  • Microclimate, a word that’s used a lot in gardening. In this video I’ll explain the benefits of creating different microclimates in a garden and how it can help you grow some very special tropical style plants. We’ll look at how I’m creating microclimates in my own tropical garden and we’ll visit a subtropical garden that’s benefitting from microclimates that have been 250 years in the making!
A microclimate is defined as a small or restricted area that experiences different climatic conditions to the areas surrounding it.
In the Grow Paradise tropical style garden we utilise 3 different microclimates: warm, cool and dry. These particular microclimates help elongate the growing season, protect tender plants from colder winter weather and allow me to grow drought loving plants in the wetter seasons.
Abbotsbury Subtropical gardens microclimate keeps the 30 acre garden mostly frost free, enabling them to grow amazing specimens of exotic plants that would struggle to grow elsewhere in the country.

It’s like we’re always pushing for what we can’t have. In the Subtropics everyone try’s to push for the tropics. And in the summer we try to create microclimates to go keep things cooler because the heat kills so much.

Thank you for this! Your explanations are so clear and helpful. I live in a subtropical area that gets frost that always affects the banana plants and this video got me thinking.

I know your channel has a focus on (outdoor) gardening, but maybe it would be cool to do a video on indoor tropical plants as well and how to create a rainforest vibe inside the house? As i grew up, my dream has always been to create my own little rainforest inside my room haha.
