Personally, The Batman is my favorite Batman movie, tells a really solid emotional story about Batman in a Gotham that is exactly what I tonally want from it, it's not just Chicago again but an almagation of different cities throughout the world that create a grimy, dirty city that's stalked by a grimy, dirty Batman played wonderfully by Pattinson who is no doubt my favorite actor to play a character that I've been familiar with since as early as I can remember. Didn't expect how much there would be of Catwoman and Falcone but was just as invested in their sub plot that adds to the seediness of Gotham. The depths of corruption in places not expected by Bruce is something I also really appreciated, directly criticizing his status as a high class figure in Gotham while along the way making him question how he should be perceived as Batman, a revelation that comes to him in a scene that's honestly one of favorite Batman scenes in any medium, where Bruce transforms from a angel of vengeance to a selfless hero, being that one light in the dark, that one person to reach out to a boy burdened by sadness, a boy that he thought died inside himself, but through rescuing the former Mayor's son, rescues the shreds of humanity that were in Bruce Wayne before Crime Alley. Truly loved this film.

It’s excellent- and after having watched it three times (saw the first time on the opening weekend, and twice after that on HBO Max), I can objectively say that this is now my favorite live action Batman movie… and yes, before everybody starts throwing it out there, that does include the Dark Knight (which is good, don’t get me wrong, but I think Batman Begins was better). Gotham City has been one of my biggest issues with more recent live action Batman movies; I think the Burton movies did an awesome job with Gotham City itself, Batman Begins did a great job as well, but then for some bizarre reason, the Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises ditched that for a generic big city, to which, Chicago is a good example.

I think Batman being around cops and knocking on Mobster doors is a deliberate choice, this is an early boots on the ground Batman, he’s not the mythic figure yet to the Mob or the Cops, by the end of the movie he starts becoming that. The Penguin is gonna be the man in charge now and he knows how big of a problem Batman is, Gordon is sure to be the new commissioner and he knows how good Batman is, thats how you start building up a legend. Plus Batman himself is still learning, im sure in the future we’ll see him act more like a ninja and less like this relentless bruiser.

I didn't get this AT ALL, he never thought they were the same. Why he was angry was because he was misunderstood, people took him for a symbol he never meant to be and for people he doesn't stand for. This was not a looking at mirror moment, the other thing that gets Batman on his heels was because he actually thought walking into that room that The Riddler knew who he was. This was the only clever twist that I actually liked in the movie, cause he didn't. He didn't know who Batman was. But if Batman thought he was going down the same path as Riddler was then the conversations he had with catwoman and others before this moment wouldn't have made any sense, he never thought that him and Riddler were the same. Beating the bricks off of the joker wannabes on the platform, the first time he walks into the club, when he was gonna start knocking cop heads, the car chase, when he walked into the club the last time just wasting no time getting down to business. Then, finally the way he dropped down through the glass into the garden, took the beating and kept on, dropped down even though he was all messed up to help those people and the imagery of him guiding them in the dark. Yeah idk why they wanted him to die so soon, I can see him dying in the last film, but it’s waaaay too early, there’s a distance between this Alfred and Bruce that I’d like to see be resolved before he’s kill off. And Alfred deserves to go out on his own terms or because it was an active choice that Bruce or Batman made, rather than just bad luck

Not that anyone will see this, but here’s my problem with Batman begins vs this movie. In begins almost every aspect of Batman is based on someone else’s idea. Bat mobile? Well that’s Wayne military contracts. Same for the bat suit. The concept of theatrics and being an indelible symbol? Well that was the league of shadows. Even the spikey gauntlets weren’t his idea. The best you can say is he thought of the ears. I’m being a bit harsh. But when you need to explain every aspect of the character you dilute it. When we know where Batman buys his underwear, it makes him lesser.

I really enjoyed this film. The critiques about the costume, choices, fighting and general actions by Batman can be explained by the first phrase in the movie. This Bruce Wayne has only been Batman for 2 years. He’s still learning, he’s angry, and he’s going to make mistakes. I’m much more interested in what an Ivy, doctor freeze looks like in this world but I’m really hoping they go for a more niche rogues gallery in scarecrow/ Hugo strange/ black mask. People will want the jokers and Harley’s but with this particular Gotham and Batman I’m really interested to see how they tackle the others.

Batsuit - easily a franchise best. It looks great, it's functional, you guys are 100% right with it. There's a video on CZcams of Robert Pattinson talking about the suit and saying something to the effect of, "He's not invulnerable, it's just a few plates of bulletproof armor and the rest is however much Bruce believes in it, and how superstitious the cowardly are."
I'm gonna go a step further and say that I love that this Batsuit is a cross between the Arkham Origins suit, the "Batman Inc" suit (as seen in Arkham City), the Gotham Knight "Field Test" suit (as it appears in Arkham Knight!), and the Batsuit from the "Smallville: S11" comic, issue #5 "Detective".

26:10 - I thought the "He Lies Still" scene was hilarious because there was a point when the other cop walks in, "The fuck are you doing?" and it was like dad caught the kids smoking weed in the basement playing cops and robbers with his old police or military uniforms. Like, if Ryan Styles and Colin Mochrie just trolled the entire police station by walking into an active crime scene and doing an improv skit to entertain the police standing around with their dicks in their hands.
And I don't think "He Lies Still" was the point of the riddle, that was just part B of the same riddle that ended with "Thumb Drive".
But I do know that "He Lies Still" is a Dad joke. The riddle wasn't, "What do you call a liar who is taking a nap?" or "What do you call a liar that just got knocked the fuck out by Deebo?" It could've been ANYTHING. But he was dead. Still. Inanimate.
And I think the specific riddle had a lot to do with that takeaway, because there's just something about the tension in the room that makes me think, "Yeah, you guys are fucking HIGH."

So I guess I'm going to be one of those people who writes a novel, and I'm sorry in advance. I loved the review, but there's a number of things in this review that I have trouble with, in regards to criticism towards this movie (which isn't perfect, by any means).
Someone else already said it, but I very much got the sense that Falcone already knew Selina was his daughter (he responds to her saying 'Dad' which is admittedly thin, but still, and when strangling her, he says he did the same to her mother which read to me as moreso than just cruel, but also familiar).
I also got the sense that Batman DID miss the final plot because he was too fixated on the board at Riddler's apartment that made it seem like he knew that Bruce = Batman. Once the call came in, he zoomed immediately to Arkham to see for sure, when the apartment had a wealth of evidence to pore over.
By the way -- the whole 'villain figures out Batman's true identity' thing is SO PLAYED OUT, imo. It's like a joke at this point. It's ridiculous. The fact that Riddler nailed so much of his plot and while still being a fundamentally flawed character without being the caricature that Riddler is often portrayed as in media, AND even he still missed that Bruce = Batman is worked for me, personally. He's not infallibly intelligent, and neither is Bruce-- they both overlook things along the way. And it led to that cool interrogation scene where Batman is too fixated on whether or not he's been found out to realize that the game is still afoot. Thumbs up from me.
I think the whole Thomas Wayne / Martha (Arkham?) and Hush subplots are more than red herrings, and a far sight better than what is present in The Amazing Spider-Man, because fundamentally, Thomas Wayne wasn't planning to turn his fucking kid INTO Batman. These aren't plot threads that relate directly to Bruce and some sort of mystery about why his parents were killed, as much as they serve to flesh out the world in general. TASM makes these mysteries central to the overall plot, whereas here they're used mostly as set dressing to make Gotham feel more lived in and emphasize that the corruption runs to the very core of the city. (I do agree that Telltale did this better, but I also think these threads are laid so they can be picked back up later.) Also, Batman doesn't have dumbass magic blood, which is definitely a massive improvement over TASM.
Riddler definitely thought Batman was in on the plan, which I think is an interesting inversion of the usual Riddler/Batman relationship where Riddler puts out (generally poor) riddles to try and foil Batman (out of compulsion). In this, he's putting out riddles to try and speak to Batman while under the scrutiny/watchful eye of the police, thinking him an intellectual equal, rather than a rival. It's our predisposed notion of the usual Riddler/Batman interplay, plus the fact that the movie is trading on the whole Se7en/Zodiac/investigative drama tropes that causes us to think that he's leaving clues to try and be stopped. That's how I took it anyway.
THAT SAID, I don't want to seem like I think this movie is infallible, so here are some of my complaints:
The OBVIOUS translation of 'rata alada,' apart from the stool pigeon angle, which did make sense to me, is a fucking BAT. In fact, that's a common insult for bats (rats with wings) AND for Batman. That, to me, made the whole idea that Riddler was trying to work WITH the Batman make way more sense. He wasn't speaking ABOUT Falcone, or Penguin or anyone else, he was talking TO the Bat. But it's never cemented in the film that that was the actual intended translation, and it also doesn't read as Reeves assuming the viewer is smart enough to put it together themselves. It feels like they missed something there.
Also yeah, the Joker reveal/makeup is... not great. I would've preferred that to be left out entirely, or doubled down upon like the Hannibal Lecter angle that Tim talked about within that deleted scene. Though I don't know where you'd fit that in this already admittedly overlong movie (much as I enjoyed myself for the whole runtime, it could've definitely been cut down.) Hopefully they can course correct if they do go down this path, because there is a part of me that has a soft spot for Joker and Riddler working together from back in the Gorshin/Romero days, but I'd much rather see some other lesser known villains get an at bat (haaa) first. Clayface, at least the original Basil Karlo incarnation, I think could work in this universe. The emphasis on Halloween at the outset also makes me think of Calendar Man, of course, who also feels like he would be at home here. Also, Zsasz! And Hugo Strange!
Ultimately, I don't think this movie hits the highs of the Nolan trilogy, but I will say this -- The Batman feels more like Reeves embedded himself in a realass Gotham, versus the Nolan trilogy feels like Batman through the (accomplished!) lens of Christopher Nolan. So the idea of a sequel to this Batman gives me a different kind of excitement because they did manage to find a unique tone, even if it's going to get compared to those terrific movies. Cheers, lads!

But there are so many issues with this movie, it doesn't do anything new, mind blowing or needed in a wide real estate of 3 hours. The detective stuff was cool but there was never a moment where it felt earned, never felt a pay off to any of it and the urgency of it all was watered down by the run time and everything else happening unfortunately. All the performances were fantastic, the score is incredible and it's shot beautifully. Alos, that Joker setup made me laugh audibly in the theater, it was cheesey, it was unneeded and felt like a different movie altogether. The other thing was he gets effed up after jumping off the building, he gets BLOWN up just inches from a bomb, Penguin gets in a rough wreck, Alfred gets blown up, people get the SHIT kicked out of them including Falcone from Catwoman - yet the only blood and messed up flesh we see is the dude that Batman Wails on after taking adrenaline. I liked the film didn't love it, the more I get away from it the less I rate it. It's at a 3 out of five right now.

Glad to see the Kansas hate continue. Was just watching through previous DCEU in reviews and was wondering if Greg's hate of Kansas has changed since he had his kid.
