  • Set up of the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2.
    Note: This was our first video, and sorry if Heather sounds sniffly, she has allergies and it's SF.
    This is the brand new version of the Copper Spur series.
    Edit: We used this tent for the Pacific Crest Trail in 2017.
    Start Date: April 27th
    Finish: September 6th
    Campers height: Stephen 6'3, Heather 5'9
    Weather outlasted: Desert, Snow (sierras), sleet, rain, hail, ashes
    Our Favorite Features:
    *Easy set-up and take down.
    In a group, we were always the first people to quickly take down everything.
    *Lightweight
    *Great for two people
    *For couples we had put our backpacks in the rainfly, next to our tent. We had no issues when we did this.
    *Durable and lasted the entire hike and it didn't break or tore.
    *Good size, plenty of space
    *You can set up the rainfly first, then then the tent to prevent the tent getting wet. The only thing you cannot prevent if the bottom is soaking wet, then it is inevitable for the bottom to not get wet.
    Cons:
    It is no rodent proof. :/ Therefore mice can chew through your tent if you leave food in it.
    Don't abuse the zippers. About 1000 miles in, one of the doors experienced issues with the bottom zipper and it wouldn't zip. Regardless in the end it still zipped. I guess we should have been more gentle.
    *Don't get deet on your tent, it doesn't wash out. haha.

    Do the 2 zipper doors irritate you? I am seeing a lot of companies are now doing the single zipper D door, which seems more user friendly vs the double of Big Agnes. I currently own the UL3, considering upgrading to the HV UL3. Just trying to gauge that damn door.

    • @TrailPirates
      @TrailPirates  Před 7 lety +1

      They do not irritate us. We thought it was convenient because there were times we had to reach to the top to grab something we had to try and not have the bottom flap open or vice versa. Also, the only problem at the end is the zippers sometimes were faulty and didn't zip, but we used it everyday for 125 days. I guess we could be more gentle with the zippers? :/

    did you ever own the copper spur UL2 before this one? I bought the UL2 from campsaver.com for 360 then saw the same one on REI for 319. I can return it i'm not leaving for the AT until August, do you think it would be worth the extra money to get the HV version instead?

      Sorry for the late reply we were on the trail. But for anyone else who is viewing this comment. We have never owned the original UL2. We opted for the new one because it was lighter and for the new features, which I forgot what it was. ha. I think one of them was the spider poles, which we loved! It was super easy and fast to put up our tent and to take it down.

      We just used this tent in the high sierras during a hail storm last week and it was great. The wind was mild, but it rained/hailed for 3 hours and we were completely dry in this. We also had the vent open. It was comfy. The only thing to note is that the head/foot ends of the rain fly do not come out *quite* as far as I would like to cover our tarp, but this may not be a problem if you have the footprint offered from Big Agnes.

    That is an awesome review man! I like seeing tents set up so I know how it will work for me. 11 stars on you!!!! People who are offended by the language probably should not go backpacking.... of course then they could bitch like bitches. That would make them happy, eh?

    Nice review cool tent. However I think companies like Big Agnes and MSR. Will suffer as Chinese clones like Naturehike and 3F UL. Offer, which are exact clones with the same spec materials for a 6th of the price..The Only tents they can not copy are the Hilleburgs as the materials are the best money can buy.. Example I just bought a North Face mountain 25 clone from Aliexpress, Mobi Garden Mue Xue. Its just as good if not better than the North face 133USD ..As opposed to 700USD. Both tents made in China. With a carbon fire pole upgrade its way better. And if the tent gets damaged its not the end of the world at 133 bucks.. By the way, Kudos for doing a review rat arsed ...Lol.

    Get rid of the toggles; substitute velcro. It's quicker and lighter. You won't be keeping the door open much anyway. That's my opinion.

    • @TrailPirates
      @TrailPirates  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for the suggestion but we are not people who tamper our equipment to make it lighter. It's a $500 tent and we liked how it functioned already. We took it all the PCT for 2250, and we liked the toggles, used it for several situations, and didn't mind carrying the tent as is. We would have never changed any other part of it until this day.
