  • I have needed to be in Fresno a few times in the last couple of months for specific video projects, and I figured that as long as I've driven so far, I may as well get all the trains I can on video! I caught these trains at the end of a very productive day in the area. It was cold and wet, but well worth the time spent out in it. I hope you enjoy it!

    Call me crazy, but I like the sound of railroad diamonds :) The rhythmic clacking is pleasant to my ears. A nice Amtrak rolling through.

    When I was working for the SJVR, we will gather up our cars and head towards the east side for customers. We would roll up to the enter locker, request, a eastbound lineup, and more often than not. We were told that we were behind five and they will call us when they’re ready. More times than not that mid anywhere from 3 to 8 hour delay.

      UP ends up sitting at Calwa for extended periods of time for the same reason!

    Amtrak Locomotive and Cars look drastically different than most areas of the US. Other Countries are really spoiled with the great Passenger Service they Enjoy.

    Thank you for sharing this rail video as it brings back memories of my arriving in Fresno back in August 1968 aboard the San Francisco Chief at 5:45 A.M. which was in time after the long journey from Chicago, IL.

    Brings back some memories. I put a lot of shoeleather on that Calwa Yard ballast. Retirement is good though.

    There’s a old abandoned atsf caboose about a block from that diamond sir real neat

  • @daleroth236
    @daleroth236 Před rokem

    The diamond at 1:20 makes less noise as the rails are changed. Did you notice the difference? These are becoming quite common in heavily residential areas. As the train cars cross they are raised on their flanges.

    train is coming off of the yard lead onto main two crossing over to main one at CP Sunmaid. I used to work for BNSF out of Richmond.

      Second that. Two to one at Sunmaid. Spent 15 yrs w/ Amtrak out of Oakland, about 5 yrs of that to/from Bakersfield.

    Nice catch of that auto train! I believe that train is the CLORIC, or V-CLORIC. That goes from Clovis, NM, and goes to Richmond, CA, daily.

  • @richardsappington1658

    One of the spots I like to catch trains at! Here and at the Calwa diamond. When the SJVR is on the branch line, you can really get an up close and personal chase 😀😀

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  Před rokem +1

      Stay tuned for a couple of up close and personals with the SJVRR up there, and here in Bakersfield. Also, in my "Branch Lines" playlist are a couple more SJVRR chases down here.

    I think that's a flange-bearing diamond. It's quiet not particularly because it's at right-angles, but because the crossing line gets lifted partially over the BNSF tracks, so the BNSF track is almost continuous. You can see the ramps that lift the wheels of crossing trains when the last autorack clears at 8:41. At least, I think that's what they are. All subject to you being the railroad guy and me being a CZcams commenter.

    Great Video! Have you ever thought about filming the BNSF doing switching down by the del monte plant in Hanford? Also that auto rack at around 3:15 looked like it was leaning a few degrees off center to the right

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  Před rokem

      I didn't know they did as I'm not familiar with BNSF stuff, but you can bet it is now on my list! I want to get them switching the Lone Star branch near Shafter as well!

    Has anyone ever tried to make a "switchable diamond"? One that could change the rail alignment to eliminate the "clunk" as the wheels fall into the gaps.?

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  Před rokem

      Possibly. It's supposed to snow again tonight and tomorrow in Tehachapi. The last few times it's snowed, the road has been closed, and/or I have been too busy to get up there. The snow on the pass itself is usually gone within 24 hours unless it's unusually cold, which it hasn't been. I'll see what happens Thursday though.

    • @MarkClayMcGowan

      Not from the railroads themselves, but there are may places online to buy them. Lots of Facebook groups dedicated to such things. Just search for them!
