The goal of this cross was to develop a new fig with the outstanding size and taste of Del Sen Jaume Gran, but as an earlier season fig with more rain resistance. This fig appears to be successful, because it has the same incredible flavor, but with a shorter "hang time" to ripening.
In this video, I share a full profile of the fig, a taste test and an update of my fig breeding experiment and the progress of the other fig tree seedlings.

Please help! My potted figs seem to have an infestation of a extremely small white insect. From what I've noticed the fig trees have stopped growing and I'm worried these insects are feasting on the roots. Any advice on what to do? Thanks!

So glad that you brought out that point in your video. You are a genius! I personally love figs and am trying to successfully grow them. Thank you for sharing your project/experiment. I live in Central Pennsylvania, bought a fig tree at a gardeners event many years ago. It was a cutting and she said her parents brought it from Italy so maybe some kind of Mediterranean fig. It was a green skinned fig and very prolific. I planted it in a giant tractor tire because I knew that it would have suckers and I think that helped to keep it warm. In the summer it had so many fig wasps that it was actually hard to get near the tree as the figs were ripening. I finally learned to ignore them and just pick figs that weren't currently occupied. The figs were like flowers and would actually open like blooms if left on the vine. I used to make jelly and can them because I would harvest buckets and buckets in some years. I never opened a fig or bit into a fig that had a wasp inside. Sadly, we sold the house last year fairly suddenly and I was unable to get cuttings to root. 😞 I do have pictures....

And yes, it’s super exciting as a fan of yours and figs, in general, to see the game evolving. Limitless possibilities. Upmost respect. And I’ll be buying a cutting!

When looking for a new variety, a very important caracteristic to select is that during ripening the fruit does not remain upright but hanging, with the ostiole directed towards the ground in order to prevent rainwater from entering the interior

Hell yeah. I am excited to follow this experiment and see how that variety (and all the rest - maybe there's a sleeper in there yet) turn out! You're living the dream. Eventually I'd love to try breeding for cold hardiness since I'm in 6a

Excellent video content! It will be interesting to see how this new fig performs over time. Also curious to see how last year’s experimental fig performs in the taste test this year. As always, Dale is a delight. 💕🐾

Congrats man, that's gotta be a great feeling, and so soon too. You didn't have to find out if it was all worth it when you turned 50, lol. People often forget how long it takes to get results in plant breeding. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for your work if you decide to release it to the public. I started collecting figs because of you, it's a fun hobby.

I live in Nova Scotia and love figs. We never have them in the stores and none of the nurseries carry the trees. Not sure I could grow them here so I live vicariously through you.

One day, probably. I will be waiting a few years, because the trees need a lengthy evaluation process to make sure they’re worthy of sharing.

You have added another fig convert to the list of your viewers. Now I have to go back and watch all the fig videos about 5 times each. A couple of trees will definitely be on my list next spring from a nursery somewhere.

Congratulations! Appreciate your dedication to the project. Very educational.
I'm in a coastal area of central Honshu Japan - maybe quite similar climate zone and just yesterday got my best harvest (8 figs!) from a tree I started from a branch tossed away from a neighbor's pruning - this 7 or 8 years ago.
Was able to get several branches to root in water, moved them to containers for a couple years and planted one in sandy soil and another in a harder, almost subsoil. Both survived but the one in sandy soil is much larger and started bearing fruit last year, the other has yet to bear anything.
No idea about the variety - fairly large and purple - not strawberry jam level, but we (and crows and other critters) like them.
Just by way of pointing out that it's possible to get good results from a simple approach, too.
