Will People REALLY Flee the City in a Disaster?

The term "Golden Horde" refers to the mass exodus of people from urban areas or densely populated regions during a major disaster, SHTF or societal collapse.
The theory among preppers is that urban dwellers, faced with the breakdown of essential services, scarcity of resources, and escalating danger in cities, may decide to flee en masse to rural or less populated areas in search of safety, food, and other necessities.
But could that really happen?
